As Trump declared in his State of the Union message, we will never let the United States become socialist. So saving the planet for our future generations is the ultimate socialist sin in the eyes of Trump and the majority of Congress who stood up and applauded that statement.
This is Trump's public salvo for preventing government funding of anything that benefits the American people, including measures that will make our planet livable for future generations while creating millions of living wage jobs. Instead we are marching ever faster toward extinction while spending Trillions of dollars on wasteful wars that leave our own soldiers maimed and dead while killing millions of innocent people.
I am still dumbfounded why the American people have not yet risen up in revolution. I thought it would happen with Occupy. In the end, it appears that very few people are willing to commit to even a modest amount of protest or public action. We are all lemmings rushing to our own destruction while we continue to hold tight to our guns and wasteful lifestyles because we are afraid of "socialism."

The recently popular concept of a "Deep State" is not actually anything new, in the sense of an organic, informal network of professional government bureaucrats who run things more or less as they like, regardless of who happens to be elected.
The "old" British sitcoms Yes, Minister, and Yes, Prime Minister present this culture quite well -- the newly appointed Cabinet minister (a lifetime party hack -- his name is even Hacker) -- quickly discovers that he has no meaningful power or authority, constrained as he is by the various explicit rules and implicit culture of the civil service, as well as politics in general (we see some similar stuff happen in The West Wing, where time and again initiatives are thwarted by "pragmatism". it's worth noting that Aaron Sorkin doesn't seem to particularly object to this "reality".).
So, one of the problems with term limits is that they tilt the balance even further towards the unelected technocrats. If every representative and senator were limited to, say, 12 years in office, you'd be ensuring that nobody in congress had the memory and the institutional expertise to go toe to toe with the technocrats. I don't have an easy solution to this. I have a lot of very radical ideas, but without getting deeply into them, I wouldn't mind seeing 12-year limits for Representatives, 18-year limits for Senators, and 24-year limits for Supreme Court justices. The size of the court would be expanded to 12, and the justices' terms would be fixed to expire in odd-numbered years, staggered on 2-year intervals, so that every President would appoint exactly 2 justices. If a justice died in office, the seat would remain empty until the term naturally expired.
