Well at least the more I think about it the more I think we should at least lay claim to it and own it regardless of it's validity.
So yeah, in my opinion I say go ahead and own this one.

...but I don't think that was mostly progressives who stayed home. I think it was primarily folks who are marginalized economically and saw no champion in this contest. I think what is witnessed with those who stayed away is learned helplessness - I know about those feelings from other parts of my life than politics. I'm sure some who opted to not vote were progressive, but I doubt it was the bulk of those who bowed out. I think we would have seen higher Green party votes if it was progressives registering protest. That's just my take.

Ended up sticking to my earlier pledge that after 2012 I was no longer voting against but for, so I filled in the spot for Stein.

my grandson told me that then I 'wouldn't have the right to complain' about anything if I didn't.
I really had no reason not to vote other than I knew nothing I would do would really count. (Voted for Stein.) I have no car so Andrew called and asked if I wanted a ride after my daughter got off work. They're both Clinton supporters (he's over the top because he's got mental problems) and they've been on my ass for weeks because I told them I'd never vote for her, she was corrupt, pay-to-play money whore, etc. Always led to some really 'interesting' discussions, but they asked for it. All they had to do was not bring the subject up. ANYWAY, when he threw that old saw in my face I knew I'd best vote or I'd go to my grave listening to that crap. So I walked up the hill to Bancroft School and voted. NO WAY was I getting trapped in a car with those two. (It's only about 5 blocks away anyway.)
And the worst part, those are my own words coming back to bite me in the ass. That's what I ALWAYS told my kids. Now my Grandson is using it on me. Funny how things like that work.

My wife and I voted for Trump here in Arizona. Partly because we were dead set against the execrable Clinton winning here. But they crushed our Bernie, they called us names and said we were racist for not supporting Hillary (and my wife had a reserved space in Hell ), and we said frack 'em. If they don't want us, we don't want them.
My family have been Democrats for more than 100 years. I've only voted for one other Republican in my 60 years on the planet, and she was a personal friend running for a local office. They're gonna have to do better next time if they want to re-earn my vote.

I've been a Democrat all my life, and done a lot of campaign work for them, but on top of Hillary's pure evil, if you look past the crude language, his policy ideas were actually better than hers.
Wisconsin went for Bernie in 71 out of 72 counties, so after that ugly primary, I wasn't surprised that we switched to Trump rather than Hillary.

I crossed over to vote for Trump, was undecided until the night before when read survey that my state would be going for Clinton. I decided that stopping corruption and endless war was more important than voting 3rd Party, and so I voted for Trump.
If you look at the numbers from surveys, those who said they would vote for Johnson, for example, and then look at how many votes he actually did receive, you might come to the conclusion that many independents, undecideds, and progressives did exactly the same thing.
It will be interesting to see the studies that come out in the future, for surely this election will be a well researched one!!!

I saw a massive amount of enthusiasm for Bernie among college students, but nothing since. My understanding is that exit poles indicate they supported Hillary Clinton, but I bet turnout was very low. Anyone have any real data?

But turnout for the 18-29 age group was 19% this year, 19% in 2012, and 18% in 2008. Essentially no change.

The upside of claiming or admitting responsibility
is reaping the benefits like the Christian Conservatives did. They made no bones about staying home if the candidate or Party didn't reflect their views and to some extent they still have a stranglehold on the Republicans on social issues. Liberals in general have always behaved the way the Progressive Caucus in Congress did - roll over loyally on all issues despite being the largest and most influential caucus. Power unused is no power at all.
Aside from that, diminished turnout in a Presidential election is huge! A big hunk of the electorate was vocal in that they declared both parties as being ineligible for a vote. Some people are alienated enough from government that they don't feel any need to don a clothespin in order to benefit a party they don't care about in the first place. What the exact percentage of liberals sitting out is, I am unclear, but I would bet that it is larger than the margin between Clinton and Trump. Oh well.

Yes, we do need to mean it, but consider this:
the "Tea Party" started out as astro-turf. The biggest reason it took off enough to field candidates up and down the ticket and start taking over state houses and Congressional seats, is largely because the owner class (Koch and company) saw how it caught on with the wacky right 'fringe' and they decided to bankroll it. We can mean it all we want--and I know damned well that we do and we would--but it will still takes lots of money.
Since we don't have that, we are going to have to get creative. And that, I know we can do! It's not going to be easy, but it's going to look insurmountable at first because of $$, unless we can find our own bankroll. We have to hang in there until we figure it out, though.
Great vision, though, Alpha. You're right overall, we should wear it as a badge of honor. In the end, I was pissed that neither Libertarians or Greens got much at all in the way of votes. I don't think I believe those totals, on reflection, either. For one thing, too many people were pledging to support both those parties. And I considered that TPTB don't want other parties fucking things up in the future if they can possibly help it, because that really screwed things up for the Cheating Class! I'd bet those Stein and Johnson votes got disappeared or thrown to Trump, because GOP is better at that shit than the DNC ever was. Major bonus for them: stifling the third party vote is supposed to quell the masses, so they can keep telling you The Greens and The Libertarians are fucking losers and you won't even try to work with them. Vive la Two Party Fuckery.
My bigger point though is that yeah, if someone wants to accuse me of owning it, well fine! I like your answer. I've been saying for years that while we in the actual LEFT don't have the power to win alone, neither did those mealy-mouthed centrist suckups. Oh, they're crying that we let Trump win? Whatever. If they want my vote anymore, they are going to have to put up real lefty candidates, instead of the slop they tried to serve up this year. They were warned, repeatedly, by so many of us, that that was the case. I told them after 2014 that I was done eating the Democratic Party's shit sandwiches, and I fucking well meant it.
And another thing--IMO, if THEY want to work with US, they can reach out to US and get back on the LEFT where they belong. If they don't belong there, then I don't belong with them and I want not a damned thing to do with them. I will NOT fight alongside them to "put the Democratic Party" back on track. They slayed it this year. It needs to go die and stay dead. We can resurrect the Greens from doom or we can start another party, but the Democratic Party has lost me for good.

I think we need to schedule an electoral blood bath for the 2020 primary elections. Get in some good people and take out a few of the size incumbents: the rest will get the message.

Like many, I missed Bill Clinton's destruction of the New Deal during the 90's. He recited statistics about how much better things were ..... And the right wing attacks were actually smoke screens to carry out their product.
Listen Liberal by Thomas Frank was one of the many places we learned how bad they were and how they worked with Republicans to craft their program.
Progress, globalization, development, etc. , all part of the neo liberal agenda, are on course to destroy the planet. And Thomas Frank pointed out that Globalization was in the same space for the Clinton's as God is for many. Thus she is for fracking, for TPP, for the destruction of indigenous people like the Palestinians, etc.

One of the keys to Bernie's success, was that his message was very attractive to non-partisans or independents. They came out in droves to vote for him in their respective states, changing to Dem etc to be able to do so.
Survey after survey early in the primary revealed that this group despised Hillary, and wouldn't be voting for her.
In the end, where did they go?
No doubt it is the independents, not the progressives, who cost Hillary the election.

They have not done a lot for African Americans, but they have done a lot for and with perceived African American leaders, I believe.

The primary was 2 days later, and Bernie got crushed.
His inability to break through to AA community was first shown in Nevada and persisted a thru NY,
after which Bernie was done. His AA numbers were always about 25-75, never got better.

Had he been able to split that vote, DNC would have had a hard time stopping him.
He never came close to 40%, best was MI at about 30% I believe.
I think it will be hard to build a useful 3rd party in 4 years if it is opposed by the vast majority of AA.
It can be done, but not the way you want to go.
So either we go back to the Party, AA come to us, or we are out of luck for a while.

I don't think it would be too hard over the long term to let
people from all ethnic backgrounds to get on board, particularly the younger, more secular crowd.
The older ones, particularly in the south that get their politics from their church we really shouldn't devote a lot of our limited time and resources to courting. I say this at the risk of sounding dickish, but the truth is the only way we can hope to sway them is by swaying their kids and grandkids and asking them to have the conversation with them for us.
They will trust their church before they trust some idealists, except maybe if that idealist is someone they already personally know and love.
This really is going to have to start grass roots and stay focused on that direction even when it grows past the point where it may seem no longer completely necessary.
It IS doable, but its gonna take a lot of us a lot of dedicated time and work in order to do so...

I don't think I can agree with the wording. We didn't cost her
she and her supporters cost us the election.
Clinton's supporters had some success in claiming Bernie wasn't a good candidate in part because he couldn't win a certain age demographic of the black vote. But they didn't say "we blacks cost Bernie the nomination". They said, "Bernie didn't earn our vote." They added a bunch of insults like "because he's a racist and not really a friend, just like his privileged white male supporters", too, but those were just egregious, nasty invectives outside the main point.
I think we need to reinforce that wording, because it makes it less tenable a position to blast us without also blasting minorities. And when there is push back, point this out.

Hillary herself re-inforced this impression by not allowing her speeches to Wall Street insiders to be released. She also confused voters with her quote about "pleading guilty" to being "kind of moderate and center" which stood in direct contrast to her assertion of "taking a back seat to no one" in her progressiveness.
Her spokesperson shrugged off the loss as being the fault of "the little people" who failed to possess the sophistication required of todays voters to accept opaqueness, contradiction and dueling public and private faces as a necessary ingredient for a successful politician. "They're fucking morons and now I'm out of a job, that's all I know" said the spokesperson as they jumped into an Uber and headed to the airport.

I really like this awesome idea.
I know that I, for one, could do this with a straight face in any social setting. But I am absolutely certain that most people would not be able to "stay on message" because they would not be comfortable with, or able to internalize the notion that they were responsible for the results of the election. As we say in the trade, "They would not be able to stay in character."
Owning It, is not in the nature of the progressives I have known this past half century. It is just not going to happen. But, thanks for the fantasy thought . . .

It is also being reported that from exit polling 9% voting for Trump claimed to be Dems, While 7% voting for HRC claimed to be repugs. Since they both got about same number of votes that would also give Trump a 2% bump.

I'm usually not an emotional person, but freely admit that I teared up just a tiny bit after watching this video (and no, it wasn't tears of laughter, all you cruel people!).

Just think of the profound awfulness poor Hillary is experiencing right now. She's been shooting for the Presidency almost literally since she was in kindergarten, for Chrissake! All the maneuvering, the scheming, the intrigue, the impatiently waiting in the wings, all the lies told, the bribes taken, dirty deals made, expendable allies back-stabbed or thrown under the bus, gullible voters manipulated and misled, brown people killed, brutalized and enslaved, ecosystems destroyed... and now, all for naught. You'd have to be made of stone not to feel a little bit of sympathy for the poor thing.
It kind of reminds me of the scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy accidentally throws water on the green-skinned lady, destroying her beautiful wickedness. Granted, the WWOTW was not an altogether good person, and definitely had some very unfortunate qualities, but still, you couldn't help but be a little bit affected by her untimely passing, and the sense of tragic and unexpected loss.
So here's to you, Hills. At this moment I'm raising a glass in your honor. A toast to your beautiful wickedness. Even people who are evil, corrupt, malignant, dishonest, reckless, vindictive, irresponsible, dangerous, and generally rotten deserve a little bit of sympathy when they crash and burn, right?
