War Drums against Russia Bang Ever More Loudly

Some background, opinions, truth, and Agitprop

‘Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday that Russia's "playbook" for an invasion of Ukraine is moving forward, though he said there still is a chance for diplomacy to avert a war, CNN.com, Feb.20

“Still, Blinken said the US would continue to try to find a last-ditch diplomatic path. He said that President Joe Biden is willing to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin "at any time, in any format" if it will help prevent a war, saying the Biden administration will continue to take whatever steps it can to try to convince Moscow not to invade Ukraine.

‘Ukraine appears to have staged a “kindergarden attack” to cover its crimes & fuel anti Donbass propaganda’, [the exceptional] Eva Bartlett, ingaza.wordpress.com Feb. 18

Given her extensive coverage of the White Helmets, stars of stage and screen, it’s small wonder that she equates them:

How White Helmets of Ukraine…

“An urgent statement by the official representative of the NM of the LPR, Senior Lieutenant Filiponenko I.M. ‼️
Today, the headquarters of the joint forces operation filed a trumped-up charge against the People’s Militia of the LPR in alleged shelling of a kindergarten in the village of Stanitsa Luganskaya.

This, so to speak, news was picked up by the Ukrainian propaganda media and used to divert public attention from the regular violations of the Minsk agreements of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the destruction of civilian facilities in the Luhansk Republic.
>The public was presented with photos with the results of the shelling of the kindergarten. It was they who became indisputable evidence of the involvement of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in this crime.

>Our experts studied the photographic materials in detail and carried out their thorough analysis.
> The location of the kindergarten building, the angle at which the wall was hit, made it possible to calculate the exact trajectory of the projectile. As can be seen in the diagram presented, the shooting could only be carried out from the east direction. At the same time, the position of the alleged weapon from which the fire was fired is located on the territory controlled by the 79th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

>Any sane person will determine that there cannot be units of the People’s Militia in that direction by definition. All this proves that the farce with the destruction of the kindergarten is a provocation by Kiev in order to destabilize the situation in the Donbass.” [...]

“Based on the newly discovered circumstances of the investigation of the staged shelling of a kindergarten in the settlement of NOVAYA KONDRASHEVKA, it was established that a group of a separate special purpose center of the special operations forces “West” was involved in the shelling, which fired a shot from an American M141 bunker-type grenade launcher from a water tower in the area of ul.Depovskaya 12. [...]

“A white Land Cruiser car without license plates, with armed men without identification marks, was seen in a residential courtyard at the time of the shell explosion, 5 minutes before the arrival of foreign and national media film crews, accompanied by IPSO officers, emergency services and representatives of the JCCC.

We were sure that American weapons would be used in the Donbas, but the fact that they were used against civilians in the territory controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the coordinated actions of propagandists led by Zelensky leaves no doubt about the bloodthirstiness and unscrupulousness of the Ukrainian junta.”

Putin warned the West, but the West didn't listen
Like it or not, the Russian president is doubling down on his crusade against American hegemony; Paul Robinson, professor at the University of Ottawa. He writes about Russian and Soviet history, military history and military ethics, and is author of the Irrussianality blog. via RT, Feb. 18, 2022 (a few passages of his worthy column)

“Roughly at the mid-point between the end of the Cold War and today, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin gave a speech which provides an explanation, and which historians may well look back to as something of a turning point. Delivered to the Munich Conference on Security Policy on February 10, 2007, that’s 15 years ago last week, the speech was interpreted by many as a declaration of war on the West. This was a misinterpretation. Putin didn’t threaten the West with anything. Instead, he simply gave it a warning – if it continued along the same path, it would sow the seeds of its own destruction. Time has perhaps proven him right.”

In his speech, Putin made a number of specific complaints. First, he objected to the idea of a unipolar order in which one country, the US, has dominated all others. This model, he said, “is not only unacceptable but also impossible in today’s world.” On the one hand, power was shifting; on the other hand, the unipolar model provided “no moral foundations for modern civilization.” [...]

“As for the West, looking back at its self-destructive errors in recent years, one might consider Putin something of a prophet. But if so, it’s a prophet in the guise of the Trojan princess Cassandra who was fated to be always right but never believed. Rather than taking heed of Putin’s warning, Western leaders have bludgeoned onwards, toppling Colonel Gaddafi in Libya, aiding rebels in Syria, attempting (and failing at) regime change in Venezuela, fighting and losing against the Taliban, sanctioning Iran, supporting revolution in Ukraine, and so on. It has not turned out well. We can’t say we weren’t warned.”

‘Ukrainian rebels mobilise as fighting escalates’, BBC News, Feb. 19, 2022

“Ukraine's Russian-backed breakaway eastern territories have ordered military mobilisations amid an escalation in fighting.

Men of fighting age in the self-declared people's republics of Donetsk and Luhansk are being put on stand-by. Monitors report a "dramatic increase" in attacks along the line dividing rebel and government forces.

US President Joe Biden says he is convinced Russia will invade Ukraine, an allegation Moscow denies. Western nations have accused Russia of trying to stage a crisis in the breakaway regions to give it a reason to launch an offensive.

The US estimates there are 169,000-190,000 Russian personnel massed along Ukraine's borders, a figure that includes separatist fighters in Donetsk and Luhansk.”

Biden claims “Putin has made the decision” to invade Ukraine as mass evacuations begin in the Donbass’, Clara Weiss, wsws.org, Feb.19

“In a 10-minute speech, Biden warned that “such a decision” would mean that Russia will be “responsible” for a “catastrophic and needless war of choice.” Russia would have to pay a “steep price” for such a war, he threatened, as the US and NATO were prepared to “defend any inch of NATO territory.”

Biden blamed Russia for a “major uptick” in shelling in East Ukraine, the site of an eight-year long civil war that erupted in the wake of the US-funded 2014 far-right coup in Kiev. The US President went on to praise Ukraine’s military, which is riddled with fascists and has been armed and trained by the US, for their “great judgement” and “restraint” and insisted that the US would “continue to support the Ukrainian people.”

Biden claimed that Thursday’s shelling of a kindergarten on the separatist-controlled territory of Lugansk, was a “false-flag operation” by Russia “in line” with what the US had been warning about. As has been the case with all the lies and allegations of the past weeks and months, he did not even try to produce any evidence to back up his allegations.”

‘Ukraine makes nuclear status threat; The country’s president has requested talks on the implementation of the Budapest Memorandum’, RT.com, Feb. 19

White House: Biden to Convene National Security Council Meeting on Sunday to Discuss Latest on Ukraine, 18 hrs ago

“Speaking at the Munich security conference on Saturday, Zelensky pointed out that in 1994 Ukraine joined the Budapest Memorandum and gave up its nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees, suggesting the move could be reversed if it is threatened by neighboring Russia.

Today we have neither weapons nor security. We have lost a part of our territory, which is larger by its area than Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium. And, most importantly, we’ve lost millions of our citizens. All this is absent,” Zelensky said.”

[...]

President Zelensky insists that the Minsk agreements, which are poised to serve as a road map for a peace process, have been “poorly written” and do not benefit Ukraine. Instead Zelensky would like to see a new document, to be signed by the “major powers,” including Russia and the US, which would contain several clauses on security guarantees for Ukraine.”

"Tensions are running high in the self-proclaimed Donbass republics, where thousands of people have had to leave their homes and are being evacuated to Russia due to constant shelling by Ukrainian forces.

Kiev has repeatedly used 120mm mortars banned by the Minsk accord, against the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR). Over the past hours, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe's Special Monitoring Mission (OSCE SMM) said it had registered 222 ceasefire violations in Ukraine's Donetsk region, and 648 breaches of the truce in the Lugansk region.

As of Saturday morning, around 25,000 people have crossed the border with Russia from the LPR side.

UK military shares map of ‘Putin's invasion’;
British intelligence fuels fears of a sudden Russian attack with an ominous chart', Feb 18, 2022

"The ministry’s map featured seven different arrows “invading” Ukraine from Russia and Belarus. DefenceHQ’s tweet came about an hour after UK foreign minister Liz Truss said she was “very concerned about reports today of increased Russian aggression.”

Truss followed that up by saying that reports of “alleged abnormal military activity by Ukraine in Donbas are a blatant attempt by the Russian government to fabricate pretexts for invasion.”

@Lookout

Western propaganda, in this case, is the aggressor.
Would have to say it is pretty obvious the victims on the ground
in Ukraine, Donbas and other "break away" regions are going to be
the losers in this new form of skewed western warfare. The US set-up
Ukraine to be the patsy for US military interests. The Bidens were part of
this grand scheme. If the regions south of Russia could get beyond the
international (NATO) push towards death and destruction, perhaps they
could align in a peaceful fashion for whatever is best for their future?

Ukraine and Poland selling out to military interests is not going to do the
people of the region any good, imo.

The West is trying to get Russia to attack Ukraine and then fabricate the story that unprovoked, Russia started a war of choice, and is therefore to be shunned by all US ass-kissing countries. This is of course projection. How many times in recent history has the US/NATO done this? Russia is not going to be goaded into doing this, much to the frustration of Sullivan, Blinken and Biden (if he was capable of any reaction other than how he is told to react). President Putin will wait and see what happens as the Ukonazis lob artillery and mortars into the Donbas, and blow up cars and gas pipelines in acts of terrorism. The military of the Donbas is very capable of fending off anything but a full-on assault. If they try a full-on assault then the Russian military will be instructed to do their job. At that point it will be obvious as to who the aggressor is, but that will not stop the US/NATO to claim that Russia attacked unprovoked. The OSCE publishes a map of the sites where shells land every day. You can find it by googling OSCE maps. It's obvious that the vast majority of shells are landing on territory of the Donbas. Yet the US state department and very egregiously the New York Times outright lied about this. WTF, are they a newspaper or the propaganda scribes for the Biden Administration? Hey, how did they do in the lead up to the Iraq war?

Anyway, If I'm right do not expect outright war or invasion from Russia. The important countries are France and Germany. They do not want another war on European soil and they want to continue commerce as usual with Russia and China. Much of the political class understands that Russia has a right to her security. Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, has already said that Ukraine will not become a member of NATO anytime in the foreseeable future. The question will become - does Europe have sufficient honor, integrity and confidence to oppose the US. This is it because the US is pushing for a war on Europe's own soil. And the most important consideration is that Russia completes Western Europe. Without Russia Europe has a limited future. Russia is as moral, civilized and cultured as Europe would like to believe that it is. This is nothing less than a contest of civilizations. May the Euro-Asian continent live up to its potential, and the US mind its own business until it learns about wisdom.

wait! projection??? via RT this a.m.:

Ukraine has denied a Russian claim that five of its service personnel were killed on Monday during a firefight near the two countries shared border.

Kiev added that none of its forces have a presence in Russia’s Rostov region, dismissing Moscow’s assertion as “fake news.”

“I reiterate that the Ukrainian armed forces have not attacked Donetsk and Lugansk, have not sent saboteurs or APCs across the border, have not shelled Russia’s territory or its border checkpoint. All of these are the products of Russia’s fake factory,” Ukrainian military spokesman Pavlo Kovalchuk told reporters.

The official also insisted the country’s military has not taken any “aggressive actions” at all lately, claiming the forces of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk have been shelling themselves to ramp up the ongoing tensions.

The US has intelligence indicating orders have been sent to Russian commanders to proceed with an attack on Ukraine, according to two US officials and another source familiar with the US intelligence.
The intelligence regarding the order to tactical commanders and intelligence operatives is one of several indicators the US is watching to assess if Russian preparations have entered their final stages for a potential invasion.

"Sources familiar with the US Intelligence." Strong!

Other indicators, such as electronic jamming and widespread cyberattacks, have not yet been observed, according to some of the sources.

You mean things that can actually be measured show nothing.

The Washington Post first reported on the orders going to commanders.

Ah, the WashPost. Credibility.
Meanwhile in Ukraine.

Ukraine DM Oleksii Reznikov told parliament on Friday that there is a low probability of any major escalation with Russia. He added that Ukraine intelligence sees every move made in the area.

Tensions at the Russia-Ukraine border have been ongoing, with several Western nations repeatedly predicting a huge war. Ukraine has chided those nations for causing a panic.

Predictions of such a conflict go back years, and while previous Ukraine officials had similar pessimism about it, more recently officials see a lot more chance for diplomacy.

The Burden Of Proof Is Always On The Ones Making The Claim (Even If It's About Russia)

Well you'll be shocked to learn that, while the Ukraine invasion we've been told for weeks was happening any day now still has not occurred, the US and UK have declared that Russia attacked Ukraine in an invisible and unverifiable way for which the evidence is secret.

"The White House blamed Russia on Friday for this week’s cyberattacks targeting Ukraine’s defense ministry and major banks and warned of the potential for more significant disruptions in the days ahead," AP reports. "Anne Neuberger, the Biden administration’s deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, said the U.S. had rapidly linked Tuesday’s attacks to Russian military intelligence officers."

"Technical information analysis shows the GRU was almost certainly involved in disruptive DDoS attacks," adds a statement from the UK Foreign Office.

No evidence for this claim has been provided beyond the assertive tone with which American and British officials have uttered it, but that likely won't stop arguments from western narrative managers that this "attack" justifies immediate economic sanctions.
...

Much like the Gulf War and Iraq War, the administration war junkies continue to add more allegations to their case for war. This ratcheting up of their case (90%+ lies of course) is strong evidence that Biden has made the decision to go to war in Ukraine.

The U.S. has "credible information" indicating "Russian forces are creating lists" of Ukrainians "to be killed or sent to camps following a military occupation," per a letter to the UN obtained by the Washington Post Sunday night.

Driving the news: Bathsheba Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, warns in the letter the information "recently obtained by the United States ... indicates that human rights violations and abuses in the aftermath of a further invasion are being planned."

The letter

Dear High Commissioner Bachelet,

I am writing you today with some urgency to express profound concern about the escalating situation in Ukraine. The United States is gravely concerned that a further Russian invasion of Ukraine would produce widespread human suffering.

In light of OHCHR’s important mandate and its reporting presence in Ukraine, we wish to share this information with you as an early warning that a further Russian invasion of Ukraine may create a human rights catastrophe. We are deeply concerned about Russia’s continuing human rights abuses in the parts of Ukraine it already occupies and have every reason to believe those concerns will multiply following a new military offensive.

I would like to bring to your attention disturbing information recently obtained by the United States that indicates that human rights violations and abuses in the aftermath of a further invasion are being planned. These acts, which in past Russian operations have included targeted killings, kidnappings/forced disappearances, unjust detentions, and the use of torture, would likely target those who oppose Russian actions, including Russian and Belarusian dissidents in exile in Ukraine, journalists and anti-corruption activists, and vulnerable populations such as religious and ethnic minorities and LGBTQI+ persons.

Specifically, we have credible information that indicates Russian forces are creating lists of identified Ukrainians to be killed or sent to camps following a military occupation. We also have credible information that Russian forces will likely use lethal measures to disperse peaceful protests or otherwise counter peaceful exercises of perceived resistance from civilian populations. As the United States explores every opportunity to push Russia toward de-escalation and diplomacy, Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised these concerns to the Security Council on February 17, 2022. In particular, he stated that the United States has information that indicates Russia will target specific groups of Ukrainians.

At the Human Rights Council, the United States raised concerns about Russia’s plans during the debate on your Office’s periodic report onthe situation in Ukraine on December 15, 2021. We understand that in carrying out its mission to work for the protection of all human rights for all people OHCHR prioritizes addressing the most pressing human rights violations and abuses, particularly those that put life in imminent peril. OHCHR plays a leadership role in the international community on human rights crises, including focusing attention on those who are most at risk and vulnerable. We share this information with you in support of OHCHR’s important mission. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any additional information.

Regards, Ambassador Bathsheba Nell Crocker U.S. Representative to the Office of the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva

No prospects’ for peace plan to end Ukraine conflict: Putin
By AFP.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that he no longer felt that a key 2015 plan agreed with France, Germany and Kyiv would be able to resolve Ukraine’s separatist conflict.

“We understand that there are no prospects” for the implementation of the 2015 Minsk peace accords, agreed in the capital of Belarus to end fighting between Ukraine’s army and pro-Moscow rebels in the east of the country, Putin told his security council.

The European Union has approved €1.2B in emergency aid for Ukraine, POLITICO, which covers political issues in the EU, reports. feb. 21

It noted that the first tranche of €600 million in loans to Ukraine, as it works to secure its economy and security in the face of the ongoing crisis involving Russia, will be handed out swiftly.

as Peacekeepers', RT. today:

President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian military to “secure the peace” in the newly recognized Donetsk and Lugansk republics, which were formerly considered to be part of Ukraine.

Moscow officially recognized the independence of the two breakaway regions on Monday.

Putin has instructed the Defense Ministry to send peacekeepers into the Donbass, while telling the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish diplomatic relations with the states.

The Kremlin’s official move comes shortly after Putin’s lengthy address to the nation on Monday evening. In it, he explaiened the step as a long overdue response to what he described as the “brotherly” Ukrainian nation becoming a “colony” of the West and falling under the rule of a “russophobic” government both hostile to Moscow and denying ethnic Russians and Russian-speakers basic human rights.'

bold move; here's hoping it doesn't bring more war.
