It Seems Really Dumb to Post This, But...
There have been too many people who are shocked/surprised when they actually meet me or talk to me on the phone, and find out I am not a 28-year-old man with olive skin.

And while you're at it, rent Firefly and watch it too.

So who am I?
I am a white woman, 48 years old, Florida native. I'm a (mostly) out-of-work English PhD who occasionally teaches Business Writing at the local community college and is wondering about other kinds of teaching (Montessori teaching, prison education.)
I gave up the possibility of a tenured academic career by running off after Howard Dean and John Kerry to save the country. Dumbest decision of my life. Okay, I'm confessing too.
I'm not a dawg or THE Snoopy dawg, or any of the photos I occasionally post.
I'm a tad older than you and used to be an ophthalmic photographer in my previous life. My greatest accomplishment because I taught myself ophthalmology which was difficult because of the head injury I was still recovering from.
And today's my birthday. The first one since my mom died which did a big number on me last night.

(DD wrote an incredible diary that helped heal the wounds of many people who had lost loved ones to the AIDS epidemic after Hillary's statement about how Nancy Reagan did so much for the people who had AIDS.)

My aunt, uncle and two cousins who were visiting from California had a great birthday dinner at my aunt's house last night. We talked about all the fun memories we had of my mom who was everyone's favorite cousin and the rest of the relatives who are no longer with us and we had such a fun time.
Then it hit me when I got home that she wouldn't be calling me today to wish me happy birthday.
A wee jolt to the system, but my two doggies bring such joy how could I be sad for long?

I did have a great time with my family last night. I haven't seen these two cousins since 1994 when my great aunt flew my brother out from Utah to Santa Rosa and so many of the cousins came to say goodbye to him. He was in the end stage of AIDS and just like last night, we had such a fun time together.
On Tuesday, another cousin was traveling through our city and my aunt and I had breakfast with her.
All 3 of them did a double take when they saw me because they said that I look just like my mom.
Yesterday it had been 8 months since she died, but she had a series of strokes that while they weren't the devastating type, each one took a little more of her personality away.
The week before she died her husband asked if she wanted to go to some place next week and she smiled at him and said that she didn't think that she would be here next week. And she was okay with it.
She had another stroke and when she had a MRI she said she had just watched a great video with pretty music and saw my brother and her parents.
The day she died my aunt called and said that she had gone and since she was going to be cremated, I wanted to say goodbye. Imagine my surprise when I got to the hospital and she was alive.
The staff couldn't find a pulse or heartbeat so they noted time of death.
5 minutes later her husband came out of her room and said she was breathing again.
Then my brother got there and 10 minutes later she left for good.
We believe that she waited for me and him to be able to say goodbye.
That's something my mom would have done

I saw my dead grandma in my room after we had put her in the ground when I was six. When I found a book about Harry and learned about him wanting to contact his beloved mother, I was hooked.
Will look up the series (?) you mentioned, because I loves me some Harry H!

i'm not into mysticism, but Yeats sure was. he was taken in, sort of, by the fairy hoax. he really wanted to believe in fairies.
on a time, rural folks in ireland preferred to believe that a lost child, rather than having likely drowned in the river or fallen into some hidden crack in the rocks somewhere, had been spirited off by the fair folk.
yeats wrote a poem/song about it, over the years the lyrics have been set to music by various musicians.
