Montana Republican candidate is a real classy guy

Multimillionaire Greg Gianforte told K Street lobbyists that he supported the Obamacare repeal, but partially walked it back when it turned out that 70,000 Montanans would lose their health insurance.
Today the CBO released their report on the Republican bill. When a journalist tried to ask him for a comment about it, this happened.

On the eve of a special election to fill Montana’s lone House seat, Republican candidate Greg Gianforte lost his cool while being interviewed by reporters at his Bozeman, Montana headquarters when, out of the blue, Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs says Gianforte body slammed him...
Here’s how BuzzFeed reporter Alexis Levinson, who was also present during the incident, described it:

“This happened behind a half closed door, so I didn’t see it all, but here’s what it looked like from the outside – Ben walked into a room where a local tv crew was set up for an interview with Gianforte. All of a sudden I heard a giant crash and saw Ben’s feet fly in the air as he hit the floor. Heard very angry yelling (as did all the volunteers in the room) – sounded like Gianforte...”

Nice. Felony assault the day before a close election.
That's an unexpected and unconventional strategy.
He's sure to capture the highly coveted "violent and unhinged" vote.
I bet the guy is a dream to work for.

To be fair both candidates have had their financial history questioned.
However, one you can relate to, and one...not so much.

Quist, who supports single-payer health care and legalizing marijuana, has weathered his own history of financial woes, stemming from what he says was a botched gallbladder surgery that for years left him unqualified for affordable insurance.
Forced to pay out of pocket for follow-up surgeries, Quist accessed Social Security and sold off part of the ranch he inherited from his family...
“Rob’s story is resonating with voters who want someone who will stand up for them,” Tina Olechowski, Quist’s communication director, said in a statement. “After medical complications following surgery, Rob got into debt. He paid off his debt, but Rob believes no one should ever face bankruptcy just because they get sick.”
By contrast, Gianforte, who narrowly lost a bid for the Montana governor’s mansion last year, raised $2 million from the Congressional Leadership Fund, a dark-money super PAC funded by “tobacco companies, video game manufacturers, other corporations and wealthy donors,” according to Bloomberg BNA...
Republican attacks on Quist’s personal financial struggles have increased amid heightened scrutiny of Gianforte’s own investments. Gianforte listed in financial disclosures a nearly $48,000 stake in a French-Swiss cement maker accused of making payments to the Islamic State terror group, as HuffPost first reported on Wednesday.
Gianforte also invested nearly $250,000 in index funds with holdings in Gazprom and Rosneft, the Kremlin-controlled oil and gas firms sanctioned by the U.S. after Russia invaded Crimea, The Guardian reported last month.

I can overlook the Kremlin. I can even overlook ISIS. But tobacco companies?
That's a step too far.

Meanwhile, another Berniecrat like Quist, won in Trump country.
I wonder if there is a lesson to be learned?

Democrat Christine Pellegrino has defeated her Republican challenger in a New York state special election, just months after the district went big for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential race.
Pellegrino, a delegate for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) during the Democratic presidential primary, defeated Republican challenger Thomas Gargiulo in the District 9 State Assembly special election.

Yep, that's felony assualt

At that point, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him. Faith, Keith and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the reporter. As Gianforte moved on top of Jacobs, he began yelling something to the effect of, "I'm sick and tired of this!"

Jacobs scrambled to his knees and said something about his glasses being broken. He asked Faith, Keith and myself for our names. In shock, we did not answer. Jacobs then said he wanted the police called and went to leave. Gianforte looked at the three of us and repeatedly apologized. At that point, I told him and Scanlon, who was now present, that we needed a moment. The men then left.

To be clear, at no point did any of us who witnessed this assault see Jacobs show any form of physical aggression toward Gianforte, who left the area after giving statements to local sheriff's deputies.

As for myself and my crew, we are cooperating with local authorities. It is not clear if charges will be filed against Gianforte at this time.

Scanlon later issued a statement saying that Jacobs "entered the [campaign] office without permission, aggressively shoved a recorder in Greg's face, and began asking badgering questions."

Later, the statement added, "After asking Jacobs to lower the recorder, Jacobs declined. Greg then attempted to grab the phone that was pushed in his face. Jacobs grabbed Greg's wrist, and spun away from Greg, pushing them both to the ground. It's unfortunate that this aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist created this scene at our campaign volunteer BBQ."

I wonder if the cement company was charged with aiding a terrorist organization, or is that something that only happens to the people that the FBI sets up?
Remember during a congressional hearing when they were asking Mueller who was in charge of the FBI how many terrorists' attacks they stopped and Mueller tried to take credit for over 50, but under further questioning, he admitted that most of them were from the people that they set up?

The Billings Gazette has pulled their endorsement for him and he's being charged with a misdemeanor assault, not felony assault.

A person commits the offense of aggravated assault if the person purposely or knowingly causes serious bodily injury to another person. Serious bodily injury is a physical injury that creates a substantial risk of death. An example of aggravated assault includes physical contact, such as a beating, that places the victim in critical condition or in a coma.

From the Gazette

What happens even less — hopefully never again — is a Montana candidate assaulting a reporter. While there are still questions left unanswered about GOP House hopeful Greg Gianforte's altercation with Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs, eyewitness accounts, law enforcement investigations and records are all shocking, disturbing and without precedent.
That's why The Billings Gazette editorial board is also doing something without precedent: We're rescinding our editorial endorsement of Greg Gianforte.
Although we're greatly troubled by this action against a member of the media who was just doing his job, to make this an issue of media intrusion or even a passionate defense of the role of a free press during an election would be to miss the point.

This wasn't the his first brush with the media.

We'd point out that all the other questionable interactions Gianforte had with reporters, including one case where he joked about ganging up on a reporter, must now be seen through a much more sinister lens. What he passed off as a joke at the time now becomes much more serious.

@gjohnsit are more "good" people in this Country than assholes. I try to believe that there are "good" Republicans out there who would not defend this abhorrent behavior. Even on GMA this morning Shutthefuckopolis (Stephanopoulos) began by asking Ben Jacobs, the reporter, if Ben did stick a recording device in Gianforte's face? Victim blaming 101. WE have a MOUNTAIN to climb to turn things around in the Country. Today I feel it's never going to happen.

@WIProgressive Glenn Beck. Sean Hannity. Michael Medved. Hugh Hewitt. A bought and paid for media that shills endlessly and lies outright whenever convenient. A TV addled nation that worships money, greed, violence, sociopathy and scorns caring or empathy. And now, thanks to Shillary and all the other ugly sell out "Democrats" we have the Rumper - the culmination of an idiotic and hateful America.

It's about standing for something

Regardless of the factors that determine the final outcome, a close tally would send a clear warning to both parties that even deploying political star power couldn’t propel a mandate-sized victory. But a surprise win for Quist would signal not only a rejection of President Donald Trump’s policies but also of the long-held Democratic playbook for winning ― or, more often of late, losing ― much-needed seats in Congress...
The Democrats virtually ignored Quist until late April. Asked about the Montana special election, Rep Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), the DCCC’s 2016 national mobilization chair, told HuffPost last month he “didn’t know about that.” But as the race heated up, the party began spending more money, tripling its initial investment to $600,000 earlier this month.

“It seems clear that Gianforte’s massive edge in early funding allowed him to attack Quist’s character viciously before there were sufficient funds for Quist to respond to the vitriol,” Jeff Hauser, a longtime Democratic operative and director of the Revolving Door Project, told HuffPost. “If Quist should lose, the national Democrats who provided financial assistance after mail-in voting had already begun will have to question anew their initial reluctance to engage in the race in March and early April.”

Quist attracted the enthusiastic backing of progressive activists because of his unabashed liberal stances.

Winnie Wong, co-founder of the People for Bernie, an online group, credited Sanders followers for getting involved in Quist’s campaign early and “corner[ing]” the Democratic Party into following suit.

If Quist wins, Wong argued, “the overwhelming message that will resonate across the country is that Berniecrats can win in red states. That will send a message to the corporate wing of the Democratic Party to move left.”
