All three Latin American coup leaders have covid-19

There are 33 nations in Latin America.
Thirty have various forms of democracy, some better some worse.
In those thirty nations none of the presidents have Covid-19.

Three nations in Latin America are run by coup leaders.
All three coup leaders have Covid-19.

What are the odds of that?

The latest to get Covid-19 is Bolivia's "interim president" Jeanine Añez.
Interim president is an interesting term for someone who was installed into office by the military. Añez is a racist, fundamentalist Christian from a minority party that barely got enough votes to get into parliament.

This comes just days after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tested positive for covid-19.
Bolsonaro came to office via a soft coup or judicial coup, depending what you call it.
First President Dilma Rousseff was impeached for trivial offense.
Then Brazil's chief prosecutor conspired with the Bolsonaro campaign to throw former president Lula into prison for a manufactured offense, when all the polls showed that Lula would easily win the election.

Finally there is Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández.
Hernandez didn't come into the presidency via a coup, but he is there courtesy of the 2009 military coup. The regime elections since the coup have been laughably fraudulent and have no legitimacy with the populace.
Honduras has become the biggest narco state in the Western Hemisphere, but our government continues to support it.

that its a PR effort. None of them have exhibited leadership on this matter. Results to date are poor in Honduras compared with El Salvador and Costa Rica, but not as bad as non-neighbor Bolivia. Brazil is poor compared to Argentina and Paraguay, and very poor compared to Venezuela.

If they don't become ill and don't disclose how they were infected, I'd raise the odds of a PR stunt.

@Marie
Bolsonaro, for example, was a leading coronavirus denier.
He leaned into it more than anyone else in the world.

So him getting infected with covid-19 is a HUGE embarrassment.
Humiliating even.

This is the opposite of a PR stunt. This is karma.

I'll have to respectfully disagree. I think there is a good chance that Bolsonaro, at least, is faking his infection, as I said in an earlier post. He knows that the virus is totally out of control in Brazil, and he seems to be unable or unwilling to take the necessary steps. Does that remind us of someone? Like our 99% survival rate braggart? Bolsie has dismissed CV as a "little flu", and bragged that his athletic constitution would easily fight it off. His best chance to come out smelling better is to make the virus look trivial. As I said in that other comment, we should be looking for an infection cluster around him as evidence of reality - like the US ambassador, who was in close proximity to him. If he says he's infected, and a week or so later comes out in glowing health, he can affirm that it's just a "little flu" and get back to his real work, such as destroying the Amazon. The beauty of that tactic is that it would be next to impossible to prove the falsity.

Maybe I just have a nasty, suspicious mind, but we shouldn't rule out the possibility.

Edit: if he IS sick, I'd call it a consequence of probability, rather than karma, due to irresponsible behavior. But maybe we're just saying the same thing Smile .

@pindar's revenge

If he says he's infected, and a week or so later comes out in glowing health, he can affirm that it's just a "little flu" and get back to his real work, such as destroying the Amazon.

It's possible that he's stupid enough to think that'll work, but if he's that dumb then it's more likely this is an embarrassing situation, like I mentioned.

@gjohnsit The guy is the President of Brazil as he and his cohorts took down two of the most popular presidents in the history of Brazil. So, it's no more difficult to snooker Brazilians than it is Americans.

(Not that Trump will personally try this stunt. Much too vain and invested with his self-aura of being invincible. Why he's probably never had so much as a cold in his entire life.)

@pindar's revenge tracks with my consideration of a ploy. As good as new in two weeks and he can come out swinging as having done his part in developing herd immunity in Brazil and he doesn't want to hear anything more from the whiners.

They have been rather successful lately and are chafing at the bit to turn Venezuela. It's mind boggling how the CIA got a host of Western nations to recognize the unelected self proclaimed pseudo-president Juan Guaidó, and got the Bank of England to deny Venezuela their own gold. Trump has turned up the pressure lately and is threatening with absolutes. Venezuelans will fight and they are well armed. This is a quagmire that Trump could not extricate himself from, certainly not before the election. Since the Democrat party has been screaming for blood it will probably get much worse if Biden gets elected, especially with Susan Rice as SOS or SOD. Expect John Bolton, Samantha Power, John Clapper and Hillary Clinton to be appointees and advisors will include Dick Cheney, Henry Kissinger, George W. Bush, John McCain (posthumously), Donald Rumsfeld, and all of the other war mongers so beloved by the Democrat Party. Do you think that Biden's goal will be to improve relations with North Korea, China, Russia, Venezuela? These are all "adversaries" and they must be kept that way to justify financing the war department. The world situation will turn grim. I have seen no indication to think otherwise.
I'm not surprised that the three dictators have covid-19. Whenever we coup a Socialist leaning government we install a dumb thug, because that's what prefer and that's what we do.

Capitalism has always been the rule of the people by the oligarchs. You only have two choices, eliminate them or restrict their power.
