Segregated Education -- Clinton Style

Former President Bill Clinton collected $5.6 million in fees from GEMS Education--

... a Dubai-based company. His biggest paycheck from the closely-held company — which is incorporated in the Cayman Islands — was in 2014 when he pocketed $2.1 million. GEMS even has two “international” schools in Chicago.

GEMS World Academy Downtown Will Charge $32,000 For Kindergarten

...and a fifth-grader at the school opening in fall 2014 would pay $37,000, though first-year families get a 10 percent discount. By comparison, yearly tuition for a fifth-grader at Latin School of Chicago is $29,985, $27,210 at Francis W. Parker School and $25,296 at University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. The Chicago school's literature boasts "an entrepreneurial focus" that includes projects and mentorships with "leading businesses and organizations.

Chicago Requests More Charter Schools After Massive Wave Of Public School Closings

... for the South Side Free Music Program, which provides music lessons to children ages five to 14, the proposed closing of three elementary schools near KLEO Community Family Life Center raised concerns about a potential decrease in program attendance. If these schools—Anthony Overton, Crispus Attucks, and Francis Parkman Elementaries—close, fourth-year Noah Huh, who oversees the program’s operations at KLEO’s Washington Park location, worries that students will no longer be able to travel there for music lessons.

Ugh. Sounds like "How to fuck over the poor and look good doing it."

I'm horrified that this crap is affecting music programs. If I can jump on my soapbox here:

Music programs are an essential part of civilization. The ability to play an instrument requires discipline and creativity. It is a combination that creates better human beings because the entire experience requires the ability to adjust on the fly to changing demands. IN essence, A music program is a far better preparation for a student in regards to the real world than any "Win friends and influence people" class will ever be.

That is of course, assuming the purpose of education is to create people with critical thinking skills and the ability to be good citizens.
If you want mindless drones, MUSIC must be DESTROYED!

“If CPS (Chicago Public Schools) carries out its plan to close 54 schools, up to 60% of receiving schools will become overcrowded schools or have overcrowded classrooms."

"90% of the affected schools have a majority black student population. 71% have a majority black student and teaching staff."

"There is a clear double-standard when CPS is closing and consolidating schools on the south and west sides in order to make them ‘efficient’, and in many instances over-crowded, while at the same time funneling money to a school in Ravenswood to expand further when CPS deems it ‘efficient’."

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

I don't use keyboard at night, so will write my commentary tomorrow.

The maps in the poster compare demographics by race with arts and music programs. A school without arts and music is not a real school.

And the point is that the Clintons accept huge payoffs from foreign entities to approve and construct schools for very rich people ($37,000 a year) while schools in poor (mostly POC) neighborhoods are shut down and kids crowded together like sardines in a can in places where music and art are eliminated.

The neighborhoods which have their schools removed can become hopeless predator zones, Fort Apache's so to speak, because the way a government improves a neighborhood and make it a peaceful place is by having good schools, libraries, art and music and other youth programs, clean and safe parks and programs, and friendly community-based security.

One of the schools in the Southside was even found to have a dangerously high lead level in the water...

Dominica just rated highest in 5th Form exams 16 countries in the region... and kids can still play outside unsupervised.

If one knows a different reality (culture) it becomes crystal clear how vile American culture and politics has become.

For all the intense criticism of #BlackLivesMatter on this board and elsewhere, I don't think anyone should ignore or forget that Milwaukee has an intensely segregated, and unequal school system.

Many traditional public schools in Milwaukee lack the same kinds of resources that exist at higher-income, mostly white schools: full-time library media specialists, a full entree of art, music and physical education for all students on a regular basis, enough guidance counselor resources for all students who need them.

Let me add crumbling infrastructure, overcrowding, a sytem based on "white" values and culture, and draconian "security"... not to mention police making the areas into a militarized occupation zone.

I have this report from Janna in Palestine. Janna is a primary school student from near Ramallah. The point here is that the Bedouins of the West Bank have built their own school using everything from old tires, to "mud and wattle", so that they may educate their children. It is new. And, of course, the Israelis (in the video there is a war machine helicopter doing a fly over) are threatening to demolish it, and if the past is any indication, will.

If you have followed this far, then you can not deny that there is a connection between the struggle of People of Color in the USA and the oppressed minorities in Palestine. This extends to segregation of Arabs from Jews within Israel. (http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-makdisi-why-support-the-acade...)

Five hours ago. We want our right to education-- A Report from the start of the school year, the tire school in Khan Alhmr

The school has more than 150 students from the first grade until the ninth grade of the Bedouin, in the Khan Alhmr, between Jerusalem and Jericho, the Israeli occupation is trying to expel them from the area and the demolition of the only school that has been built from car tires and mud.

Occupation have not allowed to extend the electricity or water, even forcing them to leave the area because Israel wants settlers to come and build settlements builds for Israelis to live in. Indigenous people, the Bedouins, have been expelled.

Israel is stealing all the land between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. We have the right not to destroy our schools and learn like other children of the world. -- Janna

The Israeli elites have their power and want to keep it. As the author of the linked article established, the first Israeli settlers in the modern era were of eastern European origin. This is the power elite. It is both shocking and disgraceful that believers in a religious tradition subject to millennia of persecution would disrespect and devalue Ethiopian Jews because they are black. Have these elites forgotten their own heritage? Do they not remember "the Final Solution"?

And our still benighted politicians condone anything and everything Israel does not only to its neighbors but adherents to their own faith as well.
