A little National Anthem "re-education" in Bisbee

Congresswoman Martha McSally came to Bisbee for the local stair climb race, to make sure we knew the proper way to behave during the national anthem. Chaos ensued.

“Peace Train” as an antidote to “rockets’ red glare”? That congress member took far too much delight in that phrase.

What the hell was with the woman in the blue coat at the end? You have a respectful filming of the entire scene, including the participants of this public production, and at the end, she literally assaults the camera operator, uttering nonsense, "Stop assaulting me with the camera!" WTF?

Bizarre.

I do not care if she was the founder of this race, she should be charged with physically assaulting the person with the camera. This was a public event taking place on public property. The person filming this event had just as much right to be there and to film it as everyone else, including Ms. Conroy. Ms Conroy had no right to shove the camera (or cell phone) into the filmer's face like she did. And it was totally unnecessary. The force she used was enough that it could have physically harmed the person filming.

I love Alice! Like her, I am so sick of war. Our Peace vigil was very geriatric with everyone except me being in their late seventies or older. Our oldest member retired at the age of 92. Sadly, two years ago, our members all got too old to continue.

I guess that it is appropriate that our national anthem celebrates war. I never liked it for that reason.

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy

@gulfgal98
but that's what I'm still trying to grasp...what was her motivation? From an outside perspective, the camera was simply filming the entire proceeding, including the lone woman with the flag, AND the singing of the anthem; just documenting the entire proceeding.

To then assault the person with the camera, I liken it to kicking the household pet, out of frustration, when a person comes home from a bad day at work; taking it out on an unrelated, third party, that had nothing to do with the source of the anger and frustration.

That woman has issues.

@Steven D @Steven D
even a thought. Hence no "exit strategy."
But at least enough time has passed where 74 year olds are saying enough is enough.
Or one 74 yr. old, at least. God bless her for standing her ground!
And, it's kinda like that Cronkite moment when he won over "middle America."
When it wasn't just the hippies and college kids ragging on the war,
but when middle America said enough is enough. When even Nixon knew
"when we've lost Cronkite we've lost the war."
Not that that matters in 2017. The Oligarchy couldn't care less if we've "lost" or not,
or whether or not anyone still supports it. They're going to continue to fight our "endless war" regardless. Becuz it ain't about winning, it's all about feeding the MIC and reducing the numbers of people of color on the planet. So, continuation is a win win for them.
Still, though, a meaningful effort on the part of the 74 year old.

I put the video on facebook.

is there any way we in c99 can push this ?
it should go viral.
also Alice could be a big resource in propaganda battle.
would she do interviews,etc?

I don't see what else to do but sit down in the streets.
apparently Hedges has talked about this. he is worth a listen.

it all starts with the war. stop the war machine & life can begin.
this is the error of sanders. you can not build a just society on the mass murder of millions.

we must have a face, someone to say no to the killing now.

edit. I sent a copy of video over to Jimmie Dore as message . who knows?

or was that comment snark?

Personally, I wish these people would quit trying to disrupt non-partisan events, whatever their cause may be.

Get your own venue, or set up a table if allowed at an event or nearby, go to the congressperson's office, or attend one of the congressperson's public meetings, etc.

seems to be the question.

the lady is reacting to the organizers' insistence on singing the national anthem
prior to the race. also the lady singing is an az politician.

to me that is a political intrusion into what should be a fun event.
so I have to side with Alice on this one.

I wish they would stop doing it entirely.

@irishking something so banal, the ritual singing of the national anthem at any number of events, has been so politicized.

You write as if you know that the woman's opposition was spontaneous. I thought it was planned.

I was at an accounting conference and the sponsors had the 1st lady of Denver sing the national anthem (before all the ruckus about the national anthem). The sponsors were very unlikely to be dems, yet they invited the dem wife of the dem mayor to sing. She is considered to be a very good singer.

I suppose, since Denver is a sanctuary city, some anti-immigrant activists should have shown up an disrupted the proceedings.

IMO, these types of actions are nothing more than a distraction of questionable effectiveness.

@dfarrah

likely a big deal was made of the singing Ms. McSally appearance.

I agree that the whole thing has been politicized, but the right has done that.
there is a very clear effort to force people to cheer the military which has been tied up with this anthem business.

the anthem was not played at every opportunity in past.
this is a new thing.

I heard the anthem played before a high school badminton game.
there is a lot of pressure now to stand up and salute with all the other good people.

I have had it. There is a propaganda war going on in the country, and this is part of it. imo

best venue. But the old lady prolly lives nearby, and maybe thought it was her best chance to toe the line, let people know that she's had it up to her eyebrows with the war and isn't going to take it anymore.

Thing is, what other country sings their anthem and drags out their flag to be saluted at so many events? And makes such a big conformist deal out of it? Probably not being done to that extent most places because it's not about love of country, which lives within you and doesn't need to be displayed.

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

http://biblehub.com/matthew/6-6.htm

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

I expect that we all remember that fascist-style flagwaving and the sort of competitive 'patriotism' the Bush Admin/religious right fanatics brought in the first time Dick Cheney was obviously and directly involved in government, with all involved busily flag-pinning all and sundry to death.

That kind of thing places an emphasis on an unthinking religious-style worship of 'My country, right or wrong", rather than the dreaded, "We need to right what's wrong with our country".

Lol, this has been sitting here all week after I went to another page...but I guess I'll post it anyway, onto a dead thread....

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
