Politicizing Flint, aka, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.(3)

Finally, here's the material that I originally intended to post before my intro expanded itself into two essays. (See? I, too, can duck responsibility!)

Whereas Michigan politicians refused to take responsibility, even to the point of pleading nolo contendere, rather than guilty, various politicians who promised relief for Flint were eager to out themselves as good great Samaritans.* Because we all know that no Democrat would ever exploit such a tragedy for personal gain, Democrats trod a fine, delicate line after the bad news hit the press in the fall of 2015, well after political primary season was underway.

You, of course, remember that one of the debates between Sanders and Clinton for the 2015-16 primary season was held in Flint, Michigan on March 6, 2016 (the Sunday after Super Tuesday 2016). We now know that the Clinton campaign owned the DNC for all intents and purposes. We also know that the DNC, possibly in the person of Disgusting Debbie Wasserman Schultz and/or Disgraceful Donna Brazile, conferred with CEO Hillary as to her preferred number of debates. Imma assume that HRH HRC may also have had at least a teensy bit of input as to the locales of the debates. too.

IMO, nothing is wrong with bringing positive attention and the business of many visitors to a beleaguered city. And if you do that by holding a Democratic Presidential primary debate there, perhaps it's better than nothing, even if you do exploit the situation But, as I said, far be it from Democrats to attempt to politicize Flint's tragedy for personal gain. And, now, my dears, at last, Let's Go Out to the Movies!

Self-avowed liberal Democrats like Rachel Maddow must be so proud that Trump is the only politician who would stoop so low as to politicize a trip to Flint. And any disgust disappointment you may feel about Maddow's chastising Trump for politicizing his trip to Flint, without mentioning Hillary's bon geste, however, is grievously misplaced.

This one is on us. Totes. Like humorless dullards, we just assumed that Maddow's role at MSNBC/NBC and the world in general was as a political propagandist analyst. However, it's become inescapably obvious, even to us, that she's there and on other networks for comic relief, faithfully serving us the most subtle of sarcasm. Kind of a reverse Colbert Report, only less heavy-handed.

That we've totally missed that lo, these many years, snickering at her, instead of laughing with her, is our bad and only ours. Here's hoping she makes us laugh for years to come before she, too, gets her very own late night hosting chair on network television, perhaps even on NBC's rival, CBS, succeeding Colbert himself. The more you know....

*In fairness, there has been improvement, although I'm not sure who was responsible for it. Indeed, the official word is that the water is safe to drink, but not all Flint residents believe it. Who can blame them?

seems to have been an homage to something from a Chaplin film. I wonder if Vitametavegamin has an earlier counterpart as well.

You're probably right about there being an earlier inspiration for Vitametavegamin. It could be an interesting search. If I find something I'll let you know.

did the bit in vaudeville and the Follies, which got me googling. Turns out, both Skeleton and Ball were in a 1946 film about the Follies. http://golucilleball.blogspot.com/2012/02/ziegfeld-follies-1946.html

Hmmm. I wonder if Skeleton did that bit in that film, or discussed it with cast members during the filming? Also, I think Lucy was old enough to have been in a vaudeville audience or two herself. (Just looked at her wiki a bit and found out that, at a very young age, she dated an older guy that wiki describes as "a hoodlum."
