We stand proudly above the law and decency

That's a real, shameless CNN headline from today.
All pretense of caring about the people of Venezuela is gone.

Today, law enforcement agents broke into the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, D.C., and arrested the four remaining members of the Embassy Protection Collective. “We denounce these arrests, as the people inside were there with our permission, and we consider it a violation of the Vienna Conventions,” Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Ron said.

Vienna Convention?? Are we done violating the Geneva Convention?
Is violating the Geneva Convention something only Democrats do now?

That's OK because “more than 50 countries” agree with us.

As well, the “50 countries” that we in the US keep hearing which supposedly back Guaidó as Venezuela’s “legitimate leader” are realizing that they were hoodwinked by the US, and are mostly calling for a calmer response to the crisis in Venezuela, refusing to buy into US military threats against the Maduro government. Nobody mentions that over 140 countries in the world support Maduro as the leader of Venezuela.

In truth it’s impossible to find that list of “more than 50 countries” backing a self-proclaimed and unelected Guaidó as Venezuela’s president. The closest I could find by working google searches was a map produced by Bloomberg News listing 13 countries besides the US as supporting Guaidó. These included Canada, the UK, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. That is 13 plus the United States. Listed as supporting Maduro as elected President are Russia, China, Turkey, Bolivia, and Cuba, though I believe Bloomberg neglected to mention Nicaragua, a strong Maduro backer, which would make it six.

We are close to not even bothering to lie anymore.

from a reasonably stable genius.

if we were winning we wouldn't bother to talk

Venezuela’s government and opposition have sent envoys to Norway to attend talks on ways of ending the South American country’s crisis, though their mutual mistrust and differences on key issues are likely to reduce chances of progress.

The development reported by officials on Wednesday appeared to reflect a recognition that neither side had been able to prevail in the struggle for power, leaving Venezuela in a state of paralysis after years of hyperinflation and shortages of food and medicine.

It was also a policy reversal for the opposition, which has accused the president, Nicolás Maduro, of using previous negotiations to play for time.

Sounds like a consensus, if I've ever heard of one!

Nobody mentions that over 140 countries in the world support Maduro as the leader of Venezuela.

Oh, well,, in that case, "50" must be a typo.

500 countries AND all 17 intelligence agencies! Down with Pretender Maduro!

hit piece by cnn, esp. on maduro's failures to sell oil being blamed on 'the former bus driver' as the guardian usually note. nuttin' bot no sanctions, kicked out of ways to deliver it, trade it, nossir.

but i like the naked truth of the question, myself. if guaido, then Rexxon will get a hella lot of it. he/they've been drilling in the contested off-shore areas between VZ and guyana, so...there' that's a big ol' plum of an oil pool to consider.

but you can add haiti to list, and few smaller members of ALBA.

and AOC also as "bartender". Like blue collar work is demeaning. You never hear former Governor Rauner of Illinois described as "bloodsucking vulture capitalist." Oh, no. That's one of the in-circle jobs. Must keep those peasants out.

the embassy to my OPCW in douma diary, including this perhaps needlessly long piece from zeese and flowers the day before: May 15, zeese and flowers: ‘Showdown at the Venezuelan Embassy: Federal Authorities Back Down After Threatening to Evict Peace Activists Inside’ so yeah, someone put the hammer down/

i'd added this messed up tweet; notice how pale they are?

Guaido is recognized by the EU but it was left to individual members. I think Italy refused. Spain did, but the Prime Minister took some heat just before national elections so he cancelled meeting with Guaido's rep. He has since said that Spain will not take part in any military intervention in Venezuela. No other countries have recognized Guaido since February. They say he has been recognized by more than fifty countries and make it sound a lot, that would fool only the people who don't know that there are more than 190 members of the UN.

the international community adopted a standard by which the chief executive of any other given country is determined by a weighted vote of the chief executives of some other countries.

nor, for that matter, is the weighting scheme clear to me.

@on the cusp of EXXON, so Venezuela doesn't count for much in this scheme of things, does it? Better just to take it "off line" along with Iran. Maybe, that can be leveraged to pressure China to take a haircut on repayment on the two trillion or so Dollars we owe them for bailing out the US banks in 2009. The principal is coming due on a lot of those 10 year Treasury Bills they bought. Odd coincidence that. And, oh yes, Venezuela and Iran supply a lot of China's oil. Leverage.
