A New Way to Support Fellow C99er's - The Caucus 99 Catalogue (Coming Soon)

No good deed goes unpunished, as the saying goes, but sometimes a wrongful act can lead to something good. A few days ago, I made fun of the Kos Katalogue, thinking it was just another way for Markos to make a buck. Turns out I was dead wrong, as Elena in the comments let me know (in the most polite way possible):

Thanks, Steven! Many of the Katalogue folks are longtime
writers who haven't been involved in the pie fights. I'd be surprised if it includes any Hillbots, since they have probably left DKos by now and since they have probably had a nice source of income over the last two years or so. It is not a Markos project, but one he tolerates.

My stuff is included, but I would be delighted to take orders from here for those who don't want to give DKos the traffic.

I know, you're having fun with it, thinking of all the Hill-related stuff that could be included. But this does make me think, maybe we should seriously do something similar here for 99%ers? What does everyone think?

Well, several people thought it was a good idea. After all, many c99 members who post or comment (or merely lurk at c99) no longer frequent TOP. And several c99 members are artists and entrepreneurs who support themselves or supplement their incomes with money earned from selling their wares online, such as Elena herself, and snoopydawg. In fact, I bought the following photograph from snoopydawg for my wife as a Christmas present (don't worry she doesn't read my blog posts so my secret is safe):

MorningAtTheSandDunes.jpg

A group of us communicated with JtC about this catalogue idea and he said, sure, go for it. (Thanks JtC!) After all, what could be better than buying and selling from and for each other instead of handing our money over to a faceless big box store? For that very reason, we are in the process of creating a new group, "Caucus 99 Catalogue" the link to which will be prominently displayed on the right side of c99 web page under the GROUPS category. Elena will be the group's administrator and responsible for updating the catalogue.

For those of you interested in being included in the catalogue as sellers, please send Elena a private message. Clink on this link to her member page and then click on the blue colored "Send this user a private message," to let her know of your desire to participate, and she will take it from there.

If for any reason that doesn't work, simply click on the "Messages" link on the left border of this page, then click on "Write a new message." Then type in "elenacarlena" in the "To" line, type "Caucus Catalogue" in the "Subject" line and then type in the "Message" box whatever you wish to tell her regarding your interest in the catalogue, as well as ask her any questions regarding how your products/services will be listed there, etc.

As soon as we are ready to roll out the the fully functional Caucus 99 Catalogue (hopefully no later than Cyber Monday), Elena will post a flagship essay, giving both buyers and sellers all the information people will need to start making purchases and support the hard work of our fellow c99 members. I know I appreciate the opportunity to buy from my fellow progressives, supporting artists and small businesses instead of multinational corporations. So what better time to launch our very own Caucus 99 Catalog than during the Holiday shopping season?

Please leave any questions or comments below, and I or Elena will do our best to respond to them. And again, many thanks to JtC and to all of the members of the c99 community. Make sure to send JtC some love and a present (or 2 or 3 or ...) by clicking on caucus99percent.com's Donate link in the upper right side of this page

Thanks everyone,

Steve

but it's his decision, not mine. I am currently art-less, but I have some items that want to leave me. And I would prefer a buyer I trust.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

him in the initial group. I can include you, RL, just send me how you'd like your blurb to read. I will also try to include two small photos each, at least for now, so if you would like, please upload those to the C99 Image Library and let me know what they're called - i.e., remove carets and replace with parentheses, such as: (img src="/sites/default/files/user%20images/%232%20Screenshot%20--%20HRC%2C%20Trampling%20The%20Law%2C%20Etc..png" width="500" height="416" alt="#2 Screenshot -- HRC, Trampling The Law, Etc..png" /). I'll be able to include them easily from there.

is one of the people involved in getting this up and running.

RL, if you ever have an interest there are ways you can tell people how you want to be contacted and how payment can or cannot be made. The catalog is just a free advertising/marketing tool. It won't limit people to how they choose to sell their stuff, but point them to links where people have their online business set up (like Elena's and soopydawg's sites), or, e.g., their book is for sale, or you can just include a description of what you are selling and on how people can get in contact with you regarding a potential sale.

The catalog is solely to foster sales by c99 members of their wares, whatever they might be. It isn't intended to play a middle man role, but only to let people here know that a c99 member has something to sell, and how someone can go about making arrangements to purchase those items from the people who are listed in the catalog.

to Steven and Elena (and JtC!) for setting this up!

I don't have anything to sell at this time, but I look forward to seeing the work of other c99p folks and supporting them with purchases when I can. It would also be great if there could be a way for a buyer to add on a "tip" in the form of a small donation to c99% ... even in small amounts such donations could make a difference over time, and people could buy products to support other site members, and throw on a tip to help support the site at the same time. Smile

One question that comes to mind as I write... will this be just for selling products/items, or are services also marketable through this catalogue? Can people market services like freelance editing, graphic design, website development, etc.?

So if what you are selling is a service, such as the ones you mention, yes, you could be listed in the catalog. No charge. Smile

Ps. I like your tip idea for the site. I don't know if we can work it in initially as most people will be dealing directly with the sellers - the catalog isn't intended to play a middleman role, at least not yet as I understand the concept - but I'll pass the "tip" idea along to Elena. Maybe we can include a link to the C99 Donate button with the catalogue's list of sellers/service providers.

I'm not currently selling any services, but I might be in the market for someone to help me with a website at some point down the road.

I also have some items around that could be re-homed. I don't need to sell them right now, but I could... this has actually got me thinking about doing an online "garage sale" here, and donating all the proceeds to the site as a fundraiser. I don't know if I have enough things to sell to do that... I'll have to look around. We've inherited things like jewelry and artwork from family that have passed on, stuff we don't use or have space for that someone might love... but I know we gave a lot of things away to a friend who was raising money for medical expenses for her daughter last year. So I don't know exactly what all is left to sell anymore.

It's just a random idea right now ... I'll get in touch if I find enough things to put something like this together. Your work makes it possible, and sparks the idea at least. Such a great thing to do for the community here.

He had some ideas about an online auction or something similar to your online garage sale, that if we had enough people involved would work well as a fundraiser I believe.

Oh and Elena is the driving force behind the Catalogue, but I make a nice front man. Smile

I realize that some people aren't interested in purchasing other people's photography, but if anyone could help me spread the word that I have a website to sell photographs I would appreciate the help.
And if you aren't interested in purchasing a photo, but know of someone who would like one, I do gift cards and they can choose the photo themselves.
Thanks.

They sell for $5 a piece around here , and are great for people who love the work but can't afford the larger prints.

There is another site that will do them and I think the lowest price is #3.95 I will post the link to it in the catalogue essay.
Thanks for asking.

Quite a number of months ago, I donated $60 to the site here and said I'd probably make another donation towards the end of the year to help keep things going.

Well, thanks to your reminder, I just did it again!

Keep up the good work, JtC and Joe!
