Democrats AWOL during the economic crisis

5e74fd53260000082db670e3.jpeg

Biden and Nancy have not stepped up in this time of need

In the Democratic Party, it registers as widespread loyalty to a leadership that is increasingly obviously unfit for the emergency at hand. We face not only a crisis of leadership, but a crisis of democracy in which members of both parties accept calamitous government as normal and inevitable.

What does the Democratic Party even stand for?

An endless parade of centrists vied for the 2020 Democratic nomination not by talking about ideas, but by talking about competence, leadership and other intangibles while warning that candidates that did talk about ideas were too dangerous and scary.

One of those centrists, Biden, has now all but sewn up the nomination — and made himself all but invisible as the worst economic and public health crisis in generations has blossomed. Meeting the other guy halfway is a nice idea, but to do it, you have to start from somewhere yourself. A party that doesn’t really believe in anything will have a hard time putting up serious proposals in a crisis.

Of course the republicans aren't doing any better:

An Utter Disgrace': GOP Stimulus Plan Would Cut Taxes for Corporations While Denying Benefits to Poorest

"Heartless," "cruel," and "appalling" were just some of the adjectives progressive critics and analysts used late Thursday to describe the Senate GOP's newly unveiled trillion-dollar economic stimulus package which—by design—would completely deny direct cash payments to the poorest Americans while cutting taxes for corporations, dishing out tens of billions in bailout funds to major industries, and restricting paid leave benefits that were just signed into law this week.

"The Senate GOP package is an utter disgrace," tweeted Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO. "It gives free money to corporations, ignores the health crisis, and does nothing to keep people working or help the unemployed. The labor movement will oppose this Main St. bailout of Wall St. with everything we have."

The Republican plan, released as the economic fallout from the coronavirus outbreak continues to worsen, would provide means-tested cash payments of up to $1,200 per adult and $500 per child, with the precise amount dependent upon 2018 tax filings.

"Taxpayers with little or no income tax liability, but at least $2,500 of qualifying income, would be eligible for a minimum rebate check of $600 ($1,200 married)," the Republican proposal states. "Qualifying income includes earned income, as well as Social Security retirement benefits and certain compensation and pension benefits paid to veterans."

Unfortunately Jimmy is falling for what he is hearing and not see how congress has blocked most of the things he is talking about.

I have been talking about Trump wanting cut payroll taxes and some folks here say he isn't going to do that. This is exactly what corporations are asking for. Not having to pay for social security, medicare and unemployment taxes. But with millions not working right now and none of those taxes are being paid what do you think congress will eventually with this crisis that Rahm says should never go to waste?

Bernie is still trying to get us help:

'Not Done Yet': Bernie Sanders Campaign Mobilizes Donors for Coronavirus Relief and Raises $2 Million

hey has anyone seen joe since tuesday

Here is a great idea:

Tlaib's "Automatic BOOST Act" calls for a universal payout of $2,000 to everyone in the U.S. and $1,000 a month after that.

But of course there is always money for war and killing people. Redundant I know, but I am pissed at this:

According to Politico, the request for more F-35s came from Democrats and Republicans alike:

"It is essential that we continue to increase production of our nation's only 5th generation stealth fighter in order to ensure the United States maintains air dominance and to further reduce overall program costs," the lawmakers wrote in a letter to the chairmen and top Republicans of the House Armed Services Committee and Defense Appropriations panel.

The letter was spearheaded by the co-chairs of the Congressional Joint Strike Fighter Caucus — Reps. John Larson (D-Conn.), Marc Veasey (D-Texas), Martha Roby (R-Ala.) and Mike Turner (R-Ohio).

What if we gave a war but there were no humans left to fight? None left to fly these planes. What if we gave a war and no one came because they were mourning their dead and nursing the living. What if we finally just didn’t give a fuck about war and the war toys these boys(and some girls) just love to use to kill people far away.
I spit my coffee this morning when I saw this headline:

Rachel Maddow goes on a hypocritical rant

Trump Irresponsible, Dangerous w/Lies

Hey, Rachel, let's talk about how you lied to the country about the IRA 'Russian troll farm' shall we?

Seriously LMAO here. Rachel is on the verge of tears because Mueller charged the 13 Russian trolls and was close to saving the country from Russia. Oh boy. But I'm sure Rachel didn't tell her viewers that a judge told Robert to quit saying that they had ties to the Russian government nor will she tell them that they dropped the charges. Mueller never expected anyone to show up to defend their client and the reason the charges were dropped was because the defense didn't want to share its evidence.

Yes Trump has been lying his tush off during the epidemic and has totally dropped the ball which is going to have catastrophic effects, but is Rachel even aware of how hypocritical and silly this makes her look? It sure does for me.

An unhinged Russia phobe

Lol even Kos is saying that the media should do this. This after his site pushed every damn lie on Russia Gate and pushed Russia phobic content. There is a diary on the wretched list right now on how Putin is lying about how bad the epidemic in in Russia because you know he's a dictator and that's what they do. And of course Trump is taking his cues and orders from Vlad cuz you know... reasons.

Both the lie and the ignorance are fucking dangerous. So why the hell are the news networks still airing this shit live?

Even if one of the UBI proposals passes, and if it isn't means tested (you have no means? no money for you!), how does it affect existing benefits? Lose food stamps, OK, that's still a net positive. Lose Medicaid as the pandemic spreads and you're facing a medical emergency? Buy private insurance with UBI? HAHAHAHA.
Now, if they say that you can keep your benefits, get UBI with no means testing, and the UBI isn't taxed .. shit, I'll vote for Trump and call him the greatest President since FDR!

I watched the rest of the livestream to the end, and after Tulsi said goodbye and signed off, Jimmy and Stef both were literally in tears. For several minutes, JD had nothing at all to say except “what a heartbreaker” which he said a few times, then he just sat there, on-air, and grieved until he pulled himself together and moved on to another topic. Tulsi put her entire career on the line while running for president. It has been evident from the start the DNC hates and fears much more than Bernie the bendable. Tulsi did not ask for favors in a a mythical Biden administration.

he had his political principles and ideological foundation not changed in his whole life, if I understand that correctly. He offered consistancy and a polite demeanor vis a vis his opponents in the campaign. Nothing wrong with that. He was cheated by the DNC a second time.

Tulsi is young, was unknown outside of the small DC political elite and had a lot to lose. She didn't mind losing it. Because she lived through the efforts of take her out of the campaign as a competitor by the DNC, understood the realities and quite logically handled the consequences.

I had wished that Sanders gets the nomination with her as a VP. The DNC would have never allowed that to happen. So, I guess it's time to get out of that club.

I am not mad at Tulsi. I am not mad at Sanders. I am even not THAT mad at Biden, though mad enough to hope for him to resign and self-quarantaine himself from all political life.

Look, I've got no dog in this fight. Liked what Tulsi was saying, and respected her when she stepped down from the DNC in 2016, but I never felt emotionally invested in her candidacy. I also respected the fact that TG was willing to stand up to the DNC (both to defend Bernie, and, herself), and, especially, to take on FSC--when she accused her of being a Russian asset, or, whatever.

I've posted in the past, about a couple of her conservative stances. Even posted a video, here. So, I had somewhat mixed feelings about her. Having said that, some aspects of her character, policy stances, and poise, definitely, very much impressed me. (There will never, IMO, be much of an expansion of the US social safety net, unless/until our military interventions are greatly curtailed.)

It was all over Twitter that he went to bat to have O'Malley allowed to debate him and FSC in 2016 (that is, when the DNC/DP PtB were trying to shut him out of a debate, based on not having sufficient support/stats).

So, perhaps TG had a major case of bruised feelings. (not to say that it wouldn't have been better for her to try to overcome those feelings, if that was the problem) Smile

Haven't seen anything about her support/endorsement being refused. Plausible, though, since he still holds a Dem Leadership position, and the C's are considered to be so-called Party icons (by some). After all, once he was chastised by the Dem Leadership for using the term "DP Establishment" (in a derogatory manner), he immediately began using the terms "political Establishment," or, just "the Establishment." My impression is that the DP Leadership cheers him on for bringing the youth and/or Latino vote into the Party--so long as he stays in his place, otherwise. The relationship does not appear to be very reciprocal, as I've observed it. But, of course, I'm not privy to what goes on behind the scenes. (IOW, just speculation, on my part.)

I firmly believe that we'll probably get much (if not all) of the background story, before this election completely plays out. I sure hope so.

Special Health Care for Congress: Lawmakers' Health Care Perks
A little known office on Capitol Hill provides quality care at a low price.

Excerpt:

Sept. 30, 2009— -- This fall while members of Congress toil in the U.S. Capitol, working to decide how or even whether to reform the country's health care system, one floor below them an elaborate Navy medical clinic -- described by those who have seen it as something akin to a modern community hospital -- will be standing by, on-call and ready to provide Congress with some of the country's best and most efficient government-run health care.

Sources said when specialists are needed, they are brought to the Capitol, often at no charge to members of Congress.

"If you had, for example, prostate cancer, you would go to one of the centers of excellence for the country, which would be Johns Hopkins. If you had coronary artery disease, we would engage specialists at the Cleveland Clinic. You would go to the best care in the country. And, for the most part, nobody asked what your insurance was," Balbona said. (Balbona was a former OAP Staff Physician.)

In addition to Balbona, several former staff members and private physicians who have consulted at the OAP as recently as last year agreed to talk to ABC News on background. They described a culture centered on meeting the needs and whims of members of Congress, with almost no concern for cost.

Apparently, the tool bar has disappeared. Hopefully, this link will work.

MoveOn put up a petition to have this medical service repealed. When I have a chance to look for it, I'll post a link to it. Pleasantry

Have a good one!

@Dr. John Carpenter

I’m curious if Jimmy asked her about the rumors that she tried to endorse Sanders and got brushed off.

Tulsi’s reply each time was to state that her conversations with the Sanders campaign would remain private. I did not sense that there was anything in her reply that indicated she was doing anything more than honoring an agreement that those conversations are to remain private. Of course some will find it irresistible to fill in the blanks with their own assumptions or interpretations. Usually I feel compelled to do exactly that, but in this instance I feel no urgency to fill in this particular blank with a surmise.

Nothing unacceptable about Tulsi dropping out because her campaign was broke. Much like Warren. Nothing unacceptable about both of them endorsing Biden at the convention because they've always said they would support the nominee. Their supporters/voters can decide for themselves if those endorsements mean anything for them during the general election cycle.

Not acceptable for Tulsi to tell those who have not yet voted in their primary that their votes are more irrelevant than usual, and it's time to get on board the Biden bus. Nor am I interested in hearing any excuses from her or from anybody that stupidly fell so in love with her that they can't recognize her excuses for what they are and what they reveal about her.

Dennis Kucinich had more class, convictions, and courage:

In January 2008, Kucinich was excluded from a Democratic presidential debate on MSNBC due to his poor showing in the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries. A ruling that the debate could not go ahead without Kucinich was overturned on appeal.[35] Later that month, Kucinich dropped out of the race, and did not endorse any other candidate. He later endorsed Barack Obama after he had won the nomination.

Last I heard Biden "desparately" wants to communicate with the American people during this time of crisis, but he's working on getting the techinogly updated in his home to do that. Uh-huh. Maybe he should talk to one of his grandkids and they can show him how to do a video by logging onto Instagram?

Democrats AWOL during the economic crisis. You weren't looking for them or Burr, and Loeffler etc. in the correct location. They all were at their stock brokers' offices making their insider trading deals. Yes, my (?) Senator, Dianne Fineswine was talking in her sleep to her husband, the executor of her "blind" trust (horseshit, ah, horse shit...please forgive my sneezes) about the wondrous coming of a Rahm Emmanuel Crisis Bonanza called the Wu Flu. Certainly such an upstanding elder stateswoman like DF would never be so crass as to engage in insider trading. No, ms dawg. DiFi let her blind husband do the work.

And I'm sorry but I don't see how this relates to what I wrote about here. I'm aware of what they did with their stocks. Of course they are doing whatever the hell they want because they have written rules that allow them to. What I'm talking about is how both parties are giving everything to those who don't need it while screwing those who do.

only those folks who are currently in the work force, or, are 'gainfully employed.'

Maybe--since DT has so many older/senior supporters--Repubs will overrule them. There is, after all, an election in several months. (???)

Anyhoo, McConnell intends to negotiate an agreement NLT Monday (he told Dana Bash, CNN).

IIRC, seniors who have no tax liability, probably won't qualify. (based upon the 2018 Tax Year/Returns)

She has the fortitude to say what is on her mind, not play the DC games, and hopefully further contribute to our nation beyond her service in the National Guard.

Endorsing Biden now when Biden still needs 800 more...

if her endorsement means anything it's that the people who've liked her will also go for Biden. That's the purpose of an endorsement, right? So if she'd endorsed Bernie it would, again theoretically, help him and with so many delegates still needed, make the race closer...because it's not over!!!

What I mean is by endorsing Biden she IS playing the DC games!

For not being sufficiently steadfast in our support. We got a little distracted by the demoralizing electoral fraud going on against Bernie and must've lost our windmill tipping gear along the way.

@Anja Geitz I've seen people on this site worry occasionally about whether we're turning into DailyKos all over again. The concern is understandable and valid, and what we need to do about it is watch out for the bad habits this site HAS picked up from there - and the ones I see, specifically, are pessimism, snark, and unproductive emotionalism.

Interesting that you should happen to use the word "demoralizing". "Morale" has always struck me as a bizarre concept: When things get bad, it makes you perform WORSE, and when things are good, you perform BETTER? How stupid is that? Shouldn't you want to achieve your best performance when you MOST NEED IT (i.e. when things look bleakest)?

We ALL need to make our emotions work for us, and not the other way around - and frankly, Don Quixote is a frickin' role model (especially where politics are concerned).
