NewsGuard is Rewriting History of the Russia Gate Saga

Russia Even Used Pokémon Go to Hack the 2016 Election. Here’s How

And so it begins. NewsGuard is rewriting what happened during the 2016 election and whoboy did they put a lot of work into this report. First off here is their article about how Pokémon was infiltrated by Russians to get people to vote for Trump instead of Hillary.

A Russian-operated disinformation group incorporated Pokémon Go into its extensive attacks targeting the 2016 presidential election, according to a report commissioned by the Senate Intelligence Commission. The effort relied in part on an invented group that claimed to be affiliated with Black Lives Matters, and which targeted African-American voters.

CNN first reported the Pokémon Go connection in October 2017, and the Senate report, released today, provides significant confirmation.

Targeted users were encouraged to change their Pokémon Go names to that of victims of police brutality, according to researchers at New Knowledge, a company that more typically works to protected brands against disinformation campaigns. New Knowledge was given access to a large array of posts across Facebook, (FB, +0.96%) Twitter, (TWTR, +2.02%) and Alphabet (GOOG, -0.51%) properties and other platforms to examine Russia’s Internet Research Agency attempts to sway voters.

Pokémon Go is an augmented-reality game developed by Niantic Labs, in which players have to visit specific real-world locations to collect Pokémon characters or perform training actions. In a statement, Niantic noted in a statement that the disinformation effort asked those targeted to “take screenshots from their phone and share over the social networks, not within our game.” The company said that “our game assets were appropriated and misused in promotions by third parties without our permission” and “our platform was in no way being used.”

The Senate report stated that the Russian campaign used Pokémon Go as one piece of a larger campaign to recruit African-Americans via social media, games, and other methods through topics believed to generate interest, like police brutality. After gaining trust and interest, these accounts then encouraged potential black voters to stay away from the polls or vote for third-party candidates.

According to the report, Russian operatives created messages like “Black people don’t have to vote for Hillary because she is liar! Black people are smart enough to understand that Hillary doesn’t deserve our votes!” and “Stop being slave of Democrat plantation!” The messages and graphics created for the campaign appear to contain basic mistakes in English grammar uncommon to American speakers of any dialect, such as on one contest promotion: “We will send a $100 Amazon Gifting Card to the person who will capture most GYMS.”

With the data provided by social-media and other platforms, New Knowledge was able to connect directly email addresses and other accounts used to coordinate campaigns across the Internet, and more effectively identify state actors

This information is not on any of the reports that we have seen before, but according to New Knowledge that is what happened. How many people are going to believe this?

Here is who wrote the senate report:

ANALYSIS BY

Renee DiResta, Dr. Kris Shaffer, Becky Ruppel, David Sullivan, Robert Matney, Ryan Fox (New Knowledge)

Nah. This isn't suspicious at all now is it? This report is 99 pages long and you have to see some of the graphics that were supposedly used by the Russian Internet Agency. Here are two of my favorites.

Struggling with addiction to masturbation? Reach out to me and we will beat it together - Jesus

You can't hold hands with gawd when you are masturbating

Here's a few excerpts from the report.

Broadly, Russian interference in the U.S. Presidential Election of 2016 took three distinct forms, one of which is within the scope of our analysis:

1. Attempts to hack online voting systems (as detailed by a United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report)

2. A cyber-attack targeting the Democratic National Committee, executed by the GRU, which led to a controlled leak via Wikileaks of email data related to the Clinton Presidential campaign team

3. A sweeping and sustained social influence operation consisting of various coordinated disinformation tactics aimed directly at US citizens, designed to exert political influence and exacerbate social divisions in US culture

This last form of interference, a multi-year coordinated disinformation effort conducted by the Russian state-supported Internet Research Agency (IRA), is the topic of this analysis.

The United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) began an investigation into the IRA’s social media activities following the 2016 election around the same time that investigative journalists and third-party researchers became aware that IRA’s campaign had touched all major platforms in the social network ecosystem. In March 2018, some of the social platform companies misused by the IRA (Twitter, Facebook, and Alphabet) provided the SSCI with data related to IRA influence operations. Facebook’s data submission includes Facebook Page posts and Instagram account content. Alphabet’s data submission includes Google AdWords and YouTube video and channel data. The data set reveals that Alphabet’s subsidiaries YouTube, G+, Gmail, and Google Voice were each leveraged to support the creation and validation of false personas

In addition to FB, Twitter and Google, the IRA also used the following sites. Funny how we are just hearing about this now after the report was made up.

Evidence provided by these companies to SSCI ties the IRA operation to widespread activity on other popular social platforms including Vine, Gab, Meetup, VKontakte, and LiveJournal. Several complete websites were created to host original written content, and to provide source material for related social accounts and personas. The breadth of the attack included games, browser extensions, and music apps created by the IRA and pushed to targeted groups, including US teenagers. The popular game Pokémon Go was incorporated into the operation, illustrating the fluid, evolving, and innovative tactical approach the IRA leveraged to interfere in US politics and culture.

Several platforms that con rmed the presence of IRA interference operations (Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, and Medium) were not part of the formal SSCI investigation or data requests, and that content was not included in the SSCI data set. They have cooperated with law enforcement, and their information has been incorporated into a parallel Department of Justice investigation; the Mueller indictment of Russian nationals, Netyksho et al, dated 07/13/18, speci cally references Tumblr-based interference operations. In the interest of thorough analysis, New Knowledge took initiative to also analyze relevant data from Reddit, Tumblr, and Pinterest in addition to the data set provided by SSCI.

Weren't we told that the IRA spent $100,00 to place the ads and that 60% or so were placed after the election?

The IRA began its operations in mid-2013 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Run like a sophisticated marketing agency in a centralized of ce environment, the IRA employed and trained over a thousand people to engage in round-the-clock influence operations, rst targeting Ukrainian and Russian citizens, and then, well before the 2016 US election, Americans. The scale of their operation was unprecedented — they reached 126 million people on Facebook, at least 20 million users on Instagram, 1.4 million users on Twitter, and uploaded over 1,000 videos to YouTube. As Department of Justice indictments have recently revealed, this manipulation of American political discourse had a budget that exceeded $25 million USD and continued well into 2018. IRA documents indicate the 2017 operational budget alone was $12.2 million US dollars. Independent researchers and social platforms were aware of the IRA as early as 2015, and its activities on Facebook are well-documented and discussed in detail in Adrian Chen’s “The Agency”. Subsequent glimpses into the operational structure and strategy of the IRA can be found in the February 2018 indictment of 13 Russian nationals by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and the September 28, 2018 criminal complaint of United States of America v. Elena Alekseevna Khusyaynova

(A) This is from New Knowledge and NewsGuard, so it's propagandistic nonsense from the get-go. (The leadership of those entities and their previous activities have been enumerated in many other threads here at c99p.)

(B) Um, are Pokemon Go players old enough to vote? Is any of them African-American? And is "Gifting Card" a uniquely Russian mistake to make? None of this, not any detail, makes a bit of sense.

and (C) Are New Knowledge and NewsGuard's human resources offices instructed to turn down any potential employee with an IQ above 3?

I have written many of those threads here. What is new in this report is that they wrote the scathing senate report that we were all blasted with as breaking news a few weeks ago. And what they changed in the senate report is the amounts of money that the IRA spent on ads and how many other websites they targeted. In other words they are changing what was said to have happened in regards to the IRA which had nothing to do with interfering with the election. Lots of the ads have been posted previously, but there are many, many new ones somehow found in the senate report. Not only changing the news, but making it up too.

They also targeted many teenagers according to the report. Now most cannot vote so was that a set up for the next election when they want to pull this rabbit out of the hat if they don't like how the election went?

To the extent that we are going to continue faux democracy, it is now imperative that term limits go into place, if not legally then in people's minds:

No elected official shall have more than one term.

The longer they have been there, the more sick and dangerous they become.

No, it wasn't always that way. But it's the way it is now.

It clearly adheres to the letter of The Constitution if the government is not imposing the censorship, but rather the Corporations that own the government do it. See? All legal!

Trump Associate Roger Stone Indicted In Mueller Investigation

Stone has previously admitted to being in contact with Julian Assange of WikiLeaks during the Trump campaign.

The indictment alleges he spoke “to senior Trump Campaign officials” about WikiLeaks and “information it might have had that would be damaging” to the campaign of Trump’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, in the summer before the election.

Stone was “contacted by senior Trump Campaign officials to inquire about future releases” by WikiLeaks, according to the indictment, which refers to WikiLeaks as “Organization 1.”

*
The July 2018 indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officers in connection with the hack of a Democratic National Committee server during the 2016 election referred to Stone as “a person who was in regular contact with senior members of the presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump.”

Stone has described his contact with the Russians ― who used the handle “Guccifer 2.0” ― as “benign.” He told The Washington Post that he met with a Russian national who wanted to sell Trump damaging information on Hillary Clinton for a sum of $2 million. The man had previously worked as an informant for the FBI, but told the Post that he was not working on the FBI’s behalf when he met with Stone in May 2016.

Stone’s indictment came after his associate Randy Credico, a radio show host, testified before the grand jury.

I hope Stone pleads not guilty and makes Mueller prove that actually happened because Mueller would have to produce those 12 Russians in court. We all know what happened when the lawyers from one of the agencies Mueller indicted showed up. Mueller was caught off guard and tried to hide behind national security to keep the lawyers from seeing the evidence.

With respect to the Stone arrest mostly (but I could be wrong, I'm dropping in to read news sporadically across several sites), I keep seeing a reference to someone's being in the barrel. Now, I know of one context for that locution, a sexual joke, but for the premise of an old, old joke to suddenly captivate dozens of posters on the Internet today -- and no other days in my recollection -- leads me to ask:

Is there some outburst or tweet I missed that started everyone using this phrase?

Or are we seeing David Brock's latest talking point being endlessly repeated with this reference?

The metaphor is "another spin in the barrel", where such a spin would be painful. I find the expression similar to being "put through the wringer", another body-mangling metaphor.

I saw this mentioned on DK today and this is the comment that went with it after the diarist posted Stone in one.

Good points. And what we need to remind any people we run across who try to push the “it’s all a witch hunt”, “Bob Mueller is just trying to ‘get Trump’ and making people tell lies” is that all the evidence and witnesses have been seen by people on a Grand Jury.

It’s not a bunch of LEO’s “going rogue” — it’s our justice system working exactly the way it’s supposed to.

Quite frankly, crooks like Manafort, Stone, Trump, should have been rounded up by LE years ago.
This is the start of justice well past due.

Next comment said that Mueller is going to need a bigger barrel. Then this one

Mueller has so many people over a barrel that Trump cannot get to the bottom to scrape it for new appointees.

If you can make sense of that let me know. If I find anything I'll let you know.

BTW. Anyone ever think that they would see this written there?

Mueller is doing both intentionally. It helps restore our trust in government.

Or this.

If you’re talking about Mueller, everyone who knows him seems pretty sure that he’s completely committed to the rule of law regardless of the party affiliation of the people he’s investigating. And his pattern so far of indictments backs that up. It’s not like he’s a Republican politician.

CNN aired video of the raid at Stone's Fort Lauderdale, Florida, home, showing agents in body armor using large weapons and night-vision equipment, running up to the home and banging on the door.

"FBI open the door!" one shouts. "FBI, warrant!" Stone could then be seen in the doorway in his sleepwear before he was led away.

Though not uncommon for the FBI to make early-morning arrests of targets under indictment, it's the first time Mueller has used that tactic. Stone had been predicting his indictment for some time.

I want Mueller and the FBI to justify this action. Stone is 72 years old not some young Rambo dude stocked to the gills with weapons. And why was CNN there to video the raid?

Utter bullshit!

Stone is the sixth Trump aide or adviser charged by Mueller and the 34th person overall. The nearly two-year-old probe has exposed multiple contacts between Trump associates and Russia during the campaign and transition period and revealed efforts by several to conceal those communications.

No one has been charged with aiding and abetting the Russians to collude with Trump to sway the election. Most have been charged with either lying under oath as in this case with Stone or for money laundering, not paying taxes and things not remotely related to this farcical Russia Gate.

Just more examples of how the truth is being stretched by Mueller and the organizations that have sprung up to show the real reasons behind this. And way too many people are just blithely going along with it instead of seeing the danger this represents to us.

Think about from an different angle. The Russians knew the Rust Belt was in play--Americans experts did not. Russians knew how to manipulate a child's character, Pokemon, to change adult vote--American operatives were clueless on this use. The Russians were better at messaging African Americans than Donna Brazile and the entire democratic party apparatus. The Russians non-political ads to change America votes using even the subject of teen mastrubation to brilliantly change adult votes--American election consultants were outtwitted by Russian manipulation of jacking off. The Russians were better at cyber security commpared to the brightest operatives of the democratic party. The Russians brilliant played on a theme of a gay Bernie to change votes--the democratic party who champion gay rights were beaten in their messaging to gays by trolls in Russia.
