Senate Passes anti-Propaganda Act

The Senate version of H.R. 5181 passed this week inside the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Conference Report.

Long before the "fake news" meme became a daily topic of extensive conversation on wuch mainstream fake news portals as CNN and WaPo, H.R. 5181 would rask the Secretary of State with coordinating the Secretary of Defense, the Director of National Intelligence, and the Broadcasting Board of Governors to “establish a Center for Information Analysis and Response,” which will pinpoint sources of disinformation, analyze data, and — in true dystopic manner — ‘develop and disseminate’ “fact-based narratives” to counter effrontery propaganda.

Considering just a few years ago, we also legalized propaganda: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130715/11210223804/anti-propaganda-b...

So is propaganda legal, or illegal? I'm betting the 'good' propaganda will be legal and the 'bad' propaganda is illegal. Our government will thankfully discern and decide this for us.

This is doubleplusgood doublespeak.

All our government has to do to root out this insidious behavior is to look at itself.
The mirror is cracked.
The view distorted.
Yet all they'll see is beauty while we wretch at the ugliness.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

We don't need state paid for and sponsored TV station as we have the mass media serving that function. Save some tax payer money.

As we know, in an almost cynical attempt to manipulate the public, the US Congress gives legislative acts names that are often the reverse of what the act really does.

Accordingly, what should the American people expect from a law entitled "The Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act"? Yeah, I know the word "foreign" is in there, but it will be easy enough to declare that something published by a US source was caused by them darn furriners trying to cause trouble.
