Beto, we hardly knew ye

Not looking good from the MSM's Margaret Carlson for Robert Francis.

Beto O’Rourke Blew It

Oh my

According to my unscientific poll asking every woman I see, Beto reminds them of the worst boyfriend they ever had: self-involved, convinced of his own charm, chronically late if he shows up at all, worth a meal or two but definitely not marriage material. When he should be home with the kids or taking out the trash, he’s jamming with his garage band or skateboarding at Whataburger. He’s “in and out of a funk” which requires long and meaningful runs to clear his head. Every thought he has is transcendent, worthy of being narrated, videotaped, and blogged. He is always out finding himself. At age 46, the man asking to run the country is currently lost.

More

Unlike O’Rourke, permanently at sea, Obama’s journey ended when he graduated and moved to the South Side of Chicago to be a community organizer. O’Rourke became a nanny for a family living in a classic six on the Upper West Side and wandered aimlessly about for another couple years trying to learn what it’s all about... He complained about that portrait of him in a long New York Times profile but he was in such a hurry to get to an audience with Oprah he blew off the Times with a short interview. He ignored advice that candidates known by one name should not be seen courting celebrities also known by one name. At least he escaped his Oprah lunch in LA without being given a nickname like Mayor Pete. No way “Battabeep, Buttaboop” gives a young mayor who’s left South Bend home alone more gravitas.

Strong to the hoop?

Or the end is nigh?

We still will have Bill DeBlasio (soon)? I understand the fly-over States adore him.

Seriously, this is just a checklist for everything that's "Wrong" with my generation according to the Media.

And "Good for a Meal or two"? Seriously? So you have no interest but are willing to take his money... I never could quite stomach that mentality from certain kinds of people. Glad to think that Ms. Carlson believes that one should think of presidential candidates like boyfriends. A boyfriend who apparently toes the line and does everything according to a nice playbook that everybody in the media has agreed is the "Proper" way to do things.

What? Like him? Hell no. I can't stand that kind of guy. Anybody who does things to be SEEN rather than to actually solve problems deserves everything he has coming to him. I just think it's shitty to string him along for a few meals. I wouldn't tolerate it in a man who does it to woman...

I do not pretend I know what I do not know.

@detroitmechworks a few dates to get to know someone. The daters might not have had ill-will to begin with, but it just turned out that way.

Beto does seem like a fool.

@dfarrah The Media were just going out with Beto and pretending they were in love with him because he was paying their bills for a few news cycles.

He's an idiot to do it, but IMHO it's not ethical to string somebody along with the promise of attention and love and drop them with a "I faked every Orgasm" when somebody cuter and more appealing comes along. I know that's kinda the Media's thing, of course... which is why I'd like to amend the old "Guy's Rule" about certain types of people...

"If the Media Says she loves you on the first date, that's a Red flag, right there."

@detroitmechworks Especially when you want name recognition.

As for Beto, he had his bounce on the trampoline and now he can aim a little lower. Not everyone gets to become president. But some can run for Senate or governor of their own state. Mostly likely governor in 2022, if he want to take his shot.

@detroitmechworks ,

for calling out the woman journalist, as you said this:

So you have no interest but are willing to take his money...

For what it's worth, I'm a woman who has extreme difficulty with corporate women who play both sides of the power dynamic.

@Linda Wood But demanding of full credit and input into all decisions. I HATE that game, and it's very common these days, because many men have started playing it too. (LOOKING AT YOU, Saint Obama)

Hell with it, I need some metal... but not metal...

i.e., "treating Presidential candidates like boyfriends". I think she was being literal. The women she knows are looking at Beto O'Rourke and thinking, "I know guys like this. I've dated guys like this. They're amusing and interesting at first, and then you realize that they're shallow and feckless. He'd make a bad husband ... or president ... or anything else important."

Nonetheless, I found your metaphorical extension, with the press as the exploiter and Beto as the over-confident dumbass who doesn't realize he's being used, to be quite on point.

@UntimelyRippd The exploited one, not the feckless guy. (I hope. Smile I ain't perfect and I'm sure that there's at least one or two former flames who would describe me thus. Probably more the "Shallow" part... because I consider specialization for insects.)

While I was watching Beto's announcement video -- with him waving his arms around and bouncing up and down in his seat, while his wife meekly sat scrunched in next to him on the sofa, casting "adoring" looks at him -- I felt kind of sorry for her.

She may be a billionaire's daughter, but money ain't everything. I suspect that she was groomed by her "daddy real estate bucks" to marry someone just like Beto, whom her father could control.

I don't know her, so I don't whether she would understand why I felt sorry for her, or whether she'll work up the gumption to get out of that relationship.

@detroitmechworks or is that Mayor Pete? I can’t remember.

I think your point is a great one. I’m slightly younger than O’Rourke and what you described is all the Gen-X complaints I had to hear growing up. Does he really think boomers are going to vote for a walking stereotype like that?

Idolizing a politician is like believing the stripper really likes you.

remember buttigieg's name, or figure out how it's pronounced.

they call him "polyglot mayor dude". it doesn't seem to be an appellation grounded in respect or admiration.

@UntimelyRippd people loved him until they got to know him, and then said, "Nah." Try for governor of Indiana, mayor Pete.

@SancheLlewellyn We’ve been punished enough with our governors. (Though it would be a neat irony going from a governor who legalized LGBT discrimination to an openly gay governor. Still, “Mayor Pete” strikes me as a “pragmatic, both sides have good points” kinda guy so what’s the diff really?)

@Dr. John Carpenter with Mayor Pete might make it worth it. Besides, it would keep Mike Pence up late at night.

Do the Dems have a deep enough bench to field a different candidate? I know very little about Indiana politics except the headlines.

Not Henry Kissinger's picture

doing her best Maureen Dowd impression. When the catty class turns on you....

So now buy Beto becomes bye Beto as scuttlebutt bids Buttigeig as best B-list Obama bamboozler. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Didn't help Beto's cause when he publicly courted Hillary money. Now the claws are out.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?
