The Russians are screwing with the GPS system to send bogus navigation data to thousands of ships - Business Insider

Gaslighting, yes or no?

I found this while trolling and I thought “NOW what’s up with those dastardly commie bastids?” So I read it and figured if this is true, then this means the RUSSIANS!!! can not only hack their way into determining who our prez is, they can hack their way into global radar systems and cause everybody’s directional systems to go KABLOOIE thereby causing all kinds of a dilemma, what with our “never ending battle for truth, justice and the American way”[1] and the threat that those bastids will make it so we’ll never know how to get where we’re going or to know if we’re where we’re supposed to be when we get there.

It’s got to be true, right? Because I’ve used BI as a ‘source’ before (but after I found stuff from other sources that confirm what they were ‘reporting’) And I generally research the the other ‘source, the one behind the story that provided the information we’re all supposed to get all hysterical over. It’s good practice to check to be sure the ‘source’ behind your/my source is credible and couldn’t possibly have any ulterior motives. Which finally brings me to the point of my OP. No source is 100% reliable. Or honest. But when you read an article that tells you...

The Russians are screwing with the GPS system to send bogus navigation data to thousands of ships - Business Insider

• The Russians are hacking the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) on a mass scale in order to confuse thousands of ships and airplanes about where they are, according to a study by Centre for Advanced Defense (C4AD).

• Law enforcement, shipping, airlines, power stations, your phone, and anything else dependent on GPS time and location synchronization, are vulnerable to GNSS hacking.

• All of Britain's critical infrastructure is dependent on GNSS and GPS, according to a report commissioned by the UK Space Agency.

• Russian president Putin's summer dacha is protected by a GNSS spoofing array that helps create a no-fly zone over his vast Italian-style mansion.

• GNSS jamming equipment costs $300.

On May 15, 2018, under a sunny sky, Russian President Vladimir Putin drove a bright orange truck in a convoy of construction vehicles for the opening of the Kerch Bridge from Russia to Crimea. At 11 miles long, it is now the longest bridge in either Europe or Russia.

As Putin drove across the bridge, something weird happened. The satellite navigation systems in the control rooms of more than 24 ships anchored nearby suddenly started displaying false information about their location. Their GPS systems told their captains they were anchored more than 65 kilometres away — on land, at the Anapa Airport.

This was not a random glitch, according to the Centre for Advanced Defense, a security think tank. It was a deliberate plan to make it difficult for anyone nearby to track or navigate around the presence of Putin, C4AD says.

https://www.businessinsider.com/gnss-hacking-spoofing-jamming-russians-s...

...you really gotta wonder. Am I getting the business from the usual peddlers of RUSSIA!!! Nonsense or does Putin really have a secret weapon capable of bringing down all shipping, transportation, law enforcement, and stranding summer vacationers/Coachella travelers world wide? So I looked up Center for Advanced Defense (C4AD). It’s quite the non-profit organization.

C4AD

C4ADS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing data-driven analysis and evidence-based reporting on global conflict and transnational security issues.

We use cutting-edge technologies to manage, integrate, and analyze disparate data from diverse languages, regions, and sources, incorporating our own field research from conflict zones and fragile states. We seek to engage with local and international audiences and produce compelling analysis on conflict and security issues. In doing so, we fill a critical gap left by traditional public sector and profit-driven institutions.

Quite the bunch of non-biased boys and girls who I’m unfairly slandering and abusing or just another bunch of shitweasels out to pull our strings? One guy’s line of work intrigued me. The guy from MIT, the Founder of this organization, the MIT Mind Machine Project guy, it’s quite the project, that is for damn sure.

MIT MIND MACHINE PROJECT

OUR GOALS

The work of MMP spans four intellectual generations, revisiting fundamental assumptions about the nature of the brain, cognition, computing, and intelligence. The project is based on the belief that, by bringing together current advances in each of these areas with insights from their roots, it will be possible to fulfill the early vision that lies at their intersection.

MMP seeks to develop technologies for reading, writing (and virtually simulating) millions of neurons concurrently, to enable interactive exploration of both individual circuits and overall brain function.

Mind (models for thought), Memory (accumulating and using experience), Body (scalable substrates to embody intelligence), and Brain/Intent (looking for advanced applications of these technologies, such as “non-chemical based” solutions for psychiatric treatments and brain prostheses).

*

Brain and Intent: Study the embodiment of intent in neural systems. It incorporates wet laboratory and clinical components, as well as a mathematical modeling and representation components. Develop functional brain and neuron interfacing abilities. Use intent-based models to facilitate representation and exchange of information.Research areas: wet computer, brain language, brain interfaces

Lead researchers: Newton Howard, Sebastian Seung, Ed Boyden

Prospective applications include natural language understanding, unsupervised data inference, and assistance with mental illness and aging.

After doing my due diligence, I’ve come to the conclusion that this article is just another example of how stupid The Great Unwashed are perceived to be by our ‘betters’. Yeah, plenty are going to believe it. Some jackasses still believe Saddam had WMDs. But this ‘article’ is another example of why you can’t believe most of ‘information’ from any media outlet. They all ‘have an ‘agenda’. Here in the US it’s turning the Cold War into a Hot Mess.

This may be war mongering bs but...
Putin spent even more time on the subject, extolling, and playing animated videos of, five new Russian strategic weapons https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2019/03/russia-turning-its-nuclear-rhet...

and another piece to support your hypothesis

At this point I wish china and russia would unite to form a gold based currency that collapses the US economy/government without a war.

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Maybe a year ago, maybe at The Saker or MOA. That other countries, primarily Russia and China had figured out how to fool our GPS. And that practicing these new techniques they were able to successfully cause at least two Navy vessels to crash into tanker/barge traffic. Wish I had bookmarked those stories.
But good question, is this real or is it propaganda to justify increasing military budgets?

@wouldsman
those assertions make good cover for the combines ineptitude, negligence and possible illicit pirpose to our pre collision maneuvers.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

This is a fact, in terms of what's happening with our global poles as we blog: Earth's magnetic north pole is moving faster than ever.

As far as GPS devices being hacked to accommodate someone like Putin in his travels, versus ship navigation, in general--especially in northern seas--are apples and oranges, IMHO.

...navigation system, world wide. They've also announced that anyone may use it free of charge. One of it's advanced features include text messaging communications. Russia and Europe also have their own systems so they are not dependent on the US, who might turn out the lights at any moment.

China’s BeiDou GNSS Now Available Globally Ahead of Schedule

China has announced the completion of its BeiDou global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and the start of worldwide service on 27 December 2018, marking a victory for Beijing’s “Made in China 2025” strategy that promotes strategically autonomous high technologies such as autonomous driving, satellite technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and 5G networks, among others.

The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, or BDS, was originally expected to start worldwide coverage in 2020 but this has been brought forward.

“This signifies that BDS has officially entered the global era as [it] expands from a regional system to a global navigation system,” Ran Chengqi, director general of the China Satellite Navigation Office, said.

“From now on, no matter where you go, BDS will always be with you,” he added.

With this sooner than expected launch, BDS becomes one of only four global navigation satellite systems, alongside America’s GPS, Russia’s GLONASS, and Europe’s Galileo.

Some critics in the United States are concerned that BDS will allow the Chinese military to deploy and use BeiDou-guided weapons that could target U.S. and allied strategic installations and forces, even if other GNSS systems such as GPS were denied to them.

As well as defence and national security uses, other applications for BDS are being developed for the Chinese economy and private sector. Modern satellite capabilities are critically important for the Made in China 2025 strategy, as Beijing has ambitions that technologies like BDS will become important for national and international economic security, creating a pattern of dependencies, and using BDS and technological developments in AI and 5G networks as the basis for creating international technical standards which in turn are key for establishing global dominance in high-technology sectors.

The Nikkei Asian Review reports that China has shipped 70 million items of ancillary products such as BDS microchips primarily for use on ships and public transportation to 90 countries. Nikkei also reports that China leads the world for satellite navigation patent applications at 54,000.

Products from Chinese smartphone makers such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo, as well as Chinese automobile manufacturers, will be compatible with BDS.

...and kept scientific advancements in the government, like the old NASA, we could be delivering technologies of the future to the Middle East instead of death and destruction and decades of chaos and dislocation. We got nothing to show for 20 years and trillions of dollars of US geopolitical stupidity.

China and Arab states promote BeiDou via Space Silk Road

April 9, 2019

The second China-Arab States BDS Cooperation Forum, held April 1 in Tunis, Tunisia, covered measures and initiatives that will increase the use of China’s Beidou navigation satellite system (BDS) in the Arab world. The aim is to establish a Space Silk Road that elevates cooperation in high-technology between China and the Middle East and North Africa, reports spacewatch global.

The forum concluded that increased BDS use in the Arab world, as well as technological cooperation with China, could be achieved by establishing the Space Silk Road.

By formally establishing a Silk Road conceptual theme, forum participants believe that Arab countries will step up their use of BDS for everything ranging from precision agriculture and maritime domain awareness to disaster management and telecommunications.
