Friday Night Photos Holiday Hash Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 07/05/2024 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
Normally I only go to the San Diego Botanical Garden once a year at most and since I was there in May I didn't expect to be there again until next year at the earliest. But last Friday I got an email from them announcing one of their Corpse plants would be in bloom Fri, Sat, and Sun. So on Saturday I stopped by to check it out. Contrary to its name, it didn't smell like a corpse but more like a dirty garbage can and the scent wasn't very strong.
I hope everybody had an enjoyable 4th yesterday.

why in dawgs green earth
would some creative force produce a stinky flower?
Here, it's beautiful but, stinks like hell on burnt toast.
Oh well, took a boat from Westport, MA to Newport, RI
today. Almost slaughtered the passengers with the speed and chop
but no one busted a spleen in the process. wasn't my idea of a good
time, but it did shut up the gabbers.
Hi, QMS.
The stinky flower didn't stink all that much. You could barely smell it. As for why the stinky smell, I'm guessing to attract pollinators like flies and ants that are attracted to dead rotting things.
How long was the boat ride from Westport to Newport?
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
Yeah, the trip to NPT was about 2 1/2 hours
owing to the direction of the chop and taking her easy.
after the "guests" got tanked ashore, I cranked her up and it
took under an hour to get back to WPT. Felt bad about straining
the engines and whatever structural damage was done to the hull.
But the owners son had some 'important' thing to accomplish so
go we did, like a bat out of hell. Crazy.
Decided to sell my yacht ..

Thanks for the photo essay!
If you have a non-facebook link
I'll check out your yacth, but I don't do facebook for anything.

You don't have to if you click on the link Q provided
neither do I attempt faceplants

this was done by a friend of mine that is savvy in that realm
so far, it has worked to move some of my unwanted items ..
sorry for the infraction
A fine looking yacth
Thanks, Q.

Your yacht is simply beautiful Q
It represents to me a perfect picture of RI, NE. It looks classic to my eye.
yes, it is a classic
-
-
example of a miniaturized catboat which is popular in NE waters
sails well, but not intended for offshore work
more of a lake boat
getting too stiff in my old age
to do the gymnastics of boarding
and tacking
love that little craft
Is it hard for you to sell it?
How will you cruise around the calmer waters of the coast and lakes of NE?
yeah, it is breaking my heart
-
-
the reality is this old body has gotten too stiff and sore to climb around the cockpit
will be left with many fond memories of past excursions (which don't hurt)
thanks for asking J
Hi Q
I feel for you. It's been a trusty companion and source of serenity.
Hola, SP, thanks for the pics. i love the juxtaposition of
the Corpse Flower and the Robber Fly.
Wen't to the Alameda County Fair today for my wife's volunteer commitment, 100 degrees +. On the way out from where she was we cut through the "small animal exhibit" to find this sign:
I also have some flower shots from the yard this week:

Hi, EL
It was a little cooler down here today. 92 on my patio.
Beautiful flowers you got going in the yard. I got a laugh at the sign from the fair. Our county fair ends this Sunday.

Hi el
Wonderful photos, thanks. How different your Milkweed is from the only two varieties I know. How perfectly star shaped the flowers are. It's really nice to see them so closely and sharply. Do you have success with in attracting monarchs?
Can you please explain the poultry sign to me?
a parakeet is not poultry
Parakeets are not poultry. Poultry is gamebirds, turkey, chicken, pheasant, quail, etc. So AI did that, not a thinking human that knows poultry from a parakeet, which are absolutely not poultry.

So why did they print and hang that banner?
Was it for fun? I might be looking at too literally ; ).
We have several species of milkweed including some that
are more the norm. That one and a couple of others came from a local nursery, I have no idea what the name is. We get a lot of monarchs in the yard, as well aas a handful of other species of butterfly.
The poultry sign is a mystery. Alameda county has agriculture, including poultry in its history, so folks know better. At the fair, one small hall is devoted to thinks largely kept as pets, snakes, lizards, exotic spiders, rabbits, pigeons, guinea pigs, parakeets and exen a few really exotic fowl. Most area had no signage or proper signage, and then there was that. I can'y explain why they hung it, but I had to have the picture because of the absurdity of it.

Thank you el
for faithfully showing life's absurdity.
a poultry you say?
Great pics, love yer Milkweed, what type is it if you know?
Wow, so I didn't even know I had a poultry once. Another fail for AI.
Thanks for the pics!

Don't know the species, one of a few unusual ones we got at a
nursery up in Richmond.
As to the poultry, I can't tell if they're raised for the eggs, at maybe a dozen per omelet, pr the meat. Wings anybody?

Hi Social
Thanks for the photos. The obvious one was a special treat. Uncle Fester is a perfect name for the corpse plant, although these days Uncle Fester looks less scary than the plant to me ; ). Did you happen to get a shot of it with a child looking? I wonder what the expression of a child would be when they look at the plant. It’s so showy in its tropical environment. It seems like there are a lot of opportunities in the SD area to take advantage of. My photographic exploration started seriously on a brief trip to SD in the 70’s. That moment came when walking over the rocky coastline at Point Lobos.
Here's an image of a favourite photographer at Point Lobos. Check out his other images in the link below.

What an interesting musical selection. At first I wasn't sure I would enjoy it, but as it developed I found it really grabbed me.
Hi, Janis
I didn't get any shot of kids looking at the plant. I was more focused on the plant than on the other people looking at the plant.
Thanks for the link. For someone who didn't take up photography until he was 42, Wynn Bullock was a very accomplished photographer.

Evening all
Can one of our resident ornithologists please identify this bird for me?
Or this moth?
Cheers everyone
I'm no bird expert
but I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess your bird is a member of the paradise family. Your moth has me stumped. Nice touch with the vignetting around the leaves.

; ) Social
Going out on a limb is what birds do! The paradise family is of course correct ; ).
I sometimes enjoy vignetting the square, since I often see a circle in the square.
Hey J!
Neat pics. I think SP has the ID right on yer bird. We had them in yard as a kid, and I never saw the bird in them... I can't make out the moth. My eyes are going.
take care

Sorry d
That's no excuse!
Beautiful pictures Janis. There were a lot of those birds down
in San Diego when I was a kid, they mostly hung out in small flocks. We have a neighbor who absolutely hates them. Another neighbor, adjacent to him kept a small flock and he nagged and hassled them until they removed them.

My pet Sehlat...
Hi Hindsight
It's always a special treasure to sight you here. How are your efforts going, and how is Kauai faring?
I think Sehlat is saying, "did you have to wake me dad?"
Just seeing the cane chair and wooden house brings back fond memories, thank you.
Hi, Hindsight
Cute kitty. I love the way cats will sleep in the craziest positions.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP,
Great pics as always SP. Wonderful work man. The purple flower above the Hooded Oriole is a Salvia sps. one of the sages I think. Similar to Mealy or Mexican, but not sure it is either of those. There are a bunch of purple ones. That west coast Hooded Oriole sure is yellow on the head. Our subspecies is orange all over without any yellowish. Another type gets almost fire orange red. Great pic of it. If I get some time I will pull out my Dragonflies and Damselflies of California and see if I can guess on the damselfly. It is either a Bluet (Enallagma sps.) or a Dancer (Argia sps.) type. Don't have time to look now. I guess some of the Corpse Flowers really stink bad, others not so much, and the worst is likely tied to a peak pollentaion or bloom period. Neat flower to see!
take care all,
happy trails!

Hi d
Thank you for identifying the salvia, I was wondering. I would love to see your damsel and dragon flies.
So, the scent has to do with when the flower is most ripe for pollination, makes sense.
Hi, dystopian
Thanks for the ID on the Salvia. The pure black on the Orioles chin really help set off the yellow on it's head. Looking foreword to seeing some of your damsels and dragons.

Don't those Corpse plants take forever
to bloom? They look like something from The World Beyond, just like Aloe blooms. Great visuals you all. The latest from the Dumbo Sandbar Peninsula is our 'esteemed' (cough, cough) dimwits in Tallahassee have decreed no climate change discussion in school textbooks. Right on (gag). Glad I went to school in an age of Intelligence. Right now, sensible Floridians have activated our storm watching blogs. Beryl is just the first salvo. Anywho, hope you all had a ☮️ Holiday. Rec'd!!

Hi, orlbucfan
The Corpse Plant reminds me of something from prehistoric times. Here's a link with some info about the plant. https://www.treehugger.com/corpse-flower-amorphophallus-titanum-5095935
I'm surprised they still let you even speak the words climate change out loud. I should probably just shut up before I give them any ideas.

Thanks for the corpse plant
