He said at least once that all he did to get his war hero title was get shot down and captured. Although I don't usually take politicians at their word, I am inclined to believe him.
And he did throw off some good one-liners. Also some incredibly sexist ones and some very cruel ones.
But, I can understand why he looms large in his daughter's mind, as well as why so many alt neolibercon Democrats seem so fond of him.
ETA: Just to clarify: McCain's looming large in his daughter's mind and why alt neoliberal cons were fond of him are unrelated. She's fond of him because he is her father. (Hence her TV presence.) The latter are fond of him because their politics are very similar, including war mongering: "Senator McCain and I are ready for that 3 a.m. phone call....."
