Dr. Flowers (G. Maryland) crashes Senatorial debate!
Allowing on a debate platform everyone who wants to (a) run for office or (b) participate in a political debate for some other reason is not a good idea, in my opinion. Right now, I don't know what all the criteria should be and don't want to hold up this blog entry until I think it through. However, surely, if you manage to get yourself on the ballot, despite all the obstacles Democratic and Republican legislators set up, you should be allowed to participate in a debate for that office.
This was the position of Dr. Margaret Flowers, Green Party candidate for Senator of Maryland, when she crashed a debate being held between Third Way/New Democrat Congressional Rep. Chris Van Hollen and his Republican opponent, Kathy Szeliga. (Szeliga supported opening the debate to Flowers while Van Hollen remained silent.) Spoiler alert: Flowers was physically escorted out of the venue. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/2016-senate-race/bs-m...
I have admired Dr. Margaret Flowers' goals since I first saw her on PBS' Bill Moyers Journal, talking about getting arrested in the (lawful) service of Medicare for all.

Dr. Flowers:
Flowers views the struggle for health care as part of a broader social, economic and environmental justice movement. She joined Kevin Zeese in March, 2011 as co-director of ItsOurEconomy.us in order to educate, organize and mobilize around social and economic justice issues and democratization of the economy to reduce the wealth divide. She served on the steering committee of October2011.org which organized the Occupation of Washington, DC on Freedom Plaza and continues to report on and help organize events around the country through PopularResistance.org. She co-hosts,Clearing the FOG radio which airs on We Act Radio, 1480 AM and is published regularly in TruthOut, Alternet and AlJazeera English. She has appeared in local, national and international media. Her twitter is @MFlowers8.

Rep. Van Hollen
Van Hollen was born in Karachi, Pakistan, the eldest of three children of American parents, Edith Eliza (née Farnsworth) and Christopher Van Hollen.[3][4] His father was a Foreign Service officer who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs (1969–72) and U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives (1972–76);[5] and his mother worked in the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department, where she served as chief of the intelligence bureau for South Asia.
Van Hollen worked as a legislative assistant for defense and foreign policy to U.S. Senator Charles Mathias, a Republican from Maryland, from 1985 to 1987

I rest my case.
In a nation whose 2016 population is 324,118,787, we need more than two choices. Nothing has shown that more than the Presidential contest of 2016, where a large majority of Americans polled dislike and distrust the candidates of both the largest political parties. Some big keys to getting more than two choices are access to the ballot and access to the debates. Please tweet your support to Dr. Flowers and do anything else you can think of to let people know we want the debates opened up to everyone who has managed to make it to the ballot--and we want easier ballot access, too!
I think we should start agitating in our respective states to change ballot access laws starting in January 2017. (You should have a lot more clout with your state rep. than with your Congressional rep., unless all you're after is a flag that has flown over the Capitol building.)
If you have specific suggestions on how to make our voices heard on this, beyond tweeting Dr. Flowers, I eagerly welcome them.
Thank you.

More choices, more democracy.
It seems like a reliably liberal state, Maryland, has two neoliberals(at best) running for office.
On the ballot, at the dais, in my view.

More choices, less corruption. Or so one hopes.
I met Margaret Flowers at The People's Convention
She was the driving force behind drafting our healthcare platform. Warm, wonderful, intelligent woman. Proud to have had the chance to meet her in person.

Nice! That came across, even on Bill Moyers' Journal.
I try hard not to get into hero worship. As best I can tell, nothing good comes of it. But, she is something else!
"I rise on behalf of the American people who believe that money
is not speech, corporations are not people, and our democracy should not be for sale to the highest bidder"
- Kai Newark, to the assembled Supreme Court Justices while they were making oral arguments. His opinion piece in the Guardian, "I stood up to the supreme court. It just struck down democracy. What now?" is here.
This is exactly what we need more of in this country. Just what Margaret Flowers did. What Kai Newark did. What the pissed-off, rabble-rousing commoners in Boston did in that harbor so many years ago. It's the same spirit.
We need to literally fucking crash their hallowed halls for the bullshit they are, literally.
It's way past time for massive, ingenious and widespread civil disobedience. #ShutItDown. But let's also have some fun doing it (thanks Abbie!)

At about 1:17 minutes in (lest people get discouraged).
Thanks for that. Profiles in Courage. That award has gone downhill in recent years. I guess because so few in politics these days exhibit courage.
I'm all for civil disobedience and fun. And snacks, too!
I've been civilly disobeying for years, but I won't post details about that, given the NSA.
I vote for little pigs in a blanket
Seems apropos given our options.

If I can get organic pigs and make my own blankets, I guess.
I am not much for added chemicals.
It's not about health food and I'm not vegan. I am fine with things like Haagen Daz strawberry ice cream and Cape Cod waffle chips, for example. I just hate paying for carcinogens to be added to my food. That cuts down on the variety of prepared foods I can buy.
Trader Joes
Makes a "healthier" version. Pups Puffs. No nitrates and they wrap it up in a mini croissant. Cutest little things you've ever seen. Lol.

Pastry Pups. Pups Puffs is a doggie treat.

I just checked out the ingredients and they do meat my standards. (See what I did there?)

That's not easy, because there are some products with all natural ingredients I won't buy. (Bearing in mind that locust poop is "natural.")
Oh gosh
That's pretty funny. I definitely didn't mean the doggie treats!
Kidding aside, I can fully appreciate your concerns over eating frankenfood. My Sister, who is a registered dietitian and struggled with food allergies for years, used to teach healthy cooking classes to kids before she went on disability. Watching her struggle with eating out (so many things on restaurant menus you can't trust if you have allergies) and educating not only the children, but their parents, of what is in our food and how food can be our poison or our medicine has had a profound effect on the way I eat and look at food. So we are definitely in agreement on that.
Still, every now and again, I do enjoy popping a pastry pup.

Pastry pups seem fine to me, but
I am not trying to eat healthy, other than to avoid added chemicals.
When I go out to eat, I just pretend everything meets my standards, especially if it tastes very good. I am ruthless when I food shop, though. I have checked the ingredients on everything on my grocery list. There is one candy bar that I purposely have not checked out, though, because I' sure they ingredients are awful. But I can't give it up yet.
WAY past time to #ShutItDown
It has to be daily, if not more. And it has to be relentless, but it also needs to be done with the understanding that you might go to jail for doing it. At this point, it has to be worth it. And I believe it is. Thanks for noting it, Mark...
