Why do some people believe that Russia Gate is real while others can see that it's a hoax?
Caitlin explains why people who used to be against war are now happy about a possible one with Russia. She uses this video as an explanation for why some are dead certain that Russia interfered with the election even though it's an outlandish claim to many others.
"This is because people aren’t thinking. They are following."
Bingo! Anyone who doesn't buy into Russia Gate will be kicked off the island after being ridiculed and flagged of course and people like to feel like they belong to the cool kids group. Plus they believed Hillary was the most qualified candidate to run for president whilst ignoring her many flaws?
Why didn't Russia interfere with our elections before the last one? Are we supposed to believe that they did it just to keep Hillary out of the White House because Putin was scared of her? Why have people forgotten what Obama said about how safe our elections are? Why are people suddenly thinking that the FBI is telling them the truth this time after they have lied to us for so long? Mueller indicted 13 ham sandwiches Russians and 3 Russian companies that placed ads on Facebook (most were placed after the election) and they see that as proof that Russia did the deed, while we laughed at it. Plus there's the number of people who Mueller has charged for things that have nothing to do with election interference.
Another question is why were those of us who got kicked off the daily kos island because we knew that she was a bad choice for president because of her warmongering way, her pay to play and the other problems we had with her not buying into Russia Gate?
And why are the Russia Gaters so sure that Assad used chemical weapons on his own people while most of us here are seeing that this is the new WMDs scam?
This 5 minute video shows how easy it is to get people to conform with others.
Every few minutes a bell was rung, at which time all the actors would stand up for no discernible reason and then sit back down. The real patient was confused by this behavior at first, but by the third bell she was standing and sitting in unison with the rest of the herd.

And now we have groups that have a historical tradition of opposing the agendas of the US-centralized war machine actively cheerleading for escalations against Russia and regime change in Syria. Trump’s hawkish maneuvers against Russia, already far in excess of any ever undertaken by Obama, are being condemned by Democratic party leaders as grossly inadequate. Even some proper leftists who claim to oppose the predatory capitalism of the neocon centrists are now actively cheerleading for the longstanding CIA agenda of regime change in Syria. The obvious reality has been obscured that US military interventionism in the modern world is literally always disastrous, literally never helpful, literally always extremely profitable for military-industrial complex plutocrats, and literally always based on lies.

Off topic, but this is an interesting development
This might throw Russia Gate off the daily insanity that passes for news these days. This could be huge if it goes anywhere. The FBI investigating and wiretapping Trump during the election should be what the media is covering, not the faltering Russia Gate. But so far no main stream media has said anything about it.
On the Criminal Referral of Comey, Clinton et al: Will the Constitution Hold and the Media Continue to Suppress the Story?
But She Lost
And that is what makes this so important. We know that if she had won then all of this would have been swept under the rug and no one would have heard that she, the DNC and the FBI wiretapped her political opponent during the election to get dirt on Trump. For some reason this is different than what Trump Jr did when he met with the Russian lawyer who the FBI helped get a passport because she couldn't get one on her own.

Good basic report. Clear and concise.
Propaganda, that's the biggest thing.
Not necessarily following the herd. I've seen people on here state that they think Assad probably did do the dirty deed. That can only come from the information they've digested.
I'm wondering who Johnstone is referring to with this:
"groups that have a historical tradition of opposing the agendas of the US-centralized war machine actively cheerleading for escalations against Russia and regime change in Syria."
If she's talking about the democratic party, she's off base and giving far too much credit.

Snoopy elucidated the answer as to switching Russiagate views
This is a description of a psychological experiment in which a subject is somehow convinced to stand up every time a bell was rung, simply because all the "plants" were doing it. Herd behavior? Yes. Perhaps the incentive here is a need to belong to a group, even if the group activity makes no sense.

Does this stupid woman even realize what she is doing?
NOTE: Arwa Damon is the granddaughter of Muhsin al-Barazi who was involved in the CIA orchestrated coup against the democratically elected government of Syria in March 1949. He was then tasked with secret negotiations with Israel. In August 1949 he was executed along with the other coup leaders in a counter coup by the Syrian military.
It appears the attempted take-down of Syria is a family affair and CNN is still on the CIA's payroll.
Can we get an Ambassador's daughter to tearfully confirm
Assad's use of CW? That will get Americans on board for more war.

So if you believe that Putin and his operatives interfered in our election and hold a hammer over Donald Trump's head then that means you are a warmonger and want war with Russia? News to me.

Nobody thinks that.
Millions of people who fell for this hoax want no part of any war.
They are exhibiting a state of general distress and insecurity. This suppresses their defenses and shakes their trust in themselves and their reality map. It was known in advance that the stressors of forced globalism were bound to cause such pressures in the population. The constant stress and uncertainty and sense of personal failure have made this population mentally vulnerable. They are seeking something real and tangible that can be identified as the cause of their free-floating anxieties. If they can identify a real cause for their distress, then they can externalize their feelings and perhaps act to resolve this discomfort.
Who can blame them? The concurrent epidemic of suicides and drug overdoses have been predicted and expected. The focus on "Communist Russia" — their old enemy — has offered great comfort and relief to the particular demographic that was most affected by the profound anxieties of social change.
Our leaders are very good at this type of social engineering and have had a lot of practice. They understand the risks and manage them toward the best possible economic outcome. Eventually, the fear will pass and hopefully leave the generations that follow unmarked by the misfortune.

I can only add that this latest fraud has its foundation in a deeply conformist society made so by similar forces.

btw, our military has always communicated with Russia in Syria when we are doing airstrikes to make sure that our bombs don't hit Russian assets. Russia made it very clear that if their assets were hit then they would have responded by bombing the ships that sent the missiles.
Trump did want to hit Russian assets initially, but Mattis and others in the military talked him out of doing that because of the risks. I think that was the right call.

Excellent essay, snoopy!
I find it very interesting that those who scream the loudest about the so called "Russian interference" in our elections are the very same ones who interfered in the Democratic primaries. It is obvious that something was wrong in the Democratic primaries when exit polls varied widely from the official results while the exit polls were consistent in the Republican primaries. Exit polling is considered very reliable as an indicator of election fraud if the variance is greater than 2%.
If they (the Corporate Democrats) are so worried about "interference" then perhaps they should be supporting conducting all elections using paper ballots that are hand counted in public. The electronic voting machines used in many parts of the United States have been banned in many other countries including Europe.

We've long had the technology for fair elections.
Hand counting, as you suggest, in every precinct, while streaming close-up video of the counting that all interested Americans can watch in real time — would true the vote.
If there is resistance, Federal elections can safely be separated from state elections. (Presumably, some states might want to continue the secret counting of in-state elections for their own purposes.)

Good Question
I initially assumed it was mostly Hillary supporters who had bought into the Russia narrative and dismissed it as a continuation of their political derangement syndrome. But then Bernie fell in line with the Russia narrative bringing his followers along as the establishment hoped he would, so I had to rule out that assumption.
Social conformity? It's a good enough theory as anything else out there and may explain why most of us who exiled from the insane asylum over at TOP did not fall in line with Bernie's Russia narrative. Of course, I'd like to chalk that up to discerning thinking on our part but wonder if it's more a product of a lot square pegs who were never very good at conforming and falling in line.
Thankfully we were lucky enough to find kindred souls over here to commiserate with as the world goes mad. Otherwise it'd be pretty lonely in reality land.

dfarrah
I was actually referring to the Bernie
Supporters who went along with Bernie when he said that the Russians were behind the rigging of the 2016 election. However, I'll quote CStMS who answered a similar question up thread:
I'm sure there are Bernie supporters who do not want to go to war with Syria. As I'm sure there are supporters who believe Russia rigged the 2016 election and that they were also behind the chemical attacks in the UK. People are unpredictable like that.

It was said I was a Russian who could write better English than the average mole.
Putin had me inserted into DKos at the beginning of Obama's presidency so I would be prepared to take down Her Heinous when it became her turn to be crowned. He already knew back then the 2018 cage match would be The Trumper vs The Killary.
I was very successful because DKos was too late in discovering me. I managed to knacker and get the Trumpeter elected (with the help of all the other Russian moles we had there).
After getting tossed, I had to go back to Russia for a few months to get deloused.
When I got back to the Fatherland, Putin awarded me the Order of St. Catherine the Great Martyr

That's the thing
Anyone who doesn't believe in Russia Gate are called Russian bots, Putin's puppet or other derogatory names. There is no room for questioning or dissent of the narrative there.
After Trump's bombing of Syria, people there were upset that he only hit empty buildings or that Putin told Trump what he could bomb.
There has been a hotline between us and Russia whenever we're doing a military action, or vice versa. But it's being sold as Trump couldn't do anything unless his BFF said that he could. Hence my comment above. If we had hit any Russian assets in Syria from one of our ships, there's a good chance that Russia would have retaliated against it. But for some reason people think that shouldn't be discussed.
BTW, we are being accused of being Russian bots. What makes Russia Gate all the more sillier is that the things that happened years ago are being blamed on Russia. Hence the accusation against you being one because you were critical of Obama's policies. Sigh!
You mean everyone here at C99?
Does this mean we won't be getting any visitors from TOP trying to proselytize us as the 2020 election gets closer with essays entitled, "Kamala is not the enemy"?

Ayup, Zoe
I often see comments saying that their place is much nicer and quieter since people like us left it. It's because we were critical of Obama's policies and of democrats in general. Anyone who criticizes what they are doing get Dawg piled on and told to stfu because there's an election coming up. Isn't that what they always say? "There is no room for criticism now because we have to win the election."
You can't even criticize the blue dawgs because they give the democrats the majority. After a lot of them voted to deregulate the banks and people were pissed off about it, those who said something derogatory about them were flagged. Flags fly easily over there.

This is my question, ctts
They refused to fall for the WMDs scam, but since Obama became president the anti war people went dark. No one could question his use of drones, his restarting the Iraq war and especially his invasion of Libya.
Now they don't even question why Assad would have used chemical weapons right after Trump said that he wanted to pull the troops out of Syria.
There was a diary today on how Putin told Trump what he could bomb. This is what my comment up thread was about. Of course we called Russia before we bombed Syria. If we had hit them Putin's response would not have been good.. but why they can't see that is beyond me.
That's because Obama was the Dems wet dream
Of a President. He had the perfect image to project to the world. Smart, urbane, diverse. And he was a democrat.
What he and Hillary Clinton managed to do in 8 years was turn the entire face of Democratic Party into war Hawks. The partisan hacks and believers just fell in line.
There is always Music amongst the trees in the Garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it. ~ Minnie Aumonier
That was Obama's job
To kill the anti war movement, the want of universal health care, and the reversal of the Bush administration's policies. The Bush tax cuts became permanent. The patriot act and the military commissions acts were extended. The 4th amendment was nullified after illegal spying became legal after the FISA bill was passed. Just to name a few items that Obama's legacy contains.
Here's a more comprehensive list of what he did during his tenure.
Among other things, president Barack Obama:
Dropped bombs in 7 countries (all predominantly Muslim).
Sent 3,500 U.S. troops and tanks to Russia's doorstep in one of his final decisions as president.
Ordered ten times more drone strikes than Bush.
Dropped 26,171 bombs in 2016 alone (an average of 72 bombs every day).
Put boots on the ground in Syria , despite 16 times saying "no boots on the ground".
Despite campaign pledges, planned a $1 trillion progam to add more nuclear weapons to the US arsenal in the next 30 years.
Said, “I believe in American exceptionalism with every fiber of my being.”
Bragged about his use of drones - I'm "really good at killing people".
Deported a modern-record 2 million immigrants.
Signed the Monsanto Protection Act into law.
Started a new war in Iraq .
Initiated, and personally oversaw a 'Secret Kill List'.
Pushed for war on Syria while siding with al-Qaeda .
Backed neo-Nazis in Ukraine.
Supported Israel's wars and occupation of Palestine.
Deployed Special Ops to 134 countries - compared to 60 under Bush.
Did a TV commercial promoting "clean coal".
Drastically escalated the NSA spying program .
Signed the NDAA into law - making it legal to assassinate Americans w/o charge or trial.
Given Bush absolute immunity for everything.
Pushed for a TPP Trade Pact .
Started a new war on terror - this one on ISIS .
Signed more executive memoranda than any other president in history.
Transferred more than $100 billion in arms sales to Saudi Arabia, more than any other administration in history.
Signed an agreement for 7 military bases in Colombia .
Opened a military base in Chile.
Touted nuclear power , even after the disaster in Japan.
Opened up deepwater oil drilling, even after the BP disaster.
Mandated the Insider Threat Program which orders federal employees to report suspicious actions of their colleagues.
Defended body scans and pat-downs at airports.
Signed the Patriot Act extension into law.
Launched 20,000 Airstrikes in his first term.
Continued Bush's rendition program.
Said the U.S. is the "one indispensable nation" in the world.
Waged war on Libya without congressional approval.
Started a covert, drone war in Yemen.
Escalated the proxy war in Somalia.
Escalated the CIA drone war in Pakistan.
Sharply escalated the war in Afghanistan.
Repealed the Propaganda ban, making it legal to spread government propaganda via news outlets.
Assassinated 4 US citizens with drone strikes.
But wait, there's more:
The Obama Legacy
Hillary's job then was to continue what he wasn't able to do.
sigh
I'd like to add one more
He signed away American citizens right to habeas corpus.
When I tell that to people most don't believe me.
Sigh.
There is always Music amongst the trees in the Garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it. ~ Minnie Aumonier
Yes, that is one of my biggest complaints about him
He signed an NDAA that allows the military to arrest American citizens and hold them indefinitely without charges, access to a lawyer or a trial. This is just one of the constitutional lawyer's legacy!
The list of the damage that he did to this country is staggering! And what makes it worse is how high his approval rating still is.
The Empty Suit president did the exact opposite of the things that he said he would do and that is why his place as one of the worst presidents in history will be right around Hoover's. The one difference is that there are no Hoovervilles, just endless amounts of homeless camps.
Depends on who writes
The history books. I can totally imagine a re-telling of his presidency where he'll be holographed as the first Black President and the rest will be either whitewashed or omitted entirely.
Sigh.
