An April Snow

We don't have a Daily Bucket or Dawn Chorus here (the only reason I visit TOP), so I'll just make a short post on this snowy April morning in Upstate NY.

I've seen the Cardinals around the yard, but they haven't visited the feeder for a few weeks. I should probably spend more than $5 on a 20lb bag of seed...

The Dark-eyed Juncos have been absent for weeks. They showed up again as suddenly as the snow.

Afternoon Update:
Had a few new visitors, and more Juncos...we even had a bit of sun between snow showers.

Yesterday, Virginia, Route 95 through Occoquan area, about 2 pm, an adult Bald eagle went sailing right across the highway west to east, white head and tail highly visible.
Didn't forget to keep steering the car, but it was a challenge for a second.

Thanks for doing this!

Good morning, all! Beautiful morning here in central New Mexico. We'll be in the mid60's. The sun is charging up my solar panels and all is well.

Have a lovely day!

We just got back to NC and I have yet to put my feeders out. I use a premium seed from WalMart (I know, but it is really good seed). It is a mix of mainly black oil sunflower seed, a little of other seeds, dried fruit and shelled peanuts. I buy this seed because it has the peanuts (generous amount) in it and many birds (titmice, nut hatches, and wood peckers) love the peanuts. I have yet to find a mix like this anywhere else in my small town. I store my seed in resealable containers, so I do not have a bag right now. I think it is made by company called BBB or something similar. It comes in a green bag and costs about $14 or $15 for a large bag. The birds definitely like it because there is no waste other than the seed shells.

I hope to see more photos and stories like this here at C99P.

I count myself lucky in that our property has both Red-headed and Red-bellied woodpeckers nesting this year. It's a treat for me to see Red-headed because they were not to be seen in the part of the southern mtns where we lived.

to my hanging bird feeder is a red bellied woodpecker. For as big as they are, it has no trouble landing with grace. Downies come too and we have pileated woodpeckers around here. I usually hear them long before I see them.

I, too, usually hear a Pileated before I see it. Downys are regular vistors to the feeder. Yellow-shafted flickers are common in migration and a pair often stay in the area.
I was lucky enough to see an Acorn woodpecker at Big Bend NP one winter vacation.

... & we, too, shall have snow.

View off the deck in Ohio this morning. We had some fierce winds & snow overnight. Huge crack & crash last night about 10:00pm. Stepped out briefly to see what I could see ... which was basically darkness & blowing snow. So waited until this AM to investigate.

The fallen tree had recently died. I thought about cutting it down for firewood this past summer, but it was quite vertical so I didn't trust myself to know which way it would tend to fall, & had zero desire to fell a tree onto my own house. Problem solved!

A few daze ago, to was 69, yesterday it snowed. It is hitting 63 today, a high of 38 tomorrow. My puppy doesn't mind so long as I bring a frisbee and tennis ball out with her. But yo yo weather patterns really confuse one's body, especially when the titanium in your body hates change.

I got a Ti helper in my arm in November. No airport scans yet, no card, I can show them the scar.

Love the gorgeous bird photos and they are a welcome relief from the seriousness. We have a lovely flicker who has become a regular visitor to our suet feeders and he always makes me smile. Maybe one day I'll react fast enough to capture him on film!

and spring has sprung here in Missouri. Birds have been singing, courting and apartment hunting all over the place the past two weeks or so. Summer residents are showing up in ever increasing numbers. Great time of the year.

But the Arctic Vortex has other ideas. The next week is going to be hard on the insectivorous birds that have already arrived. A friend on Facebook said he saw a Phoebe eating suet.

Yet MORE snow in Upstate NY. My blooming daffodils have disappeared and are probably face-down. Typical April here.
