Long years ago........
2009 actually, a small little soul joined our family.
Here in Minnesota, we get snow storms. March, 2009, and we're told that the cold and the snow are coming back for us. Mrs Bollox and close friend have gone walking and tell of a small grey and white cat, seemingly without a place to shelter.
We go out in the dark and try and find the beast, but to no avail. One last time, I trek North up the block and spot her. Comes to my call and I pick her up and walk a few paces, but she complains, so I put her down. Off I walk, and off she follows. So I pick her up again. A few paces and she complains, so I put her down again, walk on, and off she follows.
In this manner, we find a safe warm spot for her in our garage.
Storm survived. Friends forever.

They bring such a warm fuzzy
They bring such a warm fuzzy feeling, although it sometimes gets in your food as well... but the ones that pick you are always the best.

No critter should be homeless.
It pisses me off that people don't fix their animals. Somewhere I read that the Netherlands didn't have any stray cats or dogs because they all had homes.
Your kitty is cute. S/he looks happy.

Totally agree as to the homes and fixing the pets.
In 2005 my son asked me if I could adopt a cat with a sad history. His original humans had brought him from the west coast to NYC and when they decided NY wasn't the place for them the cat got left behind. The roommates took care of him but when they decided to have a baby the poor cat no longer fit in their family.
I am not an animal person and I am allergic to attachments but I took the cat in. My heart could not handle a poor creature being rejected over and over. When I got the cat I promised him we would be together until one of us died.
Poor cat was way overweight and very distrustful. I never put him on a diet but just eating halfway decent food he lost eight pounds within a few months. About as long as it took for him to allow me to hold him.
He also was much older than I had been told. But he was with me for ten years and we loved each other to pieces. Having him euthanized two years ago was the most painful thing I have ever done.
About that promise: when the cat was being an asshole, as cat will many times do, my sister, who has six cats, four dogs, several horses and two goats, would tease me and say " Remember, til death does you part."
Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur.
That is not a tease.
My sister has demanded that if I die, she has dibs on my pup.

We think that Purfleet's situation was a result of a foreclosure
We asked around about ownership, but nobody responded. The vet said she was in fine shape. Perhaps someone had to rapidly leave, and hoped she would find a new home.

Can't imagine leaving without them
My little lion and his two sisters, the brown girls, say "mrowr" to Purfleet. (Translation: "Hello".)
Speaking of having to leave rapidly, the brown girls were in their carriers in the back seat of my car when we made our great escape from Katrina on the evening of 8/28/2005. That's all I had time to bring with me. One change of clothing and the cats. I'm trying to imagine the circumstances under which I'd move out and leave my critters behind.

I can't imagine
Making a choice like that. There was a PBS program about parrots a year or two ago, and they showed a cockatoo who had been left behind when people moved out. There sat his big cage in the middle of a room, fortunately with a window, so someone saw him. There was a bag of dog food, and this bird knew how to let himself out of the cage, so survived on that. Someone saw him and he was rescued. I just cannot imagine doing such a thing. We had a nearby neighbor who first had 2 cockatiels, then acquired 2 budgies. One day, there was only one cockatiel left. The owner told us that the landlord had entered while he was gone, and "killed the birds". Of course, it had nothing to do with the pit bull he left while away..... We told him that we understood that birds are a lot of work and messy, that we knew a bird rescue that would take him. Shortly after that, my husband walked by and noticed that there was a water container tipped over on the floor, but no sign of any water, outside a filthy cage. We got the landlord and animal control; they found the cockatiel and also a gecko in an aquarium. The tenant had skipped and left them to die. I just don't understand how someone could do such a thing.
My sister acquired her first cockatiel when he walked to her
house. She rescued him back from the bird rescuer after no claims. She has another guy, Rufus, now. He lives in her kitchen, Dogs like him.

Thank You
For caring about this little one. We live in MN too, and have worried about little creatures when winter approaches, too. Since we fed outdoor birds, we also had squirrels. Who would ever think I could tell one squirrel from another? Oh, yes, can tell them all apart, by name, on pictures of those we knew long ago. With some winters, there would be at least one with terrible mange, and my husband was actually able to get hold of one who had so little fur left, it hurt to look at her, in the cold depth of January, and take her to the Wildlife Rehab. It is truly incredible how much those people try to do for animals, bless them.
I always thought I was not a cat person. Until this orange tabby began to hang around the back yard. He would eat, but more than hunger drove him, he wanted people and he wanted to come in. We had a new canary at the time, and Buster Kitten had a baby starling in his mouth when I first saw him. So, he came in, and stayed upstairs while the canary was downstairs. It was so obvious that he had been loved and cared for, and we really tried to find his owner, without luck. My sister worked with a woman who had recently lost her orange tabby to cancer. She saw Buster Kitten's picture and really wanted to meet him. She came over, and he went right to her lap--it was clearly a match. He lived, with her, another 15 years--now this lady was a real cat person, and her cats ruled the house! She periodically sent us pictures, one was her 3 cats, each on a stool in front of a TV, watching bird videos.....
Yes, friends forever. Feels good, doesn't it?

Gotta love the critters
One of the best bumper stickers I've seen is the paw print with the phrase" who rescued who".
What a beautiful tale
of love at first sight, even if it was touch and go at first. Almost like a dance of acquaintance. Thanks Bollox. I'll never forget your photos of her at your window and on your table.
She's the sweetest cat
but more reserved than our affable, large lump, Oscar.
She's also the most talkative cat I've ever met, and seems to have a particular sound for just about everything.

People who abandon pets should be HUGE consequences.
Pets, like kids, are a commitment. If you can't take care of them, you put them up for adoption and find them a good home. You don't throw them out of the car window. Anyone who abandons, not rehomes, a pet for any reason is an asshole in my book. The only possible circumstance where it might HAVE TO BE is a natural disaster. Animals, all of them, have feelings. No one will ever convince me otherwise. We have a responsibility to protect and treat them right.
