Mike Gravel at the 2008 debate

Partial transcript:

Gravel appeared with the seven other contenders for the Democratic nomination for president. He stated that the Iraq War had the effect of creating more terrorists and that the "war was lost the day that George Bush invaded Iraq on a fraudulent basis." He maintained that an end to the war could be effected by a bill passed in the House and a Senate filibuster on such a bill defeated by a daily vote on cloture, but that the will to do so was lacking. Further, he suggested a bill requiring the president to withdraw from Iraq on pain of criminal penalties. He said the recent threat of a pre-emptive nuclear strike in the "war on terror" was immoral and would be dropped under a Gravel administration, and that America has no important military enemies and it is the influence of the military-industrial complex that has conditioned Americans to think of the world in terms of enemies. He characterized the CIA overthrow of democracy in Iran in the 1950s lies as the root of U.S. problems with that country. Overall, he said that all American armed forces who died in Vietnam died in vain and American armed forces in Iraq were dying in vain. Regarding his fellow candidates, he said, "I got to tell you, after standing up with them, some of these people frighten me — they frighten me."[22]

Lots of good ideas he thought of.

It was not a laughing matter! They laughed anyway. Millions were dead by 2008 and when called out for their blood thirst they laughed.

Since 2001 30,000 veterans have killed themselves which is a hell of lot of lives lost to our evil hegemony.

Timely and on the day that Gravel passed. Sending the libs a message, Joe? You won’t like mine.

Mike Gravel was "One Of The Good Guys". Damn too few and far between; and now he's gone.......

With the short shrift progressive (or simply humane!) ideas like his are getting these days, I wouldn't be surprised if he just decided that he was "gonna leave this brokedown palace" for better places hereafter.......

Fare thee well, fare thee well
I love you more than words can tell....

Politicians of his ilk aren't around any more. Where are the anti-war voices in DC today?

Reading the pentagon papers into the congressional record was also an important aspect of his legacy IMO.

@Lookout Newspapers closing all over the country,

In NYC the WSJ closed its NYC political department and fired the reporters who had that beat.

The Daily News closed its newsroom months ago and the new editor fired/bought out its best known most seasoned reprters. All gossip and human interest misery porn these days.

The NY Times gave up on any actual NYC reporting long ago. What is offered now is RW opinions by Never Trumpers and RW Democrats.

The noose is tightening at an accelerating rate.

So many big newspapers have been bought up by effing hedge funds and over 60,000 journalists have lost their jobs and many have gone solo and writing more freely. But it’s another gig economy job where people pick up the things their employers once paid for.

Repeat after me….

It was probably one of the most important things done that got the Vietnam war to end. If only Assange has someone in his corner fighting for him.

Tomorrow some British politicians are protesting against them not being allowed to see him. Fingers crossed.

THIS IS THE LAST THING I NEEDED TODAY. GODSDAMMIT.

He was my first-ever primary vote (2008) - had to pencil him in and had no real hope of him winning, but I did it with pride. I was being a citizen, doing the best a citizen can do.

If I knew then what I knew now...well, I'd have a hell of a lot more on my to-do list than voting, now wouldn't I???
