Fascism Lite: The Lessons Learned this Time Round

There are several lessons about fascism between the Wars that have particular relevance for our own time. First, fascism is not confined to a particular time, place or set of economic conditions in the past. Fascism is not just grainy black-and-white photos of Depression-era Europe.

Last night I went to a dentist appointment and they had the ubiquitous big flat screen tv which was tuned to CNN. If I had just entered a restaurant I probably would have walked out; if obliged to sit in a waiting room more often than not I ask if anyone is watching it, and either ask to switch it off or to change the channel. There was even a flat screen tv in the patient's room where I had my teeth cleaned.

If All Ads Were Like Politics

Buy our car. It doesn't break down nearly as often as the other models.

Eat at our restaurant. People don't get food poisoning nearly as often here as that other place.

Our airplanes don't crash nearly as often as the other guy's.

Our bottled water is less contaminated than our competitors.

Sure you get salmonella with our soup, but the other company give you botulism.
