Calls Grow to Reject AUMF That Permits 'Waging War All Over World'
'The devastating and costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taught us that when we give military authority to the executive, it should not be a blank check,' says Congressional Progressive Caucus

Opposition to President Barack Obama's request to authorize another endless war in the Middle East continues to build, with progressives charging that the draft resolution is far too broad and anti-war activists mobilizing to defeat the measure.

As Common Dreams has reported, the proposed authorization for use of military force (AUMF) gives approval for open-ended and geographically limitless military operations. Its vague wording leaves the door open to use of ground troops, which the administration has previously vowed to avoid, and does nothing to repeal the sweeping 2001 AUMF, which is still being used to justify ongoing military actions in various regions around the world.

"This Resolution sets a dangerous precedent," said Francis Boyle, a professor at the University of Illinois College of Law and author of Tackling America’s Toughest Questions. "Up until the 2001 AUMF, all War Powers Resolutions had been adopted with respect to a State, not alleged terrorist organizations that can operate anywhere in the world as defined by the President."

But "[t]his Resolution continues in that dangerous path, basically substituting ISIS for al-Qaeda and continuing to wage a global war on terrorism," Boyle continued. "So if Obama cannot plausibly invoke the 2001 Resolution because there is no connection to 9/11 as required therein, he will simply invoke this Resolution. Between the two resolutions you can have the U.S. government waging war all over the world."

Oscars Make History, So Hollywood’s War Stories Need To Be True

When the Academy Awards are handed out, history will be made.

I’m not referring to the Oscars that particular films might win, but our embrace of their narratives of history. If “American Sniper” gathers a fistful of statues, even more people will see a film that presents a skewed view of the Iraq war. If the “Imitation Game” gets lucky, a lot more people will watch a movie that erroneously portrays Alan Turing as a social idiot. If “Selma” catches some of the limelight, more people may believe that Lyndon Johnson wasn’t entirely supportive of Martin Luther King.

This year’s controversy over films and history has led to a dismissive shrug from cultural critics who wearily tell us that movies are just movies, you shouldn’t take their versions of truth to heart, just enjoy the show. “Going to a Hollywood movie for a history lesson is like going to a brothel for a lecture in philosophy,” wrote Esquire’s Stephen Marche. “You’re in the wrong place.” A.O. Scott, the New York Times film critic, tweeted for the hard of understanding, “FEATURE FILMS ARE NOT HISTORY. THEY ARE HISTORICAL FICTION.”
They are right — Hollywood is not a classroom. The problem, however, is that movies, despite the bonfires of distortion in many of them, can shape our understanding of political events just as much as think tank reports or Pulitzer-winning books. For instance, a lot of major movies are taught in schools. It is disingenuous for the screening room cognoscenti to pretend that films are of no political consequence and shouldn’t be critiqued for historical accuracy — and that’s particularly true for war films.

Like I said, it's all based on lies anyway, the new AUMF, the old AUMF, the entire War OF Terror. It's all
about U.S. imperialism and it has to stop.

“Congress cannot lawfully give him authorization to use military force against Syria. That requires the permission of the Syrian government, which they do not have, or else the authorization of the Security Council, which they do not have. As for Iraq, [Iraqi Prime Minister Haider] al-Abadi is a puppet government that Obama installed and therefore has no authority under international law to consent to U.S. military operations in Iraq. It is like in Vietnam when we had our puppets there asking us to conduct military operations there.”

All true, but again, it's beside the main point which is it's all lies for imperialism. In the articles above, I don't see the word "imperialism"
mentioned at all. How are we going to stop it or curtail it if we don't talk about the primary agenda, the primary goal of world hegemony? If we
don't talk about this New World Order they're trying to create.

Unless the triumvirate of evil is reined in, or the plutocrats decide somehow that the US economy is to be built on sustainability and durable infrastructure as opposed to war, FIRE, and fossil.

I have always argued that the cornerstone of the US economy is built on waste, and war is the ultimate waste as it guarantees that things will be destroyed and need to be replaced. The human lives are just collateral damage.

Of course the day the plutocrats decide to redirect even a quarter of the 1 trillion plus spent each year on the war machine, or end the billions in fossil energy subsidies, and use them instead for domestic needs that help regular people like a sustainable energy infrastructure, will be the day the sun rises in the west.

dovetails perfectly with the Salon link that Joe posted in his Evening Blues diary here. It is a long read on just how destructive neoliberalism is, but worthwhile. Here is the snippet that I chose to highlight.

The genesis of each, at least nominally, is the question of whether markets serve society or it is the other way around. Economic conflict, then, has been transformed into humanitarian disasters. This is what Greece and Ukraine have most fundamentally in common.

I personally believe that we are in the midst of World War III, a good portion of which is being fought on the economic battlefield and the oligarchs are winning.

I was curious to see what Daily Kos front pagers had to say about Obama's AUMF request. Not one diary on the subject. The O-bots seem to have no problem with it. Apparently, their Political Gawd can do no evil. The Dem loyalists will get flushed down the drain with their leadership sociopaths.

And in the end, it's not about ending ISIS. It's about feeding the MIC from the taxpayer trough and providing security for US Oil Cos as they pillage the Middle East. I'm really fed up with this Fascist US Govt.

Donnie The #ShitHole Douchebag. Fake Friend to the Working Class. Real Asshole.

With that liar Brian Williams gone, the lies ought to stop, no? The same corporations that own the country, make money from war, also own the media. Thanks goodness for the internet, but if the corporations have their way, and they will eventually, they'll own that too. New World Order=one omnipotent global corporation.

Super America Inc. Choose to work for the GloboCop, Mega Street Bank, or the Crude Co division. Capitalism swallowed up its own asshole.

Of course there was a gas station chain called Super America when I was in college in Minnesota. They seem to have changed their name now to Speedway.

About the chips being implanted into human brains ... ? I don't think that the internet will for some reason save us from being enslaved to it. I think we are already at that point. Not to discourage anyone. But to break that "omnipotent global corporation" something else has to happen. I don't know what though. But it will happen. There are always unforeseen consequences we just don't know about in foresight. At least I hope so.

dudes who are trying to persuade that movies are just movies, no big deal. That's just not the way it works, not with humans involved.
The narratives are believed, reinforced, and strengthened through these movies. Why the hell do they think the CIA and Pentagon
get involved so heavily in these things, just for kicks? No, it's to spread a message.
It works. It worked on many of us when we were young watching John Wayne movies and it works now.

last night at FSU. It was an extensive collection of cartoon art of Bill Mauldin and United States WWII posters, among other things. What my husband and I found interesting is that the poster collection had the title posted above it, "Propaganda Posters." I laughed when I saw one poster of a hand holding a huge knife stabbing a bible. The bible was bleeding and the hand was marked "Germany." I said to myself, the more things change, the more they stay the same. All they would have to do is mark the evil hand as Putin or Muslims or ISIS or AlQeada or whatever is the current boogie man that we are demonizing and the poster would be up to date.

all the meanings for FSU I wasn't sure which one was the right one in the context of your comment. Thanks. That exhibition would have been interesting for me to see.

actually happen, but in anticipation that they will happen and therefore are deeply involved in manipulating the message that they want to spread. Documentary filmmakers are involved in it as well. Motivation of the filmmakers are more important to understand than the actual facts they supposedly want to reveal.

will be a big winner based on what happened to "Zero Dark Thirty." Zero was virtually shunned at the Oscars except for an award to the actress who played a champion of torture in the movie.

Eternal war, domestic and abroad, is what we do best. Isn't it amazing how the humdrum of everyday life plods along unchanged even when the plots to end our life as we know it are exposed. If only there was someplace to escape to.
