No, there hasn't been 18 school shootings.

I'm sure you've all heard the statistic. I was naturally skeptical of anything in the Washington Post but in this case the claims are undisputed and easily verifiable.

The stunning number swept across the Internet within minutes of the news Wednesday that, yet again, another young man with another semiautomatic rifle had rampaged through a school, this time at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in South Florida.

The figure originated with Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit group, co-founded by Michael Bloomberg, that works to prevent gun violence and is most famous for its running tally of school shootings.

“This,” the organization tweeted at 4:22 p.m. Wednesday, “is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.”

...

It is a horrifying statistic. And it is wrong.
WaPo: No, there haven’t been 18 school shootings in 2018. That number is flat wrong.

Just as a teaser, here's one example of a "school shooting" as defined by Everytown:

Take, for example, what it counted as the year’s first: On the afternoon of Jan. 3, a 31-year-old man who had parked outside a Michigan elementary school called police to say he was armed and suicidal. Several hours later, he killed himself. The school, however, had been closed for seven months. There were no teachers. There were no students.

They list quite a few other examples that are absolutely not what I call a "school shooting". Some other examples, however, were not so clear to me (nor did the article portray them as clear). It was interesting that there's some real ambiguity in what is and is not a school shooting... at least in my own head. But what is abundantly clear is that 18 is, in fact, a greatly exaggerated number.

If you want much more credible gun statistics, the article referenced a site I'd already come across, Gun Violence Archive. I suspect that site under-counts but not out of spin. They just verify everything and so I suspect that some incidents don't get reported and/or are unverifiable. But they seem to at least try to get the facts right. As the WaPo article notes, it's not like you need to exaggerate the numbers to make them horrifying.

Among all the wealthy nations, 91% of all children under the age of 15 who were killed by a bullet live in the United States.

That is sufficiently horrifying to me.

If you can't get to the WaPo article, an icognito window in your browser gets around it (Thanks Caitlin Johnstone).

This fact alone is mind-numbing ...

It's hard to cite a definitive number, because the federal government does not study gun violence in the United States.

Edited to add quotation marks.

Luxembourg has a per capita GDP of $95000? I knew it was a gated community masquerading as a country, but that's astonishing.

Gotta spin it one way or the other. They always holler gun control from one side and mental health from the other...a never do a damn thing except count bodies.

It is all another symptom of this capitalist system run amok - no matter how you count the deaths and bodies. No one seems to ask - what are we doing to our kids? ...and on we go.

They just added $160 Billion to the defense budget so we can Carpet Bomb The Brown People Countries.

If only they could do something about these mass shootings performed with military assault rifles which are easier to buy than candy. But alas, there is nothing that can be done.

Now go Show Your Patriotism by buying a gun from an American Gun company.

Gun shops have been doing this kind of shit for years after mass shootings.

Because, you know, 2nd amendment. Or (Insert Democrat Here) is gonna take your gun and your bible. Or false flag. Or because "communism". Funnily enough, communist leaders actually kept their populations well armed and trained, not that the average Fundie'Murican would know that.

I don't care if 18 is right or not, and arguing about it just gives some people justification for not doing anything. And I don't care if it "undermines the argument by using hyperbolic stats" or some such BS. Those who who point to that stat as a reason not to do anything, never WERE going to do anything.
I'm tired of students and staff dying in a place that should be safe. I'm horrified that we are raising a generation of kids who think it is normal to have to practice what to do if there is a shooter.
I had someone try to downplay the stats by stating that they don't really count unless it is a mass shooting, that it isn't really a tragedy if less than 4 people die.
F%^k that noise.
One is too many.

@Teiresias70

It seems like keeping track of MSM spin is 3/4 of what we do here. That is to be expected in a "reality based community" that is actually based in reality. I think reality matters.

Nor do I agree with zero tolerance for anything... including school mass shootings. The price tag is always way too high for that. I'd settle for, "We need to make a serious effort at minimizing such things so that we get them down to levels in other, less barbaric nations." Of course right now I'm in the "wants an armed populace" camp so I'm not sure I'd vote for ANY gun regulations in the present moment.

A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.
