Mueller Investigation of Trump Advisors involves Pro-Russian Ukrainian Org. That Hired John Podesta's Firm to Lobby Hillary's State Department

Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller has subpoenaed lobbying firms that were involved with Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn regarding their work for a Ukrainian Pro-Russian think tank, the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, between 2012-2014. What you may not know is that the Podesta Group was also hired by the same organization to lobby the State Department while Hillary was Sec'y of State during the that time period.

As you may recall, Paul Manafort resigned as Chairman of Trump's campaign last August amid allegations regarding "his past lobbying work for pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarchs ..." The Hill later reported that Manafort had four meetings with various Republican lawmakers between December 2012 and April 2013, all in connection with work by a lobbying firm, Mercury Public Affairs, on behalf of the Brussels based European Centre for a Modern Ukraine.

Yesterday, Special Prosecutor Meuller issued subpoenas to executives of Mercury and another lobbying group, SGR LLC,demanding the firms "answer questions and provide records regarding their interactions with the consulting firms led by Michael Flynn, a former national security adviser to President Donald Trump, and Paul Manafort, former chairman of the Trump presidential campaign..."

What major media outlets, especially cable news outlets have not discussed, however, is that the Podesta Group, the lobbying firm founded and operated by John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's Campaign Chair, and his brother Tony Podesta, was also hired by the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine to lobby the Obama administration, including lobbying Hillary Clinton's State Department and Vice President Joe Biden during the years 2012-2014, work that was not disclosed by the Podesta Group at that time.

One of Washington's most powerful lobbying firms did not disclose the wide extent of its lucrative political work for a Ukrainian group tied to both onetime Trump adviser Paul Manafort and to pro-Russian politicians, new records show.

The firm, the Podesta Group, said nothing in a 2012 lobbying report to Congress about at least 32 meetings, emails and other communications it had with the State Department, at a time when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was scrutinizing Ukraine's upcoming election, records show. [...]

The Podesta Group was representing a Ukrainian nonprofit, the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, as it sought to counter the Obama administration's critical stance toward Ukraine's pro-Russia government and Congress' growing annoyance with Ukraine's leaders.

In addition to its undisclosed contacts with the State Department, the Podesta Group did not disclose some contacts it had between 2012 and 2014 with Vice President Joe Biden's office, the National Security Council and Congressional offices, the records show.

The lobbying by the Podesta Group for the very same Pro-Russian Ukrainian organization that is at the heart of Mueller's investigation of Manafort and Flynn, was only recently revealed. The Podesta Group's "Amendment to Registration Statement Pursuant to the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938," dated as received by the US Department of Justice's NSD/FARA registration unit on April 12, 2017, finally disclosed its lobbying work for the Eurpoean Centre for a Modern Ukraine. Unfortunately, this disclosure came roughly three years after the Podestas numerous contacts with Obama administration officials in the State Department, the National Security Council and the Office of the Vice President. It is also important to note that the Podesta Group's efforts were far more extensive than what we know regarding the lobbying work by Manafort and Flynn for the very same organization:

In the two weeks before and after Ukraine's election, the firm had near-daily contact with the State Department, holding seven meetings, conducting "outreach" on seven days and having conversations or email exchanges on 11 days, including with top department officials. The Podesta Group also had contact with the National Security Council on seven days in that same period.

"They were pretty open about their purpose being to give a positive perspective on the upcoming election," said a former State Department employee whom the Podesta Group met.
But the firm disclosed none of that work with State and the NSC in the lobbying report it filed with Congress for the fourth quarter of 2012. The report says the firm contacted only the House and the Senate.

"Clearly they're not disclosing everything," said Craig Holman, a lobbying expert at Public Citizen. "Money was being spent to influence State Department public policy and we are oblivious to that."

Obviously, John Podesta and his brother Tony, through their firm, used their connections with members of the Obama administration, including then Secretary of State Clinton, to attempt to influence policy in favor of pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians. The Podestas then deliberately failed to disclose their numerous contacts with the US government on behalf of this client until long after the conclusion of the 2016 election. Paul Manafort was forced to resign as Trump's campaign manager for what appears to be far less involvement with this front group for the Pro-Russian former President of Ukraine than John and Tony Podesta's firm had.

Imagine if information regarding the Podesta Group's ties to this allegedly Pro-Russian organization had come out last year during the height of the election campaign between Trump and Clinton. Would John Podesta have been forced to resign as Campaign Chair for Hillary? Would he be the subject of an investigation into his alleged financial ties to the Russian government, as Manafort is today? Let's not forget that the largest bank in Russia, Sberbank, hired the Podesta Group to lobby for an end sanctions imposed by the Obama administration. Indeed, Tony Podesta, John's brother and co-founder of their firm, personally received $170,000 from Sberbank for his services to end the sanctions.

I have no great love for Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn or Donald Trump. But to claim Manafort and Flynn were part of an effort to collude with the Russian government to throw the election to Trump based on their past lobbying work seems ludicrous. This is especially true when you consider the far more extensive financial ties to Russian and Pro-Russian interests by the Podesta brothers, and by other members of Hillary Clinton's inner circle, including the Clinton Foundation and own husband, former President Bill Clinton, all while Hillary was Secretary of State and in a position to influence the Obama administration's policy toward Russia and Russian business interests.

What should occur is an investigation of all the persons and parties involved with both Trump and Clinton regarding possible shady dealings with Russia prior to the 2016 election. But we know that isn't going to happen, don't we.

He was all bluster during his campaign and he told his supporters whatever they wanted to hear.
His justice department could reopen the investigation into her email server and the classified information she sent through it, but he's close friends with both of them and as Carlin said, "we ain't in the club".
If this country survives into the next century, historians will look back at the Obama administration and write about how corrupt it was.
No punishment for war crimes, bank fraud, his foreign policies that went against international laws, extrajudicial killings of American citizens and the numerous other abuses his administration was involved in.
Who knows, maybe the Yemen people's history will be preserved in a museum like the victims of the holocaust are.
If those 20 million people who are on the brink of starvation die, this will be 3 times worse than what happened to the Jewish people during WWII.

If a pro-Russian Ukrainian organization was paying the Clinton cabal during that time period, 2012-2014, then that organization was trying to buy influence for the Yanukovych government. Yanukovych was up for re-election in 2014. Is that the election the Secretary of State was "scrutinizing" ? That election never happened because of the Euro Maidan coup earlier that year which was supported by Nuland, McCain and Clinton.

EUROPEAN CENTER FOR MODERN UKRAINE UNVEILED IN BRUSSELS

She said that the ECMU is chaired by Party of Regions MP Leonid Kozhara.

According to Kirsch, the new non-governmental organization is to inform about political life in Ukraine, taking into account the promotion of the country's European integration aspirations, the introduction of contacts at the political, business and cultural levels between Ukrainian and European politicians and civil society, representatives of expert community.

"Among the many pressing issues the ECMU will pay special attention to the problems of the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine (including an in-depth and comprehensive trade agreement), as well as the parliamentary election scheduled for October," Kirsch said.

Additionally, the organization at the expert level will offer policy and legislative initiatives aimed at developing cooperation between Ukraine and the EU.

And just shooting out from my hip, does it really mean if you are pro-European that you are ANTI-RUSSIAN ? How come that many little people in Europe don't mind to be pro-European and don't feel threatened by Russia ? Me thinks we wouldn't be that ANTI-RUSSIANS, just because lately nobody felt threatened by the Putin, at least not in "old European" territory.

It's (the anti-Russian fears) an Eastern European sentiment, which apparently many Americans think-tankers like to exploit.

Ok, I am a dummy and just blah, blah around. I am also a naive. I thank God for it. If I weren't I would constantly be upset, angry and frustrated...

it was a binary choice, Russia or EU. The government was in trouble and needed a "bail-out". The EU offered a loan package with the intent of opening the country to western capital and, eventually, NATO. The Russians offered a loan package with slightly better terms. Yanukovych chose the Russian deal and that precipitated the 2014 coup.

Both him and McCain (as usual) had been visiting Ukraine numerous times both before and after the coup.
The reason for this was that Yanukovych was friendly with Russia as others have stated, but he wasn't removed just because of he took the bailout from Russia, he had refused to let foreign companies into the country.
The current president lived in Virginia close to Langley and he had many contacts with the personal there. He told Hillary in 2006 that if he was able to become president, he would open the country to foreign companies.
This is exactly what happened. Biden's son is or was vice president of one of the companies.
As I have stated many times, Biden is not who he appears to be.
He helped create what the drug war has turned into, he pushed for the bankruptcy bill that screwed Americans over by making it much harder for us to declare bankruptcy and a host of many other legislation.
This was why Obama picked him to be VP.
If he does run for president in 2020, he will be Clinton's and Bush's 7-8 terms.
Nothing will change for us nor for the rest of the world.

An old woman was walking down the road when she saw a gang of thugs beating a poisonous snake. She rescued the snake and carried it back to her home, where she nursed it back to health. They became friends and lived together for many months. One day they were going into town, and the old woman picked him up and the snake bit her. Repeatedly. "O God," she screamed, "I am dying! Why? I was your friend. I saved your life! I trusted you! Why did you bite me?"

The snake looked up at her and said, "Lady, you knew I was a snake when you first picked me up."

I HATE HATE HATE the man.

On the other hand, this would-be working-man-of-the-people was re-elected US senator from the Moneybags Corporate State of Delaware for over 36 years, a period known for the inexorable slow demise of labor unions. Ponder that for a while and you realize what a brilliant and accommodating man Biden must be.

Joe Biden has been making sausage for over a third of a century. Among his list of successes is the current Drug War and the current Counter-Terrorism War, both of which are now interlocking to become one long, bi-partisan war without end. While Biden may scrap with Republicans, he is a classic Cold War Liberal in the Hubert Humphrey mode, pushing moderately progressive legislation while reinforcing the pillars of imperial militarism and the burgeoning police-state that is post-9/11 America.

I was guilty of this for many years when I thought that a person was a good politician because they were friendly and said one thing while doing something else where no one could see what they did.
I fell for Obama's spiel big time because of the way he said the things I wanted to hear and because of his outward charm.
I didn't understand why so many people were warning me that he wasn't who he projected to be and once he was selected to win the election, his true colors started showing.
Bailing out the banks instead of the American people is what opened my eyes to him, but like so many others who suffered through the Bush years, I was looking for a life raft.
Mine came full of holes.

The billion dollar asset forfeiture program can be laid at Biden's feet. Most civil asset forfeiture is from civilians who have not been charged with a crime. The cost of trying to get one's money back is higher that the amount that they stole from you.

Uncle Joes MO, his method of operation. Takes in all this sympathy for suffering life's hardship's (like the rest of us schmucks) and using it as cover for the really horrible stuff he does to the rest of us.

EXAMPLE: Got all this pity when he lost his wife. He was the national poster child for one of life's biggest tragedies, and got national press touting the trials and tribulations of being a single father who took the train to work everyday, which just happened to be in the US Senate. Then he found it within himself to turn around and vilify and degrade a single professional woman who was asked to testify before a committee of which he was head. He treated Anita Hill like dirt. She was there in front of all those men by herself and he was the main culprit in making her out to be a liar and a whore. But he got a walk for that because he was poor Joe Biden. Can't you hear the snake hiss?

I could go on and give examples of his fondness for punishing the Great Unwashed, i.e. His bankruptcy legislation and his love of seeing druggies in jail forever - unless they happen to be his son, but you know all that.

Again, it's not his personality, it's the way that he 'uses' it.

John Grant made some very good points, imo.

Until I read Gest, I did not realize how deeply Joe Biden was invested in the drug war when I asked him what he thought of de-criminalizing drugs. Now it makes sense why he answered the way he did. I was a nobody and my question was a direct threat to what he was selling and what he’d made his name doing. I had to be swatted like a fly.

The psychoanalyst writer James Hillman writes that “The craving for new ideas and for intellectual skills to deal with the constraining effects of unthought ideas is a deep hunger in the American soul.” (You may have to read that over a couple more times.) What Hillman seems to be suggesting is that for someone like Senator Biden, a powerful man deeply invested in the militarization and criminalization of the nation’s drug problem, the idea of de-criminalizing drugs and how that might actually be a step toward sanity is, in his case, a willfully unthought idea possibly constraining us from positive change. The good doctor might question whether someone like Senator Biden secretly hungers to develop the skills to engage with such an idea. But I don’t have a license to pursue that kind of question.

One thing is certain, Hillman is the antithesis of a post-9/11 sausage-maker. He sees the obsession with security, force and control as “inertia of the spirit, a passivity that feels no vocation and shies from imaginative vision, adventurous thinking and intellectual clarification. That we imagine ourselves today as a nation of victims attests to a vacuum in the spirit of the nation. These are symptoms of the soul in search of clarity.” (From Kinds of Power: A Guide to Its Intelligent Uses by James Hillman.)

Mark Twain understood the corruption endemic to our legislative bodies, and he accordingly recognized that making laws is not always a pretty business. But that doesn’t mean our laws have to be nasty-smelling things forged out of corrupt back-room deals designed to bamboozle tax payers. The only reason the current struggles are so vile is that there is so much secrecy and dishonesty focused on sustaining an American imperial militarism around the world. This militarism, as happens in all cases of declining empire, eats resources that might maintain the nation’s crumbling infrastructure, provide for the social needs of American citizens and the general welfare of the homeland. It’s that simple.

Not bad ... thanks for the link.

It's very weird the corruption we wink at while we throw a shitfit about garden-variety corruption like this.

[EDIT: By "we" I mean, the United States, its media, its politicians, and some of its citizens--not C99]

Not that I think we shouldn't care--it just seems a little like, swallow a camel, strain at a gnat. People are purged off our voting rolls, have their voter registration data tampered with so they can't vote, and apparently that's all just part of the normal order of things; people out an undercover CIA agent, endangering all the people she ever worked with and jeopardizing whatever she was doing, out of apparently nothing more than pique, and they get a slap on the wrist (not that I'm in favor of the CIA, but isn't this a lot closer to treasonous behavior than meeting with some Russian lawyer hoping to get some dirt on another candidate?), people ascend to the Presidency by purging Black people off the rolls, and we're supposed to like them now because they said something critical of Donald Trump who is horrible because he's a racist, even though the person criticizing Trump for being racist climbed up into power on the backs of disenfranchised Black people, which is arguably much more horrible and racist than saying some shit on Twitter; we bring the people who created a pack of lies and sold it to us so that we would go to war against people who had never done us any harm, killing an estimated 1 million of them onto CNN and ask them to comment on the ethics of the Trump administration, when that's sort of like asking a lobotomized person to comment on the aesthetic value of a bunch of drunken rodeo clowns...

tried to get dirt on Hillary and this is what the country has been focused on since he won the election, both the republicans first hired Steele to get information about Trump and then the Hillary campaign did this same thing.
If it was acceptable for those people to try to find something to hit Trump with, then why would it be unacceptable for Trump to do that same thing and get dirt on Hillary?
This is a double standard, IMO.

During one of Trump's campaign events, he said that if Russia finds any of Hillary's emails, let him know.
This was blown out of proportion by everyone and they accused him of asking Russia to hack Hillary's email server.,
Hillary used this against Trump during one of the debates.

it is. This isn't a real charitable foundation in any sense of the word. It's a money laundering scheme and it sells the Clinton's connections to anyone who can pay them enough money for it.
There have been countless articles about this foundation, including how the Clinton's stole Haiti's reconstruction money.
Do a search for this and be prepared to be sickened by what they did to them.

People like to say that the Clinton's are saving people's lives from AIDS by selling them low cost drugs, but these drugs are basically worthless. This too is well known.

Clinton Foundation Donors Got Weapons Deals From Hillary Clinton's State Department

This article explains how Hillary used her position as SOS to enrich both her foundation and Bill's pockets.
This happened over and over during the 4 years she was at the state department and even though she was told to keep her position as SOS separate from her foundation, she didn't. And both Obama and congress were aware of that.

Both Clintons have caused so much pain and misery to people here and around the world, but people treat them like they are the second coming of the Kennedys.

Great essay Steven. Great commentary everyone.

IIRC, it was the Clinton Global Initiative that they shut down. They have compartmentalized their foundation in so many different groups, it would take a team of forensic accounts years to follow the money trail.

As to Hillary using her position at the State department to enrich both their foundations and Bill's pockets, (he received $2.5 million in speaking fees during her tenure at State), the Clinton's did not disclose any of the money they made during this time on their taxes.
Oops, BILLIONS in foreign donations to the foundation and $2.5 million for Bill somehow slipped their minds for 4 f*cking years when they did their taxes.
Supposedly they did declare this information after this information came out, but did anyone audit their finances afterward?
Has the Clinton foundation ever been audited?

And does anyone really think that the Saudis were interested in stopping AIDS or were for women's rights? LOLOLOL

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

Here's what Joe is saying about the recent events with the Nazis:

The giant forward steps we have taken in recent years on civil liberties and civil rights and human rights are being met by a ferocious push back from the oldest and darkest forces in America. Are we really surprised they rose up? Are we really surprised they lashed back? Did we really think they would be extinguished with a whimper rather than a fight?

Yep. I'm sure that the people of the OWS, BLM and DAPL protests think that this country has made Huge Giant Forward Steps on civil liberties.

We have to do what our president has not. We have to uphold America’s values. We have to do what he will not. We have to defend our Constitution. We have to remember our kids are watching. We have to show the world America is still a beacon of light.

I'm not sure if my stomach is strong enough this morning to read the comments on this.

to HACK into American's computers .
She said that no foreign government has ever interfered with our elections before.
"Jane Hillary, you ignorant ****! You are lying about how no foreign government has ever interfered with our elections before.
You have forgotten that Israel actually chooses our congress and if anyone displease them, they will block or remove them from congress.
Then there are the Saudis and other governments who have lobbyists that poor money into our elections after citizens united was passed.
As for those 17 intelligence agencies, this was debunked months before you spouted that lie. It's only 3 and they are all connected with Brennan who is the one who is testifying before congress on this and as usual, he is lying his patootie off.
But both he and Clapper got away with lying to congress before, so why would he think that he wasn't going to get away with it again?

content to be a truth-pursuing, naïve, idealistic nobody.

All the people I went to college with who prospered in U.S. politics — some as Democrats, some as Republicans — sooner or later ended up, if one is honest about it, justifying this or that set of lies and genocidal policies as the only sensible, realistic, and pragmatic path.

make sense of our own "Lebenslügen" and find some justificiations for them. Too true. I am glad when all is over. Luckily we all die one day. What a relief.

Several do have Clinton connections despite the t-rump bashing expected from the Post.

A more thoughtful piece from the Guardian...focused on the nature of the teams expertise in money laundering

Will they go after money laundering deals? If so, there could be something. If the focus is election hacking we know that's garbage.

From a bizarre article in the Nation trying to debunk the Seth rich narrative...

Sy Hersh’s profanity-laced declaration to Butowsky, in that recorded call, that the whole Russiagate thing is “a Brennan operation,” meaning former CIA director John Brennan, aided and abetted by Mike Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency. Said Hersh: “I have a narrative of how that whole fucking thing began, it’s a Brennan operation, it was an American disinformation and fucking the fucking president, at one point when they, they even started telling the press, they were back briefing the press, the head of the NSA was going and telling the press, fucking cock-sucker Rogers, was telling the press that we even know who in the GRU, the Russian Military Intelligence Service, who leaked it. I mean all bullshit.”

https://www.thenation.com/article/seth-rich-conspiracy-theorists-and-rus...

What is so strange about the Rich case is there is no autopsy, body cam footage, street cam footage, or even a hospital report...but he didn't do it! (and not a mention of those issues in the article).

It will remain interesting...

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

@Lookout

Some of the circumstances of Seth Rich's death do seem a little too random to me to be planned. I would think a professional would look for regular patterns of movement to anticipate Seth Rich's location and maybe plan out a "suicide". That would be a lot easier and less risky than following him around, wherever he may go, until 4 in the morning. That's just a thought. Maybe our anti-Hillary/anti-corporatist anger is biasing some of us to jump to too many conclusions. Maybe not though, but I think we should be careful about that.

Beware the bullshit factories.

Still working on my first coffee and came here confused, lol: were the Clintons and Podesta both working for a pro-Russian-government interest and working to install a fascist government in the Ukraine? Help for the mentally challenged, please!

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Edit: then read Azazello's (thanks!) reminder of the reason already sitting on the thread I hadn't yet read.
