Where do we live?

Slicklion at Tranzgender has compiled a list of cities with the largest transgender populations. I do not know from where this information was gleaned, nor do I believe it is particularly accurate.

But share it I shall. Tranzgender has added recommendations about places to transition.

With the growth of the community comes changing demographics and a shifting of the community's needs and home base. Other factors will likely play into where the majority of the community ends up setting down in future.

Economic oppression and wealth inequality, for instance is pricing most of the community out the San Francisco Bay Area, which is home to the largest transgender community.

TRANZGENDR recommends that if you're looking to plant new roots, find a place where you can live comfortably and afford your transition.

There can't be enough wonderful things to be said about Portland, Oregon and the areas that surround this Northwest transgender oasis. It has one of the highest transgender and LGBTQ populations and the legal protections to prove it. If you're trying to decided whether to live in Portland or Seattle, there are a couple of things you should consider. Seattle's cost of living is higher, but it has no state income tax. Portland's cost of living is lower but has an income tax, but no sales tax. The great thing about Portland, is that its so close to the Washington State border that you can live and work in Vancouver and play in Portland.

TRANZGENDR recommends this living situation for transgender men, women and non-binaries looking for a new home.

Texas is one of the most conservative and anti-transgender states in the Union, but the Southern belles of the trans community have decided to nest in the city of Austin. While Austin is clearly a progressive city, gerrymandering has left them with poor political representation and a lack of established rights. Austin isn't all bad, the city is both beautiful and rich. The people who aren't raging against the LGBTQ community, can be downright hospitable. The rising cost of living is posing problems for some of the community who want to live within the city. Overall it's relatively affordable place to live compared to other cities on the list, the rights situation needs work.

If grits and jambalaya are a way of life for you, then you're probably living in New Orleans, or pretty darn close to it. New Orleans is a modern and relatively progressive city in the otherwise conservative South. Most of New Orleans has been rebuilt and most of the jobs have come back. The tourist industry and community are once again strutting down Bourbon Street. Again Louisiana is a conservative state, so many of the rights and privileges the community enjoys in other states are being denied to transgender Louisianians.

Seattle Washington is a great city with progressive leadership and home to many major technology corporations. It's cost of living is starting to reflect that reality. It is still way more affordable than San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, but it's a growing concern for many living in the region. The city has instituted a $15 minimum wage to help the middle class afford to live there. There are also other major developments that surround Seattle like, SeaTac, Everett, Bellevue, Redmond and Tacoma. They offer some relief from the cost of city living, but overall you better have something good lined up if you're planning to live near Seattle.

If you hate New York, you're probably from Boston. Actually you probably live anywhere else but New York. Anyway Boston just passed an anti-discrimination bill that extended legal protections to the transgender community, which is sweet. The cost of living is comparable to other major cities, which means it's going to be tough to afford to live there and pay for your transition. It has many great colleges and universities in the area, and is a solid place to set up shop if you're a white collar professional.

The problem with New York, is that it's full of New Yorkers. New York is again one of the most expensive places on Earth. If you're living New York and you're transgender then your apartment probably looks like you're still living in the closet. New York is a progressive city with all the amenities, but who cares when your struggling to find a place for the hot plate you're using to cook all your Ramen noodles.

By now, I hope your getting the point of this article. Which is that you must make a wise decision about where you live, so you can afford to live. Most young people have unrealistic dreams and expectations, that often leave them broke and hopeless.

I believe a couple of cities with extremely large transgender populations have been omitted from Tranzgender's list: Washington, DC, and Los Angeles.

When it all comes down to it, what one needs for a successful transition is an adequate support system. A friendly populace is a huge plus. Legal protections are a definite advantage. But that support system is a necessity.

I live in Bellingham, WA, about 85 miles north of Seattle. When my 15yo son transitioned here, about 13 years ago, he did not get harassed once in school. I realize this is very unusual, but I like to think it's because people in the PNW are generally more open minded.

I can't find the quote, but I remember him speculating on how the US might break up by regions. He said WA, OR, and Northern CA would form a civilized socialist state. I think by Northern CA he meant pretty much down to SF.

But east of the mountains it's pure looney toons...

Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, Idaho, Utah...I think David Brin wrote about it in The Postman...

I would hazard a guess that Minneapolis and St. Paul would be a good fit also.
