Time was when a boy was raised up to be respectful and beyond that to take personal responsibility for the well-being of those younger than him and especially of all females regardless of age. These things were taught by the mother, reinforced by the father, and practiced on the mother, sisters, and near neighbors. Respect was shown by forms of address and by acknowledging the folks around him. This was called “paying attention”.
