TOP Needs Our Help

Guess what I found in my spam filter today? An email from TOP with a link to their Act Blue page, under the title "Daily Kos is $591,451.20 away from our March goal. Can you chip in $1 to support the team that brings progressive news to your inbox every day?"

I was amazed that the most prominent "progressive" blog in the US of A needs over Half a million dollars to make it through the month? I thought they were rolling in moola, what with all the ad revenue and subscription revenue. Color me astonished to discover that they need my $1 bill so badly.

Well, as much as I'd love to help them out, I have a bunch of medical bills at the moment that are staring me in the face thanks to my high deductible insurance plan (Thanks Obama). However, never let it be said that I am unwilling to do my part to help a "fellow traveler" so I have some free advice (always the best kind) for Markos Moulitsas. Do what every other red-blooded American internet corporation does when it needs money:

(1) Layoff your employees until your revenues exceed your expenses,

and

(2) Sell Daily Kos to Facebook, Google or even Yahoo.

I'm sure there are some people Markos knows from attending parties where he mingled with some of the most important leaders of the Democratic Party. People who can put him in touch with investment bankers who support more and better Democrats and are quite familiar with what it takes to sell off your company for a tidy little profit (after their fees are paid, of course).

I'm willing to bet they'd even structure the deal to keep Markos as the nominal figurehead at a tidy salary for the next five years or so. Because, who doesn't love his insightful, if sometimes edgy commentary?

I suggest we all [Trigger Warning!] email Daily Kos or call them on the phone - (510) 394-5577 - (with this recommendation. Heck, as part of this transaction, Markos could even offer to sell non-voting shares in his blog to its members. Who wouldn't want framed stock certificate hanging on their wall showing they own a piece of the TOP pie?

Are you with me?

Anyone?

Hey Marcos, the March 2017 goal of sponging $591,451.20 off of the hoi polloi will be a lot tougher than the March 2016 goal of running the progressives off of your site.

None of those companies would buy DailyKos. However, I could see selling to Soros, George Clooney, or other high roller rich democrats.

But this explains why a number of front pagers who I thought had some moral and intellectual integrity are completely falling over themselves to push the worst sorts of propaganda. They don't want to get laid off.

I have to wonder as the resistance becomes more impervious to democratic party co-opt'ing, if people will see TOP as just a useless mouth piece of a useless democratic party?

It went to http://blog.feedspot.com/political_blogs/ , which described KOS as "unashamedly liberal." That is a lie. KOS is anything but liberal. While the folks at that link are lying about KOS, they also imply that being ashamed of being liberal is a norm that KOS violates.

@earthling1 The site made it as far up as the 1100th most popular, and now is down around the 2200th most popular. (However ALEXA measures that.)

The intuitive understanding of the graph is correct: up means more popular, down means less so. And for a site run to make its owners cash, up is good and down is bad.

With respect to us, of course, "good" and "bad" on a popularity graph for TOP runs exactly the other way around! Smile

1) That goal is odd... so I imagine Steven that that don't need half a mil, to me is seems like they need perhaps a mil or something. I imagine they have raised some cash already and have a ways to go yet. Just my interpretation anyway. But yeah, like the DNC, why wouldn't their employee Kos just ask for the funds? Oh that's right, they have to "pretend" to be grassroots. Cool beans.

2) That site is a cesspool of 1% doctors, lawyers, hedge fund guys, and wall street sycophants. Sure, we have some lawyers and doctors here, but the difference is that the folks here actually acknowledge the problems that exist. Many of those folks there have shown hatred and disgust towards poor people, even with kos' rant on wanting poor people to suffer and die. In the end that place is merely opportunistic, like most Dems. They pretend to like social issues (even though just a few years ago Dems like them viewed gays as second class citizens but now they are the champions of them), and tell you if you want to talk about economics you are privileged. Yeah, I'm privileged because I'm poor. Truly tone deaf people. Read a comment that said since the DNC elected a Latino and African American, that makes it progressive. Oh my God....

So yeah, no love for the place. Sorry went off on a rant. I partially wrote an essay here about some of that identity garbage they keep shoving into people's faces. Just frustrates me.

@Strife Delivery Love how Steven shoved all those Neoliberal mantras back in their faces, such as things "cost-cutting to stay competitive" and the Grade School Napoleon's fraudulent plea for money from the minions, when he's always been paid off by deep pocketed Dem Party operatives. Fuck those people completely, as Strife says.

You hit it on the head, about that place filled with smug, elitist 10%ers who actually had the unmitigated audacity to make fun and denigrate notions of economic inequality. It was a constant thread, but a ploy kept up by a ring of Neoliberal cheerleaders such as (can barely remember their stupid names) BBB, dhonig and whatever other little douchebags that could be counted on to unwittingly run interference for the oligarchs, their corporate and banking masters. When King Doucheboy himself actually wrote "oligarchy blah, blah, blah" I resolved to both want to kick their asses and leave the place for good.

I said my piece there the week before the NY Dem Primary, and never tire of pointing to it, as being one of only two essays in the past few years to exceed 1000 rec's, and it being a pretty good summary of how I felt toward that pestilent Neoliberal cesspool and how that place no longer represented my and many other's values.

Here's some excerpts of "As Another Pissed Off Liberal, There Are Some Things I'm Not Interested In":

I’m not interested in getting the school letter to put on my DK varsity sweater, or wearing the blue Dem uniform, if it requires a Loyalty oath. Oathkeepers and their ilk make me sick. Witch hunts, whether conducted by paranoid and delusionary RW conservative Senators or intolerant religious folks in Salem or by white supremacist racists in Nazi Germany or white-hooded Confederate businessmen and cops in the South, revolt me.

I’m not interested at all in the Front Page’s insistence on shooting-Repugs-in-a-barrel ad nauseuem. I’m also not interested in fear-based motivation that lies at the heart of incrementalism as a strategy.

But there is a simple, stark truth often overlooked here of which I am very interested in.

And that is, we only exist as Americans because we stared down the Loyalists and fought our oppressors in a revolution. The greatest Democratic president in our history, F.D.R., reminded us to “remember always that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionaries.” There is only one presidential candidate who speaks of revolution today.

These are the kinds of things I’m interested in:

I’m interested in why there’s chronic dysfunction and a Revolving Door in DC.

I’m interested in why my country administers healthcare through for-profit insurance companies.

I’m interested in why my democracy requires the endless dialing-for dollars by elected officials to do the work of The People.

I'm interested in why my friends can’t afford the ever-rising rents and cost of living because we won't challenge the malignancy of an economic system in which the end game is rigged to concentrate wealth in the hands of a greedy financial and real estate cabal.

I’m interested in why the CEO of Con Edison makes $10 million a year in a sector everybody relies upon that should mandate it it collectively owned by the public as a non-profit...

I’m interested in prosecuting the Economic Terrorists of Wall St whose relentless hyper-focused pursuit of profit has destroyed the American middle class, by hijacking the economy in the 2000’s and continuing to savage it even more today with ongoing rampant ponzi schemes, institutional fraud and fine print deception. This pathology will destroy the planet and its resources.

That’s where my loyalty lies. Not to any website or political party or my own ethnicity or the college I graduated from. Whoever speaks that language clearly and unequivocally will earn my fealty. We will stand and fight together.

My loyalty is to the dispossessed, the marginalized, the downtrodden, the unjustly imprisoned. My loyalty is to the great mass of people forced into the desperate shadows of un/under-employment, hunger, not being able to spend time with their children, working while sick and not able to take proper vacations. To the poor folks harassed, beaten and killed by the cops...

Bernie’s absolute domination of young voters, in many cases exceeding Obama’s historical campaign, will take this party deep into the next generation, on top of which the overwhelming numbers of Independents and sane Republicans who will vote for him means one thing very clearly: Bernie Sanders wins in a landslide of epic proportions in November.

I’m tired of seeing too many stumble and fall, then get crushed under the relentless and merciless grinder of unbridled capitalism. It has run its course. People know it too; they just haven’t heard any politician talk about it honestly, until now.

They haven’t been told how the government has been giving massive tax break to the wealthy, “subsidies” to oil companies and floating a bloated military budget, all of which leads to concentrated wealth in the hands of a few and monopoly business ownership. All that money could be used to bulk up a healthcare for all, restore broken communities and offer free higher education incentive to those who want it. That’s what taxes are supposed to be for. Again, there’s only one candidate with the courage and vision to frame it clearly and have been fighting against it with integrity for decades.

Like my gloriously rebellious American antecedents down through the ages I realize the only way to topple injustice and corruption is through revolution.

We have a chance to elect a rare human being.

It’s time to be bold. Agitate, agitate, agitate.

@Strife Delivery
Our political Duopoly has been a dysfunctional sham for decades. It maintains a conceptual stranglehold on the nation's consciousness by categorizing all political thought as an either/or proposition. This conceptual framework has evolved into a divide-and-conquer tool used by an elite class of lawmakers to define what is politically possible and what is not. It perpetuates a system of governance that concentrates power into ever-fewer hands -- all the while providing the illusion of choice by staging "elections" that amount to little more than substance-free (and very expensive) theatrical productions.

Party loyalists who continue to support either side of this dualistic structure are not participating in anything that could properly be called "democracy". They are participating rather, in a well-orchestrated sharade replete with pre-ordained roles and pre-determined outcomes. It's a strictly linear tug of war, limited to two and only two directions, so that no matter what the outcome, only one particular line of force will be contested, and all others ruled out.

Then after an "election" is over, the winning side gets together with the losing side to divide up the spoils, and share them with various sponsors. The system is self-perpetuating and self-aggrandizing, but only rarely do any actual benefits accrue to the voters themselves.

@Mark from Queens @Mark from Queens

Please do periodically repost that wonderful statement! We need to hear this...

And I'd like to add that the only loyalty oath I can think of which must be respected - and hasn't been - is the Oath of Office taken by politicians in order to qualify for/retain public office swearing to uphold the principles embodied in the US Constitution - which includes the Bill of Rights which some American Founders fought to have included for this reason - of democracy, law, inalienable citizen rights...

No amount of bad legal precedents or bad law passed against the Constitutional principles of democracy can overcome the overriding concepts enshrined within that Constitution, beginning with government of, by and for the people, with equal rights, treatment and opportunity for all.

Any illiterates/con-men thinking that their Constitution is 'only a piece of paper', which they can pretend to swear to uphold, have thereby self-disqualified and cannot legitimately form any part of a legitimate government. Which includes branches such as the Supreme Court and others.

None of these abuses/abusive government officials are legitimate and can only be enforced/remain in office while the people are conned into thinking that these can somehow be 'legalized' by the passage by corrupt public officials of illegal 'Simon Says' self-interest-serving 'law'. And this is why 'optics are everything' to these con-artists.

Edited to add that another confusion tactic is used by lumping such as environmentalists and independent scientists working toward/arguing for the public good together with corporate/billionaires lobbying against the public good for their own enrichment and increased power taken from the public as a single group of 'special interests', claiming that the one group of lobbyists cannot be restricted without restricting the other.

The first group represents the public interest, the second are self-interests acting against the public interest and should be specifically identified as such and kept out of public policy and government.

Semantics matter - they are the basis of PR and the tool of every con-man.

And this tactic of confusion in those working against the public interest must also be recognized when used in legalese to pervert the purpose of law in protecting the public, which also includes protecting their inalienable rights, the pursuit of happiness being specifically included in the US Constitution, making it very clear that democracy means a system designed to best benefit the public as a whole and as individuals, respecting their individual means of seeking happiness provided that the rights of others are not unduly infringed upon.

Allowing the wealthiest relative few to purchase policy/politicians/governments intended to serve the public interest is so clearly not in line with the concept of government of, by and for the people ensuring equal rights, treatment and opportunity for all that no sane/legitimate judge could accept it as such or claim it to fit with the Founders intentions.

When in doubt, we must always return to basics, to principles and mechanisms. And we must apply this to every area where self-interests have skated on propaganda. In other words, virtually everywhere.

(Also removed a double-punched 'o' - seem to be seeing single this morning, as a refreshing change, lol.)

@Strife Delivery I have a very different perspective. Although there are some 1%er lawyers, doctors, and hedge fund guys, i think many of those who present that way are merely posers. It's their online persona. The impression I get is that there are a lot of aging lonely people with poor social skills and little in the way of an active life. And they are of middling to low intelligence. They are so caught up in combatting their loneliness that kos becomes a lifeline to them. Anything to feel that they belong! that they exist! They act like a bunch of tweens. Intolerant of any opposing view and incapable of stating a reasoned position. The dumber they are, the more loudly and persistently they rage.

And then of course there are those self-aggrandizing attention seekers.

A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.

I'm going to call that number and get their mailing address, telling them I want to send a money order.
But instead of a money order I think it may prove entertaining to send them an invoice demanding oh,, say.. $27.

One finds one's fun where one can.

It would be a nice gesture for Trump to show his gratitude and ensure his future re-election.

That said, where does Kos get off begging for a handout when he's running a for fucking profit enterprise? Does he think his blog is a bank? Does he not see the atrocious hypocrisy and irony in attacking Bernie and his supporters for being too-left socialist hippies and then turning around and trying to "socialize" the overhead costs of his shitty front page propagandists working in that chic new (expensive) office he put them in when he was flush with his Hillary-Pimping cash?

Kos, you shit in your own nest. You killed your brand. You betrayed your "clientele" and you helped Trump get elected. Why would anyone want to give you something for nothing? Let me pass on the advice you gave us: Fuck off.
