Florida Meetups!

This is to announce the first of what I hope will be several Florida C99 Meetups.

First Florida C99 Meetup:

Saturday, February 17, 1:00 P.M.
The Dixie Crossroads Seafood Restaurant in Titusville
1475 Garden Street Titusville, FL 32796
Phone: 321-268-5000

There are so many Florida folks here on C99 that it seems a shame for us not to know each other face to face. Plus, there are so many great places to go in this state!

However, our state is very long. Those from away may not understand exactly how long it can take to get places.

From Tallahassee to Miami (which doesn't even include out Pensacola way) it is a whopping 483 miles. It takes at least seven hours to make that drive (perhaps that's why North Florida and South Florida don't talk to each other much, though there are other reasons) It's certainly why I haven't been to Miami since I was a teenager. Frankly, Atlanta feels closer and more accessible.

That's why the title of this is Florida Meetups--plural. I sent messages out to various Florida C99ers to figure out where might be most convenient to get the most people. So far, the most people want to meet on the Space Coast (Cape Canaveral, Merritt Island, Titusville):

I looked around for a decent, maybe even cool, restaurant to meet at. I came up with the following:

Saturday, February 17, 1:00 P.M.
The Dixie Crossroads Seafood Restaurant in Titusville
1475 Garden Street Titusville, FL 32796
Phone: 321-268-5000

If anybody wants to meet up in the Tampa/St. Pete area--my old home town:

--I'd really love to go to Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish (it's famous for a reason). But I know not everybody likes smoked fish. So how about Crabby Bill's--a place that's apparently been there forever, but which I somehow managed to not hear about till now?

crabby3.jpg

Crabby Bill's St Pete Beach
5100 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach, FL 33706
Phone: +1-727-360-8858

If anybody's up for a weekend lunch at Crabby Bill's--or anywhere else in the St. Pete Beach area--please let me know!

If you can't make it to either Titusville or St. Pete Beach, please give me feedback in the comments as to where it would be convenient for you to meet.

Came back from vacation and promptly got sick. Maybe it was too many hours in the cold preparing the yard for the big freeze (yes, I know that cold temperatures don't give you viruses, but stressing the body can let a virus already present get you sick).

Anyway, I will be in and out of this diary today. If you want to come to Titusville, please leave a comment saying so--if the numbers get big enough, I'll make a reservation.

Hope to hear from you all soon!

I hope to be there to meet a bunch other 99%'ers.

I lived in Florida my entire life, having grown up in St. Pete and can attest to how big our state is. I have only been through Miami once, never been to Titusville, and been to Pensacola once too. People from other states think it is strange how many of us who live in the north or central parts of the state rarely go to the southern part. It is a very long drive to get there. And if you want to drive even more, try visiting Key West, which everyone should do at least once in their lives. Key West is a country unto itself, ie, the Conch Republic.

I am looking forward to this meetup.

BTW, I have been down with the flu for over a week now. This version is really nasty.

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

Figured I would let you know. I'm in on Titusville. Actually either location is geographically in the center of this state (on the coast). I've eaten at both places. I ate at the Crabby Bill's in Indian Rocks Beach. Very good food. You get your flu shot? I have to with my internal disability. Right in time, too. Smile Please get better. Take care! Rec'd!!

but realized it falls on my partner's bday.

If the next one is a little more North I'd look into coordinating a flight down to visit my parents near Jax.

Hope it comes together and a nice crew of you all get to have a great time in person. Smoked fish and beignets- man, that sounds good!

I'm sitting here feeling inspired to get the NYC one together, before my partner goes back to work after maternal leave in early April.
Some time in March maybe.

Talk soon.

Ais people used to live where is Titusville, but all of them were killed by the white people. The town was named after Henry Titus, who invaded Cuba, went 1200px-Dusky_Seaside_Sparrow.jpg to Kansas to kill the people who did not believe in slavery, invaded Nicaragua, and sold supplies and slave labor to the Confederacy so there could be more killing to keep the slavery. Naturally, he then became a judge. The town is today a white-people preserve—83% melanin-impaired. Sometimes the white people need to spray-paint KKK on the buildings. The dusky seaside sparrow used to live around there, but then the people at the space center started whining about the mosquitoes, and so came the flooding, and the draining, and the DDT, and now the birds are extinct. I used to write about the last living bird, named by the humans "Orange Band," until he died; that is why I know these things. He lived his final days at Disney World. Like Ishi in the museum.

@hecate
George Plimpton once fired off one of his maniac "fireworks" bombs, out at the cape, that shattered some 700 windows in Titusville. But that won't be a problem for your meetup, because Plimpton is now in the boneyard.

Best if Aspie can come up and pick me up. I'll pay all gas, tolls, and dinner.(Seems like incentive enough.)

Then I can post another 'Peruvin Beach Shack Report'(TM - No rights reserved) - 'Out of the sick bed and into Titusville' edition.

@Arrow It was originally Aspie's idea to do it in Titusville. Haven't heard from him in a little while, though.

Arrow, PM me and we'll see about trying to arrange a ride for you. I'm already picking up orlbucfan but maybe I can get you too, depending on where you are.
