Great News regarding my wife

My wife has been discharged from the hospital. There is a small issue that will require her to follow-up with specialists, but nothing serious enough to require continued hospitalization at this time.

Thank you to everyone who commented in my previous diary, and offered your support. I am very grateful to know that so many in this community have my back. May you all have the best Holiday season you can, and keep in your thoughts all those who are in pain or suffering right now, whether members of c99 or people we don't know, but who are just as deserving of help.

Thanks again,

Steve

all of us could use a good holiday with the people we love, or at least one without undue strife.

Thank you.

I don't think I could have lasted mush longer. It was as if my wife and our family were under siege if that makes any sense. A poor metaphor to use considering Aleppo etc. I know but it is what first came to mind.

I'd like to say like Danny Glover "I'm too old for this shit" but it seems the older I and my wife get the more shit happens, at least from a medical standpoint.

even so, I still don't like doctors and hospitals and the American system of health care.

And I agree with you about our healthcare system, for both delivery of services and payment.

Still paying off copays and ambulance bills for my last visit. $7000 for 4 hours in the ED. Insurance covered the majority, negotiated to a lower fee.

Yes, ridiculous to pay that much. Right now though I will worry about the damages later. Very tired and worn down and sick myself with major flare of autoimmune system. Didn't get much sleep, overdid it on the physical and emotional side.

Even last night after I though everything was fine when I left, a night nurse upset my wife and had her in tears so my daughter, her BFF (female) and I went down to see her. My two young team members cheered her up in visitor's lounge, while I had a polite diplomatic conversation with the nurse in question.

Nurse wasn't a bad person, she just had no idea of the effect of her conversation on my wife, even though she had been told generally that Clara had cognitive issues. She didn't have the full story, so I told it to her, giving concrete examples of why even a seemingly innocuous statement telling my wife there was nothing that could be done about the noise, when Clara was already agitated and overwhelmed was counterproductive. I think nurse then understood or at least somewhat better. We stopped Clara from having a more serious anxiety/panic attack and the rest of the night went well, but I am so tired of having to explain to so many medical personnel how she needed to be treated differently because of the brain injuries she sustained. Many times I just wanted to scream and yell at them , but I stayed calm, and did my best not to blame them for anything that happened. If I never have to do that again I will be immensely happy.

It is completely understandable, but so hard. When I was ostensibly dying in hospital (but no one told me or I filtered out that message) my daughter was doing clinical rotation as a nurse-to-be in the same hospital. She would visit with me; I did not actually feel how awful and stressed she felt. We have both survived. Peace be with you both, at home.

Having treated hundreds of TBI patients over the years, I have learned that most people do not appreciated the devastating effects of brain injury. They just don't get it. If a person doesn't have a tongue hanging out on one side of the mouth and drooling with crossed eyes, then Mr. or Ms. Citizen, no matter how well-intentioned they may be otherwise, thinks that a person is "just faking" although has sustained serious brain injury. The stereotypical retort they give, sometimes under their breath is: "you look alright, so stop whining and go about your business [like a normal person]".

This prejudice is only the modern equivalent of behavior in the early 20th century, when people crossed the street to avoid walking past a visually obvious impaired individual. Brain injury is 99.99% not visibly obvious.

Now that Clara is home, both of you should heal better, and hopefully you will. Best wishes.

Take care of yourself now, Steven. Is there something that would reward you and help you feel better? A big old pot of green tea with lemon and honey or some such? Binge watching your favorite series? Lots of naps?

Whatever it is, you deserve it for fighting the good fight.

I'm so happy to hear that Clara is home and doing better. Here's hoping you're able to take care of yourself, Steven, and that the two of you have loved ones close and a beautiful holiday to come.

I did not say anything, but I was worried for you. This kind of thing, when it happens now, feels so compounded by the heightened stress the nation is feeling. It's everywhere. It seems to me that people are hauling around a existential burden that has been imposed on them by the soulless psychopaths in leadership positions in the US.

More than ever, I see that Americans do not find fulfillment as capitalists. They can only exist, in the first place, because they are communards. That is where they are healed and restored.
