Technicalities... converting from word to this site

Hi Everyone:

This is a meta topic that I thought might be helpful to people other than me. I had prepared a full response to my brother about Syria and to do so I'd worked in Microsoft Word. Only later did I look at what I'd written and realize that:

a) It would make a nice story here.
b) The members here could critique it and improve it.

After some fudging around I came up with this pretty clean way to get from Microsoft Word into HTML which mostly works cleanly on this site.

  1. Write Document in Word
  2. Head on over to this conversion site.
  3. Copy from Word and paste into left-hand WYSIWIG editor.
  4. Hit CLEAN HTML button on lower-right of right-hand editor
  5. Head on over to WYSIWSYG editor and do any final cleanups
  6. Paste from HTML editor (right-hand editor) into C99

That worked amazingly well for me. It did not convert embedded images but nothing is likely to do that well for a variety of technical reasons. I hope this little "how to" is useful to someone else.

The same trip ought to work pretty well in reverse too. Enjoy.

I'm not saying you are wrong, I'm saying oh.

I clicked on your link to take a look. Holy moly.

I write my diaries right in the website, but I can appreciate someone might have a need to "bring" something over and have to clean it up.

@dkmich

I write my diaries right in the website, but I can appreciate someone might have a need to "bring" something over and have to clean it up.

Examples: gjohnsit (a LOT!), and, soon, me. I'll be working to get my May Day (Beltaine) essays online for the holiday, and anything like this that can help is, of course, helpful!

Another suggestion: There are WYSIWYG HTML editors available as freeware, to use on your local system. LibreOffice Write will take Microsoft Weird Word input, facilitate cleanup, and save as HTML. The SeaMonkey Internet Suite (a fork of, and supported by, Mozilla) has a WYSIWYG HTML editor in it, too.
