On Friday the Sunspot Observatory was closed due to security issue

SUNSPOT, NM – The Sunspot Observatory is temporarily closed due to a security issue at the facility that’s located 17 miles south of Cloudcroft in the Sacramento Mountains Friday, an Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) spokeswoman Shari Lifson said.

“The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy who manages the facility is addressing a security issue at this time,” Lifson said. “We have decided to vacate the facility at this time as precautionary measure. It was our decision to evacuate the facility.”

She said she cannot comment on whether the FBI was involved in the situation.

Otero County Sheriff Benny House said the Otero County Sheriff’s Office was asked to standby.

“The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on,” House said. “We’ve got people up there (at Sunspot) that requested us to standby while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why. The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say.”

National Solar Observatory, USPS office in Sunspot, NM evacuated for 'safety reasons'

I was thinking maybe Mercury was involved. Is Mercury used in the mirrors in these things? Could someone have broken something and contaminated the area? But why the FBI and all the secrecy? My curiosity factor is growing and I feel like maybe I should get out the

@ovals49 There would be no mercury and no nuclear power at a sunspot observatory. This is very strange. The only thing that is not unusual is the opacity of the FBI.

NMSU saves Sunspot

The Sacramento Peak Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, was built by the U.S. Air Force in 1947 after the military realized the sun was affecting their communications during World War II. In 1950, they built the observatory's first telescope dome – the Grain Bin Dome. The observatory ordered the grain bin from a Sears catalog and modified it for use as a telescope dome.

McAteer said the military still had a presence at the Observatory until 2010 when the Air Force moved the rest of their operations back to Kirkland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. They used the Evans Solar Facility to look at the corona, the faint outermost layer of the sun. McAteer explained that a disk was used to block off the bright disk of the Sun and simulate an eclipse, so corona could be studied.

The observatory also houses the Dunn Solar Telescope, a towering structure that is 136 feet tall and has another 228 feet of building below ground. The structure contains an entrance window and two mirrors that guide sunlight down the tower in an evacuated tube from which the air has been removed. Inside, the rotating telescope weighs 200 tons and is suspended from a right-shaped container holding 10 tons of mercury. With this telescope, scientists are able to study granulation, sunspots, faculae, weak magnetic field, filaments and solar flares.

I kept finding references to mercury and I was wondering if there could be a MASSIVE mercury problem. But I have never personally been inside an observatory so I have no clue. This article is about the best of the lot that I’ve found that mentions mercury. Ten tons of it no less. And I wonder what’s up with the FBI?

I know how we used to pick up mercury when we were kids (it’s a wonder any of us survived past kindergarten). How big a ball would 10 tons of the stuff be, I wonder?
