wsws.org is putting this shit into the most depressing contexts, from harvey, maria, to the cavalier way states are ignoring those told to evacuate. what congress budgeted for hurricane relief is apparently one-third of the cost of the devastation in 2017, although how that was calculated is beyond my ken. i believe it was tom hall who brought in the economic injustices to it all, while hightower framed the current cavalier nature of gummints on the coast.

tough way to start the day, as being witnesses is important, but we can do little to help what's gonna go down for far, fr, too many of the poor and disabled, and those w/o power, food, water or medical care. ach, anyway read em and weep for them, for us, and rage at the capitalist overlords who don't give a fuck for us.

but the national guard will take care of things, yanno? looters will be shot on sight!

raw links are all i can manage right now.

but worse, imo, is that the Ruling Class commodifies the rabble class that has no political power. 'emergency evacuation!' (indemnification), but sorry...if ya ain't got the wherewithal to reach higher ground, 'sorry, no buses, no more ferrries'.

it may be grim news in the final tally, but i've been doing so many RL chores that i haven't even checked to see whassup on the coast, including tidal surges.

new developments in norway, i'd gone back to find the earliest wikileaks' worries, but hadn't gone back far enough. the norwegian paper in the center tweet had it, though, and fleshed out some of the history. family and friends seem...would freaked out cover it?

if you click it to make it stand alone, you can read more below, subtweets i think they're called.

SE Texas coast area for several years after we retired. We still follow the weather very closely even though we live in Santa Fe, NM.

For hurricanes and other biggies we like to read Jeff Masters et al.

https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/Florence-Cat-3-Wind-Field-Expands-Oliv...

Took sustaining about $10,000 damage (paid for by insurance) from Rita and the extra maintenance living there requires to convince us to move. That, and the fact that one has to make it through frigging obscenely overdeveloped Houston area to escape a storm. How did that gasping amoeba spread through the wetlands? Buying out politicians who passed developer friendly laws. Not limited to Houston of course.

Can barely wait to read Trump/RepubaDem thoughts and prayers wishes for any victims of this current potentially monster of a hurricane.

Heh.

weather underground, mr. wd's go-to place for weather; thank you. can't read it all now, but new to me was the ERC concept. 83 foot waves were measured from planes in the eye, according to wsws. looks as though forecasts are quite varied, but reading of 24-48 inches of rain boggles my mind, as we're in the most extreme drought imaginable here in the four corners. the entire mancos river has 3 feet of water in it, the conservancy district voted to take the reservoir down to 17% of capacity, against mr. wd's pleas. sure. it'll be a heavy snow winter, uh-huh... yeah, enough is left for household water next year, so...that's good enough. let's water the hay fields! that's why the reservoir was built!

i'll abstain from commenting on bill mckibben so as not to harsh yer mellow unduly, okay?

but yeah, i can see why you moved outta hurricane alley, but i gotta say that when we went thru houston we were appalled to no end by one of the most sincere Armpits of Amerikka. santa fe sure does have its charms, though. we lived very briefly in truchas long ago, hightailed it back to coloraddy after some crazy scary experiences.

Our greatest concern is rainfall. I live in the county which has the highest rainfall outside the Pacific NW. We have had a great amount of rainfall this year and the ground is saturated. So not only is flooding a concern, but the falling of trees. Otherwise we are okay, only inconvenienced if we lose power.

tarheel dem lives in durham, north central NC i just saw on a map. saturated ground already: ooooof. how close to the blue ridge are you, and if close, are mudslides a danger as well? how much rainfall is forecast for your area, gulf gal?

you stay safe; i know we'll all be sending good thoughts and prayers (even if apatheit ones) your way.

@wendy davis We're in the southern Apalachians. I am in town and only a few miles away from the Blue Ridge Parkway. This county is known as the land of waterfalls with close to 250 named waterfalls, some of which are very spectacular. The western part of the county averages over 90 inches of rainfall per year. In town in the eastern part of the county we average around 70 inches per year, but a couple of years ago we went over 100 inches of rain. It is a rain forest climate here but different from the Pacific NW. We get a lot of rain, but not the depressing day after day of grey skies like I understand they do in the PNW.

it pours, but the sun shines between times. so many waterfalls it's hard to imagine; so much rain is impossible to fathom, esp. given that our yearly precipitation is about 18 inches. but living the the pacific NW w/ so many cloudy days would be more than i could withstand before depression would come knockin' at my door. escaped ohio constantly overcast weather at age 17 for sunny colorado.

falling trees though, are no small matter, esp. when they fall on houses and power lines. hope your electrical crews show up when needed, although long waits are pretty standard these days.

best thoughts to you and yours,
wd
