while i do understand that russia/putin advertised their more superior weapons, it's also an existential for them, what with nato nations, friends of nato, under nato's umbrella, poland, latvia, more baltic nations, surrounding them, and boatloads of US nukes stationed in the EU, so...i kinda get it, myownself, even if i don't particularly like it.
Not actually a threat, but an intended deterrent -
that being the intended purpose of nukes. The principle of MAD was, of course, supposed to initiate at least a Mexican Stand-off, so that more-powerful and heavily-militarized countries with psychopaths and greed-heads at the helm couldn't do to countries having nukes what the US PTB were and are doing to any country not having nukes as it systematically 'destabilizes' its way around the globe, via such as pet terrorists, internationally illegal and grossly immoral illegal military attacks, invasions, 'regime changes' to suit TPTB, in the interests of totalitarian global domination.
Unfortunately, psychopathic bullies are stupid and the gang's all in on forcing WW3, in the belief that they can force everyone to crawl under their thumb so as to be squished as painfully as possible.
But Hitler was beaten the last time, when this was also thought impossible - in great part because the Russian people are known for fighting to the last man and have never been subjugated by invaders as a result.
And the 'this can't happen in my democracy' German people were also freed by Hitler's defeat.
Domestically, this is essentially a case of the lawless infiltrating and taking over legislative and judicial branches of government over the years in order to create their own 'law' in order to 'justify' ('optics' for the win!) whatever they do - and using this unconstitutional law against their own law-abiding people. Psychologically, (as well as financially) it seems to be harder for us law-abiding people to stand up en masse to pacifically fight those forcing the imposition of unjust and destructive law than even the militarized police forces who are supposed to be working for the people.
What they've been doing in occupying other people's 'geopolitically important' countries so as to further expand the net of military bases around the globe for the ability to attack anywhere, any time, cannot any longer go unnoticed.

What I think about every time I hear anyone
In our government piss and moan about chemical weapons is White Phosphorus and Fallujah.
And we still got run out of there.

We've been lied to since kindergarten, subtly but pervasively. The lying has never ceased. The only hopeful sign is that more people are learning this.

We just happened to have all of these
battle-ships, war-planes and subs from multiple countries all massing just off Syria - and they wrecked everything by sinking them all, just because we started sending off our beautiful missiles at them! How dare they defend themselves against exceptional us?
We aren't supposed to get shot back at in an illegal military attack based on false pretenses which we like to term WAR! These guys are evil! Usually, it's a ginormous military mugging of vulnerable, poor countries without air defenses, where we get to kill lots of civilians and call them terrorists... maybe we'd better stick to those? Keep starving some of those excess children, maybe that's easier...
