Although I usually ignore these as most of them are blatant attempts to entice one to paywall-restricted contents, I found an article from Business Insider which is apropos to several of gjohnsit's essays as regards the price of labor.

The changes in this country regarding income inequality since 1980 are a direct consequence of the policies, acts, bills, and other actions created and taken, or not taken, by our representative government during the 1980 to present time period and some years prior.

Pew Research Center Study shows shrinking middle class almost everywhere in America.

Economic inequality matters.
