I may be out for a while.
I have been experiencing what I thought were hot flashes--and they may be. But I woke up this morning with a sore throat, and I don't feel well. That could still be allergies+hot flashes, or just the ordinary flu. But I'm going to stay in my room today and see how it goes.
The computer is in our rec room where we spend most of our time, so I need to get out of here ASAP in case I have the virus and Kate does not yet have it. Therefore, if I'm isolating myself, I won't have computer access. And an update for those who are interested--Kate did not receive the organs; they were given to a child in line ahead of her (and all kids are in line ahead of all adults, which is not a problem for me. Next after that are adults with small children, and then, after that, people like Kate.)
Anyway, I'm setting up an OT for Sunday, but it won't be anything special, just a few tunes.
Hopefully this is nothing. I will keep y'all posted as I can.
Don't let the bastards grind you down.

it is just from sleeping with your mouth open, or something innocuous such as that.
Let me give Kate a hug in your stead, and you just stay back, do no harm.

Thanks, otc
Well, the sore throat could also be allergies (lots of pollen around now, and spring is my bad time). And the waking up in a hot sweat 3X last night could easily be hot flashes. I'm taking a new support medication for thyroid (herbs, vitamins, minerals) and if it's actually having an effect on my hormones, this wave of hot flashes I've been having over the past ten days or so could be easily explained. The low energy could easily be the fact that I only got twelve hours of sleep over the past three days.
Even if I have something, it could easily be the flu.
I'm not coughing or sneezing, have no runny nose and no loss of breath. Just a sore throat, some fatigue, and what certainly appear to be hot flashes (it can be a subtle difference between that and flashes of fever, but the hot flashes seem to go away faster, and when they do, I end up basically normally cool. With fever, it goes from warm to hot or hot to very hot and back.
Sorry, I'm babbling!
It occurred to me that I'm being stupid and overreactive--after I wiped down all the surfaces I touch a lot with antibacterial gel and relocated my stuff into my bedroom. We are pot smokers. Kate and I have shared a bong as recently as last night.
It just isn't particularly easy to isolate members of a family from one another.

shallots
one tablespoon raw shallot every 4-6 hours. I eat them with a half a banana. But can be eaten in a more civilized manner on toast or whatever. Must be raw.

Does it have to be shallots or will any oniony thing do?

Shallots
Work the best. Similar to garlic but does not lower blood pressure as garlic does. Both have natural antibiotic like substances but also work well for viruses. And shallots especially for bronchial issues. Very effective. Onions not nearly as effective.
Also best thing for bronchial phlegm is steam. I use a small pot of water with only a half inch of water. Boil. Pull off and quickly add a drop of eucalyptus oil and breath deeply in. Need to do it fast so fumes get into bronchies. Also important to have small pot and not to have too much water I think because too much steam can hurt.

On GMA this morning they were warning 60 and ups
to stay home. My husband still has cancer treatments in the city until March 20, so can’t do that.
You take care. It’s most like either allergies or a cold or at worst the flu.

Masks are not useful
unless you are infected. A microbiologist friend of mine said that only use the mask if you have the virus so as not to infect others. Using a mask without infection is a waste. Just passing on info.

Andrew Weil recommends raw garlic, which you can chop into small, pill-sized pieces and swallow with water. If taken in the early stages of the common cold/flu, it works amazingly well.

Garlic lowers the blood pressure
So you need to be careful. Shallots don’t lower the blood pressure and have a similar effect as garlic but are better for respiratory issues in my experience.

As I understand it
Having a fever is symptomatic of most viruses, including COVID-19. Do you have a thermometer in the house?

I'm actually fine--and yes I do have a thermometer--
but how do hot flashes show up on a thermometer? I'm still new to this menopause thing.

The hot flashes wouldn't show up on a thermometer
But if you had a fever, that would show up on the themometer, which is why I asked.
Relieved to hear you're ok. Seriously. For you and Kate's sake.
Speaking of health issues, I got a recorded phone call from the head physician of my insurance provided medical group regarding the coronaviruis. Frankly, I'm not sure what to think. I mean, yeah, sure I get calls like this from this particular medical group soliciting flu shots and mammogram screening, but that's not what this phone call felt like. They basically informed me that up 30 patients have already been diagnosed with COVID-19 in California, that most patients have a mild form, and risk factors effect older patients and patients with existing healthy problems. Then they went on to reassure me that they are doing "everything they can to protect the health of their patients and the community", but didn't say what the was (not surprisingly). And then reminded me to do "my part", which is stay home if I'm sick. Wash my hands frequently. Don't touch my eyes, nose or mouth. And if I have a fever, they gave me a number to a hotline I can call with questions. End of call.
Maybe they're just being proactively responsible?

On the lighter side
Came up with a joke today, a fellow captain came up from the caribe, hadn't seen her for awhile. Never sweat the small stuff
It was one of those easy things with something like a 1% chance of complications. I didn't mention it because, I live in a different world than most, and it was (is) not much of a story. When I started living here, in the Bear Creek Valley, I frequently encountered this particularly well known scientist. After a few months of said encounters I realized that he had been fixated on my damaged face. I suddenly realized that he was probably concerned because he knew I have always been involved in particle and nuclear physics. He visibly (with a bit of reluctance) relaxed when I reassured him that I had not stepped into a particle beam or otherwise experienced a radiation burn. Funny, I had to describe all the details to put his mind at ease. Scientists, are such picky consumers of information.
Turns out: The oncologist did an awesome job carving out all the carcinoma without damaging anything close to my eye, yes! And, the restorative surgeon followed-up with such a good job that (as I suggested above) scaring will most likely be minimal. So, most likely, the only indication that something was amiss will be a small variation in skin coloring.
Perhaps I should do an essay on how, as we improve our healthcare system, we (well … actually our dependents) will, in the future, experience cancer as the primary factor defining life expectancy. On the other hand: it took me about 20 minutes to wordsmith that last sentence, so maybe not.
RIP

Hey, CStMS--hope you'll feel much better,
soon. And, obviously, that Kate's name quickly ascends to the top of the transplant list. Hopefully, hospital staff would take special care of her, to eliminate the likelihood of exposure to flu, or COVID-19.
Going to follow-up on some of the recommendations others have given you, as a precaution. Magi's might be especially helpful, for just building the immune system. (shallots and garlic) One thing we've been doing--shopping online, using pickup and delivery services--much more frequently. Gotta admit, sorta like it. Partly, for the added convenience.

Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
Hi There, thought i'd add a few and sum up some others.
Essential oils in steamy bowl are good for warding things off and cleaning nose, sinus, throat, bronchs.
Good for the face too. might look up essential oils for pollen allergies.
The shallot/garlic mixed with natural honey (creamy, has some comb in it) and lemon is good.
Drinking water with squeezed lemon is good: just keep several around to cut up and squeeze.
Old fashioned Hot Toddy with Whiskey or Bourbon/honey/lemon or orange.
Gargling with salt water (no iodine) and using a baby ear bulb or neti pot to rinse nose and sinuses really is amazingly helpful.
Epsom salt bath. Get the salts at a good grocery or hardware store. The little amount over-priced ones from a pharmacy can be of no help. Amazon has big bags reasonably priced.
Finally: chop fresh ginger, tumeric root, sprinkle black pepper corns and whole cloves into a pot of filtered water. Simmer for a few hours. Decant into a glass bottle or jar. Drink warm or cold. It's strong so I add wild honey and drink warm. Add lemon to this too.
That may be all I have for now. Best to you both.
