What is #ForceTheVote?
From ForceTheVote.Org:
We demand that every progressive in Congress refuse to vote for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House until she publicly pledges to bring Medicare for all to the floor of the House for a vote in January. Force the Vote!
Rep. Nancy Pelosi is running for her fourth term as Speaker of the House. The election is in the first week of January and this time, because Democrats lost seats in the House and were left with a slim majority, she needs votes from congressional progressives to get re-elected.
Before the Nov. 3rd election, the Democrats had 230 members in the house. Afterward, only 219. It takes 218 votes for someone to become Speaker of the House.
Krystal Ball discusses with Brie Joy Gray the push back talking points.
Since the Democrats have a razor thin majority, in which they will need every progressive member to vote accordingly, there is a a window of opportunity for “progressives” in the house to make demands, on whom ever will be speaker of the house.
The “key” to understanding this whole thing is really quite simple. In order for a Republican to take over as Speaker of the House, it would require Democrats voting for a Republican to elect them Speaker of the House.
If Nancy runs for Speaker of the House and loses, the position will not automatically go to a Republican. The house would continue to vote for party candidates, until someone achieved at least 218 votes.
Personally, I would not be outright opposed to a Republican as Speaker of the house, if they would agree to bring “progressive” legislation to the floor, on a regular basis. Not just for a single issue like Healthcare For All, but, on a regular basis, bring up progressive legislation.
“Progressives” do make up a sizable portion of the population and we deserve to have representation in our congress, that actually introduces legislation that represents our share of the population, and our “interests” in this so called “Representative Republic” we find ourselves living in.
I mean to me, this is hugely fundamental. Are we “progressives” not entitled to actual representation of, by and from, the people we elected to, you know, represent us in congress?
Good heavens, “progressive” policies, those like Bernie Sanders has advocated for during his two runs for president, have broad public support, but it rarely, if ever, actually gets to the house floor for a vote.
In other words, progressive legislation does not get fair representation, and that alone should bother any American, if they have any semblance of “fair play”. I mean, my goodness we live on a steady diet of Radical right wing and Neoliberal legislation.
Is it really too much to ask that some progressive legislation, that has overwhelmingly, broad public support allowed to be debate in our so called representative republic?
Is it too much to ask that legislation that represents the views, wishes and the will, of we the people, a large part of our population, has actual representation?
#ForceTheVote, is simply, we the people demand our representatives, who we knocked on doors, phone bank, donated what little money we have, put in countless hours of time, effort and energy, to help get them elected, actually represent us.
And this moment in time, with Democrats having just a razor thin majority in the House of Representatives, creates a rare opportunity because the Democrats will need every single “progressive” house member's vote, in order to win the Speaker of the House position.

You can't believe this would happen
A Republican Speaker would never do that, let alone "on a regular basis". He (I say that because I'd expect it to be a man) would not allow progressive legislation to be brought up. He *would* allow crazy rightwing stuff.
Then we could weep about how we got double crossed when it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Also, I hate Pelosi...just for the record.

I would expect few of the “Invitees” will show.
It is, after all, sort of an ambush.
“Go along to get along.” Is the default in politics, on local, State and National levels. Unless our progressives are willing to risk the wrath of Mama Bear and banishment from the Democratic Party, little is likely to come from this particular effort in terms of action.
This is not to say confronting the system is not long overdue and absolutely necessary. There are still many who vote Democrat who are loathe to admit that their party is both anti-change and anti-99%. The most important part of tonight’s Town Hall may be to point out that unsavory reality, with exclamation points!!!!!

Lest post above be misconstrued
I am an active supporter of the new People’s Party and would hope that their ranks continue to grow with those who have already Dem-exited and those who may soon recognize the futility of redirecting the disastrous trajectory of the a Democratic Party away from the embrace of the neo-cons.
Any meaningful changes will have to find more fertile ground than that held by today’s Democratic Party in order to build a viable future for us all.

“Go along to get along.” ?
I would say that is an insult to most working people on the low income scale. You can't even get along by going along. People can't make enough to pay for rent, car and food. It's BS.
Don't go along, because you'll never get along doing so.
Sigh.

No, that’s what politicians do
to each other. I was not referring to the people left to fend for themselves, without help.

I'll have to check it out
But I'm a little shocked by a 4 hour after party. I want to watch some of that so I can see what protocols they had. Masks? Distance? 4 hours!!?
blocked from the party but it's virtual, right?
the town hall is zoomed.
[EDIT] I'd vote for Cornel West
I watched the force the vote video.
Most of it was very good, but I'm going to say this.... Jimmy Dore is a problem. He practically threatened politicians who don't agree with him. He just goes too far.
And Cornell West likens EVERYTHING to biblical stories, which drives me nuts because I don't think main character in those stories is himself moral (would love to have a come to the real Jesus conversation with him). He beats a monotonous horse with the religious stuff.
All AOC needs to do at this point is point to Dore as a reason to not listen to the whole group. She's copping out on her own promises and needs to have her feet held to the fire, but Dore is giving her a reason to turn her back.
Brianna and Katie and Kyle and Justin are great. Wish I hadn't hung in there and seen Dore.

For reasons. Giving voice to what the masses
are feeling is a way of sharing the suffering.
Perhaps the point was along the lines of the
sentiment?

He was more threatening than that.
