Boycott the Debate
Submitted by Steven D on Mon, 09/26/2016 - 10:42am
This will be short and sweet.
There is no reason to boost the TV ratings of NBC for an event that will add nothing to the political discourse in this country.
You wanna watch reality TV shows, there are much better ones available.
These debates do not include Jill Stein and/or Gary Johnson so what value do they offer us? It's just free publicity for two very loathsome candidates who would rather attack one another then offer any real solutions to our world's very serious problems.
This debate and the ones to come are frankly just another part of the scam to give the appearance we live in a democracy and not an oligarchic tyranny.
Don't fall for the con.
Do something better with your time tonight.
That is all.

Not a tip Jar, just human error
by yours truly.
So, boycott the damn debate.

I hate these non-tip jars. I get them occasionally
When I'm writing an open thread, preview it and then save it I get an empty message. And it's hours before the thing's supposed to be published!
Anyway...the debate will go on, whether we watch it or not (I won't) and there'll be lots of summaries after the fact.
It reminds me of a sports event where you kind of are curious about the outcome but don't mind having something else to do while it's occurring .
What debate? n/t
Easy for me - no tv.
It's been years since I've had a tv or listened to radio news. I have never heard Trump speak for instance - Obama either since I think about it - so I'll not be adding to some networks bottom line.
I've lived most of my life without a tv - for a long time I lived in areas of the SW where no tv signals reached - and you don't miss what you're not used to having.

Since it was my anniversary yesterday, my husband and I decided to celebrate it tonight. One of the reasons is to make sure neither one of us accidentally turn on the debate. #JillnotHill

I might watch it for the horror. I've not watched much of this election season, I watched A debate. Civic duty and whatnot...
“Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.” ~ Sun Tzu
who would
know what you're watching anyhow? Unless you get polled or asked what you watched. I'd rather watch reruns of Death Valley Days with Ronnie Reagan pimping 20 Mule Team Borax than watch the freak show debates....
I remember those days ...
I'm glad you mentioned 20 mule team Borax! It has plenty of good uses.
Since the B-6 nucleus is an excellent neutron absorber, we used lots of it at the accelerator lab when doing (d,n) proton transfer reactions, which set loose munificent amounts of neutrons during the experiments, most which were absorbed by the boxes of Borax.
My very bright wife {E} had the brilliant idea of washing my underwear in lots of borax during our (d,n) runs, since high-energy (10+ MeV) neutrons can do unpleasant radiation damage to a gentleman's privates if not absorbed.
There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.
Well shit.
that went waaaaaay over my old head....
Some experiments can generate high energy neutrons.
Neutrons can be ionizing -- ie they're bad for your DNA.
Boron compounds are good neutron absorbers, as are lead bricks.
When we ran out of lead, we filled up the gaps with borax boxes.
The joke was washing one's underwear in a highly concentrated borax solution could keep the "family jewels" safe from radiation.
There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.
I am pissed that the Third Party candidates are not allowed
Instead of polling percentage as a qualifier, I think it should be whether the candidate appears on enough ballots across the country to actually win the electoral votes required for victory. That will never happen under our current two party system.
As for Trump and Clinton, I would be more interested in seeing them kept in separate locations and answering the SAME questions. Then I would like them to see the other one's response in order to deliver a rebuttal. Now that would be interesting.

That would actually be a debate!

What I would like to watch
would be if someone did it in a Celebrity Deathmatch format. Remember that show? I think it was MTV, it featured Claymations of celebrities fighting each other and it was hilarious in a Grand Guignol sort of way. I can imagination the oofs and spins and kicks and hairpieces coming off and other mayhem - all in good fun, of course!
" “Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough.” FDR "
I was just talking about that last night when the debate came up
in a conversation with a friend.
We both agreed that a Celebrity DeathMatch between Clinton and Trump would be fun (Real or Clay.)
It ended up with me googling this Classic Clinton Deathmatch between Lewinsky and Clinton.
Not one of the best ones, but relevant.
Supposedly they are rebooting the series on MTV 2, but that was announced in 2015 and I don't think I have heard anything since. (Link is to announcement and a top 10 list of CDM episodes. )

Damn PBS...
No Antiques Roadshow...
About as bad as 'Pledge Week'
Guess I can watch American Pickers or Ancient Ailiens on History.
Alien conspiracy theories are alot better than 'American Kabuki' on NBC.
I want a Pony!
Go with Ancient Aliens.
Or go with Viceland Network, they have a show where Action Bronson and friends get high and watch Ancient Aliens. Melissa Etheridge has been on the show. Much better than Her Heinous vs. The Donald.

Finding Bigfoot
Now that would be a show to watch while getting high, except not with a meth-head as they'd get paranoid when the bigfoot stalkers start saying, "what was that!? Did you hear that!? That was a knock! That was a howl!" and then they'd freakout and start chasing you with a butcher knife but they'd freakout if they were watching Ancient Aliens also, or Ice Road Truckers or Antiques Roadshow so don't watch TV with a meth-head...

For my own sanity, I don't plan to watch.
But I wonder if anyone will notice?
"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."--Napoleon
I'm afraid that if I look at Clinton's smug face too long
my eyeballs will start to melt down my face, so I'm not watching either.
Amy Goodman is hosting an expanded debate on Democracy Now! like she did in 2012, with the two third-party candidates added in to the debate feed, and able to answer the questions as well. I want to give her some kudos for that but don't want to watch, as stated above. I fear my eyeballs will start to melt and I will bleed from the ears.
So my partner came up with a great solution: put Democracy Now! up on your computer and walk away from it. Goodman gets whatever good numbers come from lots of people watching her livestream, and my face remains intact.

Amy Goodman and DN! for me, too.
LinkTV and FreespeechTV are also broadcasting Democracy Now! And their panel. I plan to record it and fast forward the Hell outta the actual debate (unless I see an actual meltdown as I fly by - that I might check out) and make it safely to the panel with eyeballs and blood pressure intact.
May your eyeballs ever remain intact

Turns out that the Jill Stein portion of the debate
will be tomorrow, so I don't have to watch Democracy Now! at all tonight, nor even put it up on my computer and walk away.

No way does our TV signal rest on that channel this day
Both filthy, corrupt parties can fuck off right alone with their disgusting, crooked "candidates". No way we are helping them generate a bit of profit so they can continue financing this sham of an election.
Tell us how you really feel..
eom
I want a Pony!
OK!
Heh. I'd much rather be watching baseball, though our "local" feed here tonight is the Florida Marlins vs. the NY Mets and it's very sad, too--but in a completely different, human way
I am compelled to skip it
because I simply can't stand to hear the sound of either of the voices of the two candidates.
Even the smallest person can change the course of the future
Cheaper than ipecac
But seriously I'm going to tune in for at least 5 minutes if not the whole thing. I want to witness myself, not rely on the interpretations of others.
'Sides, Trump could win and the "winning" the debates are crucial to him in that goal.
Nothing really to learn from it
It will be a big ahow about keeping us ignorant. Trump will "win" because he's a better showman. We already know that the PTB consider this election to be about themselves and not us.
Beware the bullshit factories.
The kids are smart
My 6 year old grandson told me this morning that he won't vote for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. I told him I won't either. His dad is having a small debate watch party tonight because he and his ex father-in-law consider it will be a circus.
I'm tempted to watch, but only to see if she collapses
or flies into a rage.
But then if she does, someone will put it on YouTube, won't they?
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
I'll wait and watch it on youtube
Over and over and over
Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur.
Yes, if anything big happens, it will be replayed over and over
So I'll catch it on the reruns.
I don't think of my not watching the
debateshow tonight as boycotting it, as that seems to imply I would have watched but refrain as a protest, when the truth is that I couldn't be less interested, and I simply can't stand to listen to either of them, especially Hillary. Her voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard. If something happens that is worth seeing, like she makes a grand, unrecoverable error, I'll watch the clips online. As I said in another essay,
I will be waiting for the reviews. Why watch when I can enjoy the comedy show later on the internet? My favorite web sites will all be full of analysis. Some of you here might be full of analysis. I don't have teevee and will not watch or listen on any other device. My time will be well spent on something that actually brings me joy.

I don't watch her, but I have caught snippet. Hillarybot or die is the impression I got.
"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."--Napoleon
Hillarybot? Really?
Having watched the entire run of Full Frontal so far they have been balanced in their criticism of both Clinton & Sanders during the primary.
Certainly better than John Oliver's BS last night, that's for sure, deceitful in his refusal to acknowledge that in many instances the Clinton Foundation was paid so that HRC would not obstruct a project, not that she would be a rain maker, although she did plenty of that in arms deals.
Hillarybot? Leave the othering at DK please.
Sex or a bong?

"I like the way you think" Now that reminds me of an old joke.
Totally tasteless (as all the "Little Johnny Jokes" tend to be) but since we will probably be imbibing even more tasteless things in just a bit think of this as an inoculation.
I like the way you think:
Little Johnny was sitting in class doing math problems when his teacher picked him to answer a question, "Johnny, if there were five birds sitting on a fence and you shot one with your gun, how many would be left?" "
None," replied Johnny, "cause the rest would fly away."
"Well, the answer is four," said the teacher, "but I like the way you think."
Little Johnny says, "I have a question for you. If there were three women eating ice cream cones in a shop, one was licking her cone, the second was biting her cone and the third was sucking her cone, which one is married?"
"Well," said the teacher nervously, "I guess the one sucking the cone."
"No," said Little Johnny, "the one with the wedding ring on her finger, but I like the way you think."
"I used to vote Republican & Democrat, I also used to shit my pants. Eventually I got smart enough to stop doing both things." -Me
LOL!
You should tell jokes all through this thing. Hope you've got a lot!

I have absolutely no interest in hearing either candidate speak,
let alone debate anybody let alone each other. This absolute lack of interest guarantees that I will not watch, but it is hard to call it a boycott. I don't boycott things I am allergic to, for example, though I also don't consume them.

my prediction for the debate
Moderator: FSC, where will you meet Putin and how will you prepare for the meeting?
Hillary: I suppose I could stay home and bake cookies
Moderator: Trumpy, what about LGBTQ?
Trump: I think it's great when people are in love, like Hillary and her wife Huma
(Hillary gives crazy look)
Trump: Oh, I thought you were a lesbian.
Moderator: Hills, your "trust" ratings are as bad as Trumpy's. Why do you think that is?
Hills: (cackles....coughs) Anyone who doesn't trust me is deplorable. What's really deplorable is that in 2016 women are seen as untrustworthy. And aren't paid as much as men. We created 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling. We came, we saw, he died (cackles)
Moderator: Trumpolini, you stiffed lots of vendors while you declared bnkruptcy and you paid personal expenses from your campaign money. Are you a crook?
Trumpy: I've got a foundation which does good work, much like the Clinton Foundation, run by Hillary and her wife Huma.
and so on for 90 #$%&^ing minutes.
OMG! Right now the talking heads are role-playing responses
for Hillary on the Andrea Mitchell show! They are working out and re-enacting what pitches they think will work and be sympathetic for her in an email response. Lol! They think "privacy" is the horse she should ride. Yes, pundits that should satisfy everyone. Oh, she wanted privacy, why didn't she just say so?

Her Heinious only wanted Billy and the folks at CGF to know where she'd be traveling, so they could sync their trips, get money from people she'd be meeting for the CGF, or else, she wouldn't meet them.
My favorite might still be the $16,000,000. Billy got over 3 1/2 years from the Laureate For Profit School, founded by his friend, who Her Heinious had Joe Duffy ( he of their board too, and ex head of USIA during Clinton administration) speak at State with them. Billy did zilch, but then, $16 million isn't really money to them anymore.
Can't stand her voice, so won't watch, not even on mute, tho I am, full confession, curious to see what kind of schmata long coat with potholder pockets she's gonna be wearing behind her special made podium so she doesn't look like as much of a toadstool as she usually does. Big Fail expected on that.
She's what 5' 2", and he's 6' 3". What a joke.
Privacy

Five Thirty-Eight this morning.
Another big fall for Clinton. If Johnson wasn't in the race Trump would be in like Flynn. And, of course, the Electoral College pretty much has devalued most votes. If you are a Clinton supporter and live on the West Coast you don't really have a say in the matter. Places like Florida, Ohio will decide. If Colorado flips it's over. Maybe it wasn't her turn.
When I hear either of them talk I feel the need to take a shower. Hell, I'd rather watch the Falcons-Saints game. Or maybe I'll open a bottle of scotch and drink in the dark.
But does anyone think that we won't get the wars the ruling elite wants? Clinton is on top of the agenda, has probably written much of it. Trump will get to hold the royal scepter and the MIC will get their wars.
Or, think about really important things....
who will be the Patriot quarterback for the last game, before Tom Brady returns.
Winning them all, as the quarterbacks, each one of them, have been injured.
Bill Belichick for POTUS.

No, no, no.

Shameless plug: Instead I'll be watching "A Very Secret Service" on Netflix. It's hard to describe. It sort of does for France and French colonialism in the 60's what Hogan's Heroes did for the Germans, only in the setting of a spy-vs-spy workplace sit-com. The French thought they were the good guys. This show fixes that.

Actually, there are such: parodies of reality TV, such as Silent Library, Fear Factor, and Jackass. Of course, anyone watching these has to approach them with the idea that these are parodies; if you take 'em seriously, you're hosed, but as parodies, they make excellent farcical comedy!

If . . .
any of you change your mind about watching, Democracy Now will be streaming it on their website, and they've invited Jill Stein and Gary Johnson for a discussion afterwards. So if you are just a little curious . . . that would probably be the best place to watch.
I might be interested in the "afterwards." Thanks for the
information. DemocracyNow is a treasure.

they'll replay the debate and let her answer the questions from her own podium. Gary Johnson was also invited but turned them down. Unless there's some serious personal reason, like illness or death in the family, he just took a shovel to any respect I had for him.

Jill & Co. are planning to use periscope to "insert" herself into the debates, where she responds to the questions as well as the Other Two. I'm hoping somebody does a video of all this and posts it on youtube.
I sent Gary Johnson a tweet and suggested that he join her in her bootleg debate spectacle. I think a 4-way would be awesome.
Anyway, the site above explains where to watch live tonight.
Life is strong. I'm weak, but Life is strong.
This is what I'm planning to do.
I just wish there was some way to watch/read Jill's answers without having to see/hear the other two. Shudder....

ack, I think you should go and demonstrate outside
of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, the site of tonights debate. When the debate starts at 9 p.m., Stein's campaign says she will "participate live in the debate on social media". So, I think, whoever can, should support her protest in real space. May be even be so courageous and occupy the debate. Ooops, did I say occupy?
I don't know, if not watching the debate, is even recognized as a boycott. I understand your emotions, but I think it's like not voting out of protest. Nobody gives a damn if you not vote. There are others who do, and you can't do anything against it. It has no effect on the outcome. One of the two will be elected. Did you see that google today has an image asking to register to vote? Really.
Sorry Steven, I watch it online, when, I don't know yet. Can't run away from it, just because it's being a vain happening. Want to make my own judgment and not wait for the "social media" to tell me.
So, I urge you to go to protest outside the debate facility, en mass. That's the only thing that would make some sense to me.
