When Ben Carson Makes Things Look Sane

Yeah. Yeah. I know. Stopped clocks. Needle in a haystack. Anything can happen once...
"Dr. Ben Carson, a former pediatric neurosurgeon and potential 2016 presidential contender, broke from some of his fellow Republicans on Monday by saying that strict vaccination policies should be in place, even for those who have religious or philosophical objections.
"Although I strongly believe in individual rights and the rights of parents to raise their children as they see fit, I also recognize that public health and public safety are extremely important in our society," Carson said in a statement to BuzzFeed.
Jeez Louise. When Ben Carson is the voice of reason among your presidential candidates...
What does that tell us?

Will someone in the media please publicize the off-the-political-spectrum quotes he's made over the years?

This is a publuc health matter
Not a matter of listening to Gore, Obama or Cheney. What do they know about public health? I'll give Carson minimum points for at least repeating what he learned in Med school about this issue.
This is heeding what our schools of public health and the CDC say. Our public health system is not big government. Big pharma doesn't make money on the measels vaccine, so they don't have a doggie in this fight and have been relatively silent here.

Big Pharma has a lot to answer for
I'm particularly offended by the barrage of direct-to-consumer ads for drugs whose names look like a bad set of Scrabble tiles. The ones that particularly rub me the wrong way are for anti-depressants. Did you ever notice that the great majority of actors in those ads are young women?
Big Pharma has a lot to answer for
as does the federal government for refusing to negoiate drug prices for Part D.
I wonder what Billy Tauzin's net worth is now.

Vaccinations have been proven effective
The statistics over the years have proven both the overall safety and effectiveness of required vaccinations. The measles out break in California is an excellent example why we should require all children in public schools to be properly vaccinated. I am old enough to remember chicken pox, measles, and mumps because I had all three during my childhood. Both measles and mumps can cause permanent physical harm and can even kill while chicken pox is related to later life shingles attacks. I also remember knowing kids permanently crippled as a result of polio. All these diseases along with small pox had been pretty much wiped out due to the development of effective vaccines.
The arrogance of certain people claiming a privilege by not vaccinating their children endangers the health of the community at large. The risk of vaccines is infinitesimal while the risk of these diseases is significant. I am not willing to grant special privileges to these people for whatever reason they may claim. If their kids are in public schools then they should be required to be vaccinated. No exceptions. If these people do not want to vaccinate their kids, then they should stay out of the public schools.

It's not just schools
Non-vaccinated indivuals pose a threat in any public place.

Definitely agree
The reason I cited public schools is that is the best single place where the government can enforce who is vaccinated. When I worked in local government, we had a saying "regulation is no good if you cannot enforce what you regulate." Obviously, it would be much better if the public would consider their civic responsibility comes before their personal desires. But absent that, the government has the right to regulate and enforce adequate vaccinations upon those who attend public schools.
Today, I saw a good article at Yahoo, of all places, that captures my personal view on this issue because I see this one issue as just a single piece of a much larger societal problem here in the US. http://news.yahoo.com/what-anti-vax-parents-get-wrong-about-personal-lib...
