Bookmark this page. It may save your life in a future hurricane

As usual, I am quivering with frustration at the way Hurricane Matthew is being covered. In hurricanes, most lives are lost from STORM SURGE, not wind damage. The Categories 1,2,3, etc. are important for their winds speeds, both for immediate damage, but more importantly by how much force water is being pushed into inlets, bays, rivers, etc.

People, you can't "ride out" storm surge. If your area goes under water, possibly so does your house, or you find yourself sitting on your roof if you're lucky.

I find that this is covered so inadequately. The second a hurricane is announced for your area, you want to look at this page, the SLOSH maps which are created by the National weather service to paint a worst case scenario of hurricane categories coinciding with a high tide. You can take it down to street level.

Storm surge can go miles inland, it has nothing to do with whether you live right on the beach or not. It has nothing to do with how well-built your house is or whether you feel like dealing with the hassle of traffic. It has to do with whether you drown or not.

When hurricane Matthew was first predicted as a monster, IMO ALL of the national and local weatherpeople should have promoted the SLOSH map tool or any variants. Too often the weather droids keep discussing "surge" without discussing the real local impact. They need to show zoom maps and say without equivocation, "this area is at risk of going under, and so is this one." They need to say "imagine your house in the middle of eleven feet of water with no power and ask yourself if you want to stay there." Police cars with bullhorns need to go through at risk areas and tell the people that storm surge could put the neighborhood under.

I hope all are safe out there. If you're in Florida or Georgia or South Caroline, my thoughts and prayers are with you for the best possible outcome.

They should do a little more development on it and adapt it to also check for potential effects on local coastline from global warming .

To all C99s in Matthew's path, Good luck and stay safe and dry.

of the surge coming in and coinciding with high tide. But, IMO Matthew is such a slow moving storm that it makes a double whammy. It's shoveling water for a prolonged period instead of a quick pass over AND I think there is a lot of moisture associated with Matthew as rain as well.

I am seeing a lot of conflicting information on the TeeVee, primarily CNN. The anchors were telling people in areas that had not been hit as of yet and were on the fringes to still get out while they can, the roads were clear, etc. But then a mayor came on and said "No it's too late, they have to shelter in place now " because I think she said they were shutting down the bridges. I swear the anchor who was reporting in one of those areas, had this look cross his face like "Whadya mean, it's too late? " clearly thinking that he himself was bugging out soon.

I heard someone else say that because there was now a lot debris and electrical wires down, etc. that the chance of evacuating successfully at this point was not likely which was a good point.

Rick Scott scare mongered "this storm will kill you" but I thought it was unsuccessful in that he didn't detail HOW the storm would kill - with storm surge and flooding. He should have had a 9ft pole or something.

We should all be a lot better with this stuff by this time - preliminary planning and education, and evacuation. I think what we have to do is educate the kids in their physical sciences classes about hurricanes and storm surges.

literally, like gone. I have been on the beach at Daytona, that barrier island had high rise condos as well as hotels. That historic beach is likely gone, off to sea. Major hit to insurance companies, but bigger to residents. Oh, my. Like a big scrubbie running up FL.

It's not "scare mongering" if it's the simple, honest, unembellished truth. Which it is.

By the time Governor Scott said this, Hurricane Matthew had already killed. Hundreds. So it was no scare mongering. This storm will kill you.

someone can register as being unable to evacuate without aid in event of a hurricane - could be elderly, could be disabled, could be poor, shouldn't have to state the reason. This list should be provided to Red Cross, FEMA, the police, the fire people, volunteer associations, civic leagues, etc.

Could also have a list at the post office or turn it into your mail carrier for people without internet access.

People also need to know in advance what public buildings are designated as shelters in event of an emergency.

But nothing is effective unless it is done well in advance.

Figures it's the Guardian right? My go to papers now are the Guardian for good coverage and then the Daily Mail for the frivolous stuff.

220K. Creepy manipulation going on? I sport a black eye now, done by a fall by me, no one else involved. Shitty life events for me, always multiples.

Last I heard, before a long nap was she (Matthew) was offshore Daytona beach, the Atlantic barrier islands of FL may be gone now.

in my borough and the city during Sandy. I don't know if the city explained and educated the citizens because I never pay close attention but I really did not know much about it. I was shocked and heartbroken at the number of people drowned in what they thought were sturdy and safe homes. (I am not irresponsible, like my landlord likes to say, we live in a fortress on the highest point on the Atlantic seaboard. )

Pawleys Island Police Chief Mike Fanning says the forms are not new, but officials have not had to use them because they haven’t had a mandatory evacuation in more than 10 years.

In the little bit of coverage I have seen, they have pressed EXACTLY this point. They even had a live shot of the national weather center where the head meteorologist spoke to this point extemporaneously. Maybe I just caught them at a good time (9 pm MDT ish).

Checking in from east central FL. We dodged a BIG NASTY one. Beachside made it. Flagler and Volusia counties did get some damage but nothing catastrophic. Brevard came through, too. I hate these storms. Excellent response to mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders. I skipped Scott when he came on. UGH! Rec'd!!

We are up in the boonies between St. Augustine and Palm Coast, just west of I-95, and we finally just got our power back (was out since overnight Thursday/Friday); I am in shock at how completely lucky we were here, because it's like Tree City back here--our road out to the main road was cleared almost immediately by some awesome neighbors--yet we are still intact. Apparently we fell in between some nasty bands of storm, and thankful for it. We lost three trees, our shed and exactly one shingle off our house. We had a generator so we didn't lose food from the fridge/freezer, but said generator is on its last legs, so we were a little worried at how long it might hold out (so I made lots of ice besides--frozen 16 oz waters come in real handy!)

St. Augustine took a serious pounding with flood surge, but mostly everything and everybody made it through there. Friends in Palm Coast, Daytona and Ormond Beaches have a lot of trees down, still no power to many. Ormond Beach had multiple water line breaches and so they're under a "boil water" advisory until further notice. A1A between Flagler Beach and Ormond by the Sea is severely washed out in places--this is about a 10-12 mile stretch between the two towns, but there's a lot of people living there, so there are going to be some serious detours going on for quite some time.

It could have been so much worse...I was saying many prayers for folks in Georgia and SC coasts. That's still as close as I ever want to get to a big storm like that...ugh...

Another (ex )Bernie supporter refugee from The Orange Place.

We were so damn lucky with Hugo ( a Cat 5 ) veering east just before it devastated Charleston in Sept. of 89. I was volunteering with the Red Cross in the weeks following. It's hard to describe just how destructive storm surge can be.

With our normal 8-9 ft tide change,...it looks pretty bleak for about half the Island tonight.
The steel and concrete building here at work is a beast and still has power ,..... all our guests (tourist ) had to evacuate Wed. ,.....

Would be foolish and dangerous to " ride " this particular storm out in a residential structure on any barrier island here in the Lowcountry.

One Floridian was most upset that his friends and neighbors stayed put while the hurricane did its damage. He left. I didn't catch the context, but he was angry about being "punished" for listening to the warnings. He clearly didn't see the pictures taken in the 9th Ward after Katrina.

From what I can tell from Weather Underground, etc. there will be extensive flooding from northern Virginia all the way down. Norfolk is expecting over a foot of rain. Lots of rain in lots of places and the rivers can't discharge the water into the ocean because with the storm, the sea level is higher than the river mouths. So the water collects where it falls. The hill country is awash with flash floods and there are likely to be more. Bad news all around.
