That's more like it

This is the kind of thing I expect to see at the Olympics. It's a pleasant relief from the China bashing in the last couple of days with the US falsely accusing Chinese athletes of using performance enhancing drugs.

I wonder if the Korean athletes will be accused of being "enemies of the state" for being seen fraternizing with the "enemy." I'm not just talking about North Korea, this is the practice of the reactionary "new right" in the Yoon administration. For North Korean athletes to act in this manner suggests to me, their behavior was approved. It isn't the first time.

Is the South Korean administration accusing the IOC of breaching UN sanctions against North Korea? Does this government know how stupid and ignorant it sounds?

Samsung phones for N. Korean Olympians could breach UN sanctions: Seoul

The South Korean government on Thursday flagged that North Korea's receipt of Samsung-gifted smartphones, specially customized for all athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, could constitute a violation of UN sanctions.

The International Olympic Committee has provided all athletes at the Paris Olympics with specially designed Olympic Edition Galaxy Z Flip6 smartphones from Samsung Electronics, an official event sponsor.

The Unification Ministry in Seoul said the North Korean Olympic committee's collection of Samsung smartphones on behalf of its athletes "presents a possibility of violating sanctions on North Korea."

In a video of a recent lecture in South Korea
Moon Chung-in discussed concerns about Trump threats to withdraw the US military from South Korea. His view? South Korea can handle it. Moon also referred to Elbridge Colby as a "jerk." He described the Yoon administration and it's new right ministers at Defense and the Unification Ministry as slaves to US militarism. Moon was adviser to three South Korean presidents, including Kim Dae-jung (Nobel Prize), No Mu-hyun and Moon Jae-in. He noted that currently there is no communication whatsoever with North Korea, which is very dangerous in a situation where the 9.19.2018 Military Agreement has been abandoned by both sides. Consequently, there is a much more substantial danger of accidental confrontation with no mechanism in place to contain escalation. Professor Emeritus Moon went on at length concerning the Yoon administration's reactionary militarism falling into the US cold war mindset with absolutely no real policy designed to end the war with North Korea. The radical anti North Korean posture in Yoon's cabinet designates people of Moon's orientation, as one of the architects of the Sunshine Policy, as "state enemies." Ruling out contact with the north, is the greater threat to Korean security, he said. Here's my source-

Below is a discussion of the absurd and embarrassing US media campaign against Chinese athletes. The most interesting and hypocritical aspect of the US approach on this has to do with its liberal use of TUE's (therapeutic use exemptions) for its own athletes.

I don't know about that, Admiral Harris as US Ambassador to South Korea during the Moon administration was pretty awful. Trump appointing the former PACCOM commander as an ambassador was a dumb move. According to Wikipedia, it was Pompeo's idea.

I'm still looking at the Teresa Teng song 'Wish you long life,' 但願人長久 and found a translation done by a Chinese American scholar, Qiu Xiaolong, who is also a successful mystery writer here in the US. His translation appears at this Wikipedia entry on the classic poem which is the basis for Teng's performance-

Shuidiao Getou

Teng's performance doesn't include the first stanza translated by Qiu. I interpret the ancient poem a little differently but what do I know? I think that's how poetry like this lasts a thousand years, everyone sees it through the light of their own experience. As I understand it, the poem was intended to be sung. Su Shi is the original poet, 11th Century or so.

@QMS

Thanks QMS. I almost never read or post something from the Korea Herald. Tim S. found the Herald X post and retweeted it. Generally too conservative, the traditional English language news in Seoul. But I have to admit I was moved by their two photos. Maybe there's hope for peace.

I'd heard rumors that there might be some cracks in the dominant conservative media phalanx who are not overly pleased with the Yoon admin performance, insofar as the repeated misuse of power, corruption stories, and just plain ineptitude, are jeopardizing conservative prospects in future elections. Yoon's approach to national security is unnecessarily radical and provocative. The conservative media in South Korea can break an administration if it chooses to do so. The Park impeachment was evidence of that.
