Rachel was smirking tonight
She pulled a fast one on Bernie - don't know if anyone caught it. I doubt the vids are up yet, and I have no skill at splicing to put together the relevant pieces...
She did one-on-one interviews with first (sort of) Hillary and then Bernie.
(I am about to describe things which were played back out of sequence with how they took place before the show was on air and it is cumbersome to put into words...)
Well, actually, she very first ran a discussion which she taped with Hillary AFTER having earlier taped with Hillary in person and then with Bernie by remote video, and after Trump made his comments to Chris Matthews about summarily executing women who have abortions or whatever it was he was mouthing off about before he then sort of walked some of it back a bit, maybe.
So, Trump had not yet made that remark when Rachel first spoke with Hillary, so they had not originally discussed it. The Trump quote then happened ahead of her speaking to Bernie, and she was able to discuss it with him. So she ostensibly wanted to run what Bernie had said by Hillary and had to track her down later in the day to ask that.
You got the order of all of this or am I just spewing gibberish at this point?
Ok, so that's how it was recorded, but the way it played on air BEGAN with this question to Hillary about something Bernie had said which we do not see until the following hour.
To paraphrase, Rachel essentially said to Hillary that Bernie's comment about Trump's statement was that that was just Trump being Trump and the media yadda, yadda, yadda and Trump's statement was not really very important at all.
Which gave Hillary the opportunity to grandstand about how abortion rights (up until whenever it is she actually thinks it SHOULD be made illegal, of course, but that does not get mentioned) are so very important and she's the one and only champion of this and this is why NARAL and Planned Parenthood have supported her.
So, it occurs to me that this may be too clever by half. And yes, when I wait the hour to hear what Bernie has to say, really, he said nothing of the kind unless one more or less creates one of the ransom notes where you cut out one letter here and there to reassemble new words, essentially.
When Rachel brought up the subject of Trump's statement about abortion, Bernie was CRYSTAL CLEAR about how absolutely he supports women's rights and the right to chose. It was as perfect a response by him as any I have ever heard on the topic.
Then the convo began drifting into speaking about Trump in general and Bernie began commenting about how the media focuses on Trump too much and that's when he made a comment about how what's going on with the economy is more important than Trump's nonsense. The conversation had moved on from the abortion topic. Frankly, Rachel conflated the end portion as the whole of Bernie's comment INSTEAD OF WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID ABOUT THE SUBJECT when she pitched to Hillary Bernie's supposed comment. It was an absolute distortion/misrepresentation of what Bernie said, utterly out of context. It was beneath Rachel, imho.
BTW, I hadn't timed it, but I believe Rachel spent far more time in her interview with Hillary on air because the second half of Bernie's hour was a discussion about the two one-on-ones with Rachel, Steve Karnacki and a third person, - I think it was Todd. So Steve Karnacki then served back up to Rachel her take on the distortion Rachel had presented to Hillary as if it was truth and they had ANOTHER go-round on how inappropriate Bernie's supposed remarks were on the topic. ACK!
Rachel was smirking when they revisited what she'd pulled off.
The whole thing was absolutely gross and intended to influence votes. I am disgusted.
YUCK!

Rachel has a contract, and she has to sell out to keep working
Isn't that crystal clear by now?
I haven't watched but a half hour or so of MSNBC, total, since Olbermann got banished and Phil Griffin and his Fake Liberal Cable Network Crew took it over and sucked the soul out of it. Fuck them all, and especially Rachel. The sellout is now complete.
Right on, Lunachickie, right on
Must Show News Benefits Clinton...not just her, that whole skeleton crew. There is a special place in hell for a pundit that panders to a politician. Al Jazeera is reporting that the FBI is scheduling an interview with Clinton. Wonder if Rach was smirking because she knows how that will turn out?

Exactly, luna.

I am now wondering if
the MSM is trying to build a firewall between Clinton and the FBI: elevate her to a status that is truly above the law.

Rachel has fallen so far from when she first start
I don't recognize her anymore.
She was wonderful when she was on Air America and when she was on Keith's show.
But I noticed after she started her own show she focused too much on the stupid things that the GOP did. And when the democrats did stupid things she never talked about it.
I stopped watch her when she refused to talk about Obama using drones in countries that the US wasn't at war with.
When Bush was responsible for the killings of innocent civilians, she was all over it. Obama? Crickets.
There's a diary at TOP bitching about how Bernie didn't answer her question.
And how wonderful her 'highness' did.
I have no doubt that she was smirking.
Shame on you, Rachel for selling out.
( I'd like to know what Keith thinks of her)

And her melodrama...
from her appearance to her posture, to her posturing, she is more than I can bear. I turned off cable news shortly after Keith left and haven't watched it since.

It's been astonishing
watching the extreme effort media has put into marginalizing Bernie. If they put as much effort into, well, journalism, we might be living in something closer to an actual democracy.
Regardless of how the election turns out, many will be haunted the rest of their lives by their efforts to stifle those who support the ideals espoused by Sen. Sanders. Kos, Krugman, Maddow -- to name a few -- are in positions where they could help build a better America. Instead, they chose to be lap dogs to the elite, and they've lost all credibility.
If I were still at TOP, I would end with this caveat: You don't have to support Bernie to be a good American. But you do have to support democracy.
"The real power is in the hands of small groups of people and I don't think they have titles. -- Bob Dylan"
I just keep reminding myself
that if this weren't true
Then I'd really have to reconsider whether my suspicions about how corrupt the US is were tinfoil hat territory. Happily, this election has validated that corruption and brought it right out in the open for all to see.
A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.

Appalling manipulation
Have watched Rachel for years. Kid listened to podcasts. She has had a following, but not now. She no longer appears to have any principles, and this was absolutely IT for me. The whole edit on this is more Kabuki theatre.
Recall that the King of the GOS banned all "CT", and the meaning and patterns of what has been happening always dismissed as "CT", when in fact, a certain amount of CT seems highly warranted.
I gave up on MSNBC years before...
...I gave up on the GOS. Go cold turkey. It really is the best way.
Amen! to Cold Turkey on MSNBC and TOS
I left MSNBC for good about 6 weeks ago and decamped from TOS on 3/14. They are absolutely Taboo for me and I am never going back.

I have never been a Maddow fan. Something has
always been off with her, as far as my radar is concerned.
The last responsible old school journalist IMHO is Bill Moyers.
Thom Hartman and Cenk are 2 of the best that never get direct play on the MSM.
Will Pitt from Truthout is another good one.
And so far The Nation magazine is a lone voice of semi-reason.
The rest of the MSM are carpetbaggers and fishwrap IMHO.
I miss Jon.

He's not a well known commodity but...is doing some pretty insightful stuff. Hard hitting nail-on-the-head stories that have the credibility of former a Clinton insider.
He's been doing it for years now here it Connecticut.
Which Jon do you miss?
Back in the early two-thousandsies, and she used to say, when Air America was new, Rachel really was a breath of fresh air. She looked deeply at things.
Tad Devine crossed her this week, in her estimation. Ahead of Super Tuesday, she did a bit on how much longer Bernie had had offices open in a number of the March 1 states. I particularly noticed it because I'm in one and I was pretty sure our peeps showed up months ahead of any Clinton organization. Then this week Tad said that Bernie had not tried in the states ahead of now. She's referenced her earlier piece several times, including having brought that up with Bernie last night (as if he's responsible for every word which drips out of Tad's mouth) and came after him more than a couple times on this. It was almost as if Rachel felt personally violated, herself, for having had Tad contradict her. Dunno.

The media are politicans
In another venue where they pretend to be "fair and balanced" reporters, yet they are corporate shills, highly paid, to filter and focus their audience to whatever they deem appropriate. There is much more happening in the world then what our 'news" tells us. They ARE the status quo, inertia and confusion are their friends.
Truth and honesty are ours.
They just say the words - I don't think they even pretend to be
Fair and Balanced at all. They just mouth the slogan...

"There is much more happening in the world then what our 'news'"
You certainly have that right. Remember the 35 (at the time) people killed in Begium in the airport & train attacks? How many people know that, on the same day, an estimated 50 people were killed by a drone strike in Yemen? Well, at least it wasn't a wedding party (allegedly).
Amy Goodman is a national treasure.
Rachel lost me after Olbermann left
Without Olbermann, most of the cast at MSNBC all settled into respouting what FOX and Limbaugh had to say that day. Rachel did so as well on some days, but on others she was pushing same-sex marriage before SCOTUS ruled in favor of that. Once that issue was settled, she had nothing to offer anymore, and the women in my house began pushing to watch ANYTHING but her. Without Olbermann, I had no reason to object, since the last thing I want to hear after working with a bunch of Limbaugh Dittoheads is so-called liberals talking about the exact same issues with little shift in frame.
I have become very disappointed in Rachel, in that all the good she could be doing for the American Body Politic is squandered on relatively less important issue coverage that doesn't affect most of us. I feel the same about Oprah, who caved in to avoiding being taken to court by the right wing over trivia. All the influence she could have wielded with Obama, and she let him act like a Republican POTUS with barely a word.
Our side needs a media champion, and two of our best options who already have large audiences leave us on our own while they pursue -what? - money? ratings? A Contract renewal? They certainly aren't pursuing the Greater Good!

Rachel devoted an hour to Hillary
Rachel devoted an hour to Hillary and gave Bernie a half hour. She spoke with Hillary face to face TWICE and had Bernie on a remote video link. She shook hands with Hillary.
"We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
And tripped all over herself setting up why she spoke to Clinton
a second time... Even went to far as to say Bernie MADE NEWS by dissing women's rights meaning her distortion of what he said.
She's a smart woman. She knows what she's doing. It's offensive.
'What we are left with is an agency mandated to ensure transparency and disclosure that is actually working to keep the public in the dark' - Ann M. Ravel, former FEC member
She did give her twice the time.
That in itself is an absurdity. She's not even attempting to give the illusion that she' s fair.
Selective editing...
Without seeing the interview contrivance, I really can't appreciate the effect of that splice and dice job created. But the very idea of willfully distorting anyone's words--even Hillary's--is abhorrent. If they speak, report what they spoke--not what you want to make it seem they spoke. Is there no shame anymore in the so-called Main Stream Media? Guess not. Ironically the only news outlet that gives true lefties a fair representation is RT. How ironic.
Gator Ed, well said. and bravo
it drives me mad when headlines are misleading, never mind when people intentionally try to distort data.
but I applaud your comment for this: you include "even Hillary" and that signals to me a fair and balanced intellect.
let's keep to that standard here. always.

I totally agree
You want to make headlines out of people "misspeaking"? Go for it.
But to deliberately take a single sentence or a few words out of context is no better than just flat out making up what someone said. It shouldn't be done to anyone, Republicans, Hillary or anyone else. Let people be hanged by their own words. Or not at all.
Its really disgraceful. And especially from MSNBC, with all their endless talk about how horrible Fox News is, and how they manipulate information, blah blah blah.
This election has been a real eye opener for me. I mean, I always knew all corporate media was biased, but I don't think I realized the extent of it. Even my once-beloved NPR has proved itself to be a corporate slave. Its really been very sad and disheartening.
I hope Bernie
drops all press events at the WH and goes back to fireside chats....with Amy Goodman.

RChel lost me for good tonight...
To be honest I haven't watched msnbc In Weeks... They are just to dumb to care what they say and Rachel's style has always annoyed me... Spending more time teasing a "big news" whatever or other but barely giving any news. But tonight I tuned in at 10pm to see Bernie and all I got were questioned that basically skirted around the REAL question rachel seemed to be asking... So what ya getting out of this race loser.
Last straw... When Rachel asked if Bernie was going to use his fundraising prowess to actually help down ticket dems because hillaryyyy is doing it.
Sheeesh ... at that point I sent rachel a curt tweet that Bernie neither owns my vote or my Money, I donate because I WANT TO, not because he asks. U don't get it.
and then I again asked myself if I cared what rachel or Matthews or Todd or any of them think or say... Answered no and then changed the channel.
Orwell was an optimist
Matthews is even worse.
He fawns all over Hillary and then criticizes Bernie every chance he gets. The coverage on msnbc has proved to be atrocious this election, with everyone.
I can't stop laffing:
"Orwell was an optimist"!!!
“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.” Voltaire
thanks for this recap, MsGrin
thanks for this recap, MsGrin, you nailed it (I think!).
I did see that first part in real time - the time travel stuff with Hillary - but fell asleep before the Bernie segment. Hill practically filibustered there and yes, the implication was exactly as you say, and I know that even without seeing the Bernie clip, heh.
Is it just me or ... seems the ClintonStateMedia has intensified The Twisting of The Bern lately. Just outright lies.
"Susan Sarandon is gonna vote for Trump!!!"
"Bernie is courting SuperDelegates... urging them to betray their pledge to HRC even though he's losing the popular vote and delegate count and HAS NO CHANCE to win !!!"
and so on.
This whole campaign continues to pretend there is no internet.
Here's the clip LINK. MSHRC has it split into several segments looks like.
Thanks for the clip! n/t

She was absolutely smirking...
Rachel is just a highly paid establishment hack, imo. She has lost all credibility. First by working for MSNBC, and second by stabbing Bernie in the back several times recently.
Thank you for pointing this out MsGrin.
I missed the whole thing. I appreciate the people who go to the trouble (and not insignificant pain) to watch the MSM and then report back. The more we dissect their "stories" and lay bare their intentions, the clearer we can see how manipulative they are.
The thing that amazes me the most is how effective propaganda is. It works. I am even more astonished how easily it works in this country.
I stopped watching Rachel
I stopped watching Rachel a while ago, and it sounds like I did it just in time to not burst an aneurysm. Damn. I used to like her so much, but I guess that $7 million a year requires some payback to the machine after all.
I used to watch Rachel Maddow
I used to watch Rachel Maddow every day (I taped her show). Since Bernie began running I felt that her coverage was biased and limited towards him (and also all she spoke about was Drumpf and Repugs).
I no longer watch her show or tape her.
She lost a loyal viewer.
Go Bernie !!
I've never watched MSNBC
And given cable viewing numbers, I know I'm not the only one.
This won't alter the election.
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
Deceptive practices, that is the new MSM model
I cut the satellite cord a year ago. No more relying on selective reporting of days-old events for me. I used TOP as a primary news source for a while, and then it suddenly stopped there. Less news, more opinion, and finally the Hillary banner flew.
There should be time/date stamps on ALL interviews, running time so that editing can be seen. That will never happen, of course. Propaganda 24/7 plus shopping channels and reality TV that in earlier times would have been situation comedies or sit-drama that lasted three episodes than were then dropped.
When I even mention the word "propaganda" in the wrong crowd I get the side-eye, and am probably marked paranoid. Another crazy lady. I don't have cats, though.

Propaganda is what it is: and has been for years
Advertising and marketing: morphed into market manipulation; now it just feels like massive psy-ops. Bye Rachel . . . you got great ratings for a time and you blew it: insulting your audience with cheap, sleazy tricks. DONE
Did I read that Keith is coming back to the airwaves?
I used to think he and Rachel were symbiotic in their rebellion. Maybe not anymore.
thank you for your reporting on this MsGrin
Rachael is turning into just anther hack, misinforming, intentionally misleading, and basically manufacturing a lie on behalf of another liar, Hillary Clinton.
She was, at one time, a very fine reporter.

I so agree with you, JayRaye.
I haven't watched Rachel in a long time. Her paycheck is driving her rhetoric, anymore. Living large is addicting and does something negative to the soul.

A shameful exhibition of unprofessionalism. "There is a special place in hell" for newscasters with such low ethics.
Oh yeah, I saw it
so low, so despicable. It is no surprise that they left the smearing for the late night audience and didn't continue the next day, even they knew that this wouldn't play well without subtlety.

Saw it, hated it!
Absolutely appalling. Normally, I avoid all tv news, but my husband saw it and said 'Please watch, you won't believe me if you don't see it for yourself." MSNBC is just an HRC affiliate now.
