What could be more important than voting?
Submitted by don mikulecky on Tue, 08/16/2016 - 11:35am
The answer should be simple but due to the spell elections cast on people's minds it seems not to be. We now have had the hottest month recorded history. Meanwhile very little is being done to keep it from getting much worse. Can you deal with this?
This will be short because it has been said and ignored too many times. "Ignored" you say? Not me! I'm a good guy. I vote the right way and do all things green things. Guess what? I mean YOU.
The situation is getting worse and the rate at which it is is accelerating and you are part of the problem. Yes, I know, The republican dummies and the corporations and....and.....
Guess what? EVERYONE must change drastically and do it now. Enough said.

How about we do both?
Vote for Green Party AND conserve our resources? Beginning with our water use and cutting down on our waste products. Too much packaging. Too much plastic. Too much everything. We are a wasteful, wasteful, consumers.

you really think that is the answer?
I don't think you understand the problem and its magnitude
An idea is not responsible for who happens to be carrying it at the time. It stands or it falls on its own merits.
What is your answer then?
I teach global warming and climate change quarter after quarter and semester after semester. I use the latest data for support. Unfortunately I still have to use gasoline to get to the students as do they to get to me. Mass transportation in MI sucks. Short of rounding up all the oligarchs and lopping off their heads, what do you propose?
Climate change is already upon us, we waited too long and still no one in our stupid government is taking it seriously. Brace yourselves.
the blog before this one answered that
What can be done?

I appreciate what you're saying,
but I still don't see an answer there. Short of just shutting it all down, right now, and letting millions of people die in the heat and cold and of starvation and disease, what specifically do you suggest? I'm in favor of a super fast transition to renewable energies and sustainability, but shutting off the main breaker on our society is a cure that will result in massive numbers of deaths. We have to have the energy shortfalls during transition rare and decreasing in number.
try reading what I posted...the answers are all there
why did you ignore them and then give your own ridiculous version of what I said?
You start by making the new system so people are taken care of!

You may be able to do something at the local level.
Most local government meetings are poorly attended, citizens don't care. If you mobilized even a small persistent group to go speak up for public transportation, you might be able to get something going there. I live in Lex, KY, and mass transportation is pretty good. I don't have a car, I walk or take the bus. If this little Southern town-city is outdoing you, MI should be ashamed.

all politics are local

I'm not entirely convinced of that. I think it's important who
the President is, for example. But bus service, definitely. Been there, done that. The buses are even electric hybrids donated by the local Toyota plant.

My contribution
Here's a picture of my Nissan LEAF EV. I drive it to work and to errands around town. It has no gas tank and no tailpipe.
Once every couple of weeks I need to make a longer highway trip that's beyond Leafy's battery range so I borrow Mrs. OiT's "gasser". As battery technology improves this will be less and less a problem.

past the tipping point
and certainly time to leave it in the ground.

They are talking carbon sequestering factories, mirrors in space, spraying the atmosphere with sulfur dioxide, liming oceans to promote plankton growth, and other ideas.
Unfortunately the scientific community doesn't suggests it is real to leave it in the ground - but that is the way to survival. Sadly it is profits before people or planet, and that will be our doom.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Unfortunately all those geoengineering approaches
are also high risk and incredibly expensive. Would be much more cost-effective to leave it in the ground and switch to alternatives, even if the governments had to provide new cars to everyone. Some tests of salting the ocean with iron compounds and other nutrients has been tested and it failed. It was a small-scale test though, might not be an adequate test.
Still severe drought conditions in the friggen Finger Lakes
and today heavy rain N and S of me, I am not aware if we are under a segment of the jet stream, but I feel unblessed. I do not have AC, never have. I have some gutter downspouts to refabricate as watering garbage can receptacles, keep looking for parts, have cans+lids. Progress is being made, albeit slowly.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
A big part of the problem is that
all of us who are concerned about this issue could give up almost everything tomorrow and make nary a dent in the problem. I still have students coming into my classes who don't think any of it is real; most can be convinced with the evidence, but not all.
We must now be in mitigation mode and attempt to find ways to lessen the impacts that are coming whether we like it or not. Yes, we should definitely try to conserve energy, drive less, etc., but it's going to take a lot more than that to meet the upcoming challenges.
Population control
How about an Earth human population of around 3 billion? This 7-8 billion and growing is a huge problem! Stop procreating for a couple generations!! Then deal with the economic problems that produces by switching to a greener economy. I know, easier said than done but it's a plan.
It is THE problem, and the only one.
It is THE problem, and the only one. Get back to 3 billion or fewer, and the problem would go away (it would take some decades but it would eventually happen).
Without that adjustment, no other solution will have any significant effect at all. With that adjustment, no other adjustment is necessary.
The population Ponzi at the core of capitalism is collapsing, as Ponzi schemes always do. No major nation on Earth can now keep all its able-bodied inhabitants fully employed, no matter what it does or how it acts. We are, in fact, up against the wall of the inability of a finite planet to sustain infinite growth.
Unfortunately, biological reality hits us in the face here. Some humans must procreate in every generation, as our females' ability to do that is perishable over time. Therefore, we need to allow some to procreate and not others. As to how to implement this, I have no idea; but we need to do it. As to those who tell us that sterilization, birth control, and abortion are offenses against some "God" or other, I say this: let that "God" show up and offer a workable solution, now. (I know that no such thing will ever happen.)

What he said
Thanks for elaborating on my comment. I get tired of hearing about electric cars, recycling, carbon tax, etc. without addressing world population. I'm afraid we are genetically unable to reign in our reproductive instincts - I guess we are just big brained apes!
Peace.
My family is at minus levels
Me: no kids
Sister: one child
Brother: one child
Cousin 1: no kids
Cousin 2: no kids
Cousin 3: no kids
Cousin 4: two kids
There are some other cousins I'm not sure about, but I don't think they did all that much in the way of reproducing either. If this caught on, and went on for a few generations....
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
The fertility rate in the US is below replacement levels.
Whatever we're doing right, we should export it.
And yes, I think we and everywhere would do better with free and widely available birth control, and the absolute right to abortion.

birth control and abortion
And, much as I am loath to say it, a global pushback against all religion which teaches otherwise. If the beLIEvers in such cults don't like that, they can cough up their God(s) to provide us with another solution now, as I said above.

I'm a believer, very lapsed, and I gotta say, it's not in the
Gospels, it's crap from the hierarchy. You can follow that old-time religion. Just ignore the Church hierarchy, it's not anything Jesus said. Don't know for sure but betting it's not in the Bible anywhere, given that would necessitate modern medicine and surgery.

Believers versus beLIEvers
I resemble the same much myself. I used the term beLIEver for a reason. You are a believer; the crap-spewing hierarchs and their enthusiastic supporters are beLIEvers. Not the same thing, and surprisingly often polar opposites in practice. Please do not confuse the two.
History will note that the single person most responsible for the final demise of the Christian Religion from our Planet will be one Giovanni Batista Montini, Pope Paul VI. His Humanae Vitae is where all this crapola started. Prior to the publication, there was no unified Christian teaching on birth control or abortion because Jesus was indeed silent on the matter, as you correctly point out! And birth control was not unknown in His time, so if He had wanted to comment thereon, He could well have done so.
Anyway, my remarks were NOT aimed at the likes of you, but more at the likes of Paul VI and his enthusiastic backers -- backers of what amounts to a serious mistake, IMHO.

Cool. Just wanted to make sure that people understood that
Christians are supposed to be following Jesus Christ, thus the name, and this all wasn't His idea.
I think Saint Paul - the apostle Paul - is the other one who will be responsible for the demise of the Church. His sexual hang-ups, responsible for 2000 years of sexual misery.

I opted NOT to have kids.

it is simple, and is all voluntary on the part of the person(s) doing this.
So long, and thanks for all the fish
I come from a three-generation line of 2 children per couple.
I think that puts me at replacement rate, may be too low.

I realized by 4th grade that I was not maternal.
It didn't mean I was a dysfunctional female member of Homo sapiens. Far from it. It just meant I was becoming more and more educated about myself. Education has always been key in controlling population growth. The lords/kings/plantation owners hate it. No surprise there. REC'D!!
