Poor People's Campaign Event

Here's the lowdown for an online event:

Register for "Freedom Church of the Poor," a Moral Leadership Educational featuring Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis (Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival co-chair), and Rev. Claudia de la Cruz (of the New York state coordinating committee).

About:

This online educational event will focus on the fundamental principles of the campaign, addressing itself to questions such as "Why a poor people's campaign?" and "Why a moral revival?". Rev. Theoharis and Rev. de la Cruz will speak about how the campaign today is bringing the vision of the 1968 Poor People's Campaign to life - what Rev. Dr. King called a "nonviolent army" and "freedom church" of the poor - and adapting it for today's reality.

The event will be on Thursday, March 8th, from 8pm - 9:30pm EST (5:00PM PT,) via Zoom video conference, with an option to join by phone. After you register, we will email you with the information about how to join the call.

We're especially encouraging state coordinating committee members to join, but the event is public: feel free to spread the invitation widely.

Forward together!

These comments are from the notes I took of the meeting. The Forty Days of Resistance Campaign will begin on Mother's Day, May 13th, culminating in a Major Mobilization in D.C. The 40 day campaign is the beginning, not the end, of a fusion movement to initiate proactive change for the long haul.

The idea of A Freedom Church of the Poor was mentioned in the context of the proper Biblical response to oppression and coming together for non-violent demonstrations for people's liberation; coming together across all lines and divisions.

A society that dehumanizes poor people dehumanizes all people. The goal is justice and dignity for all.

This will be a transformational movement not a transactional one. It will take more than a protest, program or policy to establish the power and systems of accountability to create genuine change. The only way to accomplish that is to shift the narrative by building the movement from the ground up with individual narratives and utilizing the radical legacy of organizing.

They are finding that people are ready to rise up and demand change.

The International Center For Nonviolent Conflict was mentioned, but a search resulted in a lot of error messages until I noticed I was using Yahoo, switched to Bing and voila!

The Institute For Policy Studies is helping the campaign:
