There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.
Actually, the Canadian connection was derived from the family who provided the armiger of this week's banner. But do not take offense, gentle tapu dali; we're talking the Houses of Hanover and Teck here. King George VI had one parent of each house; his Dad was the Hanoverian Monarch George V (UK) and his Mom was Mary of Teck, owner of the arms in the II and IV quarters.
The flag's armiger was closely related to the post-Victoria Royal House in every possible aspect, and was theoretically in line for the Throne so long as he remained Protestant.
It is well worth noting that the current youngest heir-apparent to the British Throne, Prince William, is currently styled "The Duke of Cambridge".
