Pi Day is upon us, and with it, dissent.

Pepperoni Pizza Pi

Some would eschew Pi Day in favor of 6/28. Why so? Because 2 pi. Also because Tau. We'll get there, but I'm staying out of it.
Here's some introductory mundane facts, though number 5 isn't completely boring and is also foreshadowing.

-

-

If you go to You Tube and enter "pi day" into the search bar, you'll retrieve a lot of videos, and most ae neither that informative nor that interesting, or else they are exceedingly long, or silly, like the following:
-

-

There are also a lot of renditions of the pi song aka pi day song, which you can seek out and listen to or not as you see fit. I, however, will jump straight down to the controversy, as it were.
-

So whatever is THIS all about?
-

-

Now, first about Pi.
-

-

And Now, TAU !!
-

-

It's all about Tau (not Tao, but pronounced similarly). But, we lack an apple tau, key lime tau, or American Tau, so we'll end with pi after all:

@arendt
I actually find myself drifting into the Tau camp. If I had to do a lot of that today, I think I would solve in Tau and then back convert.

Have a good one.

She's right...tau....but if I ask for a slice of pie, it'll only be half the size of pi pie, because 2 pi. What happened to the other slice? Wait! is this a neolib plot? Somebody is up to something.

PS. Thanks for the entertaining diversion.

@Snode
math thanks to the wonders of phrases of the form "let x = ....", but I don't think that we need to resort to that here. It seems superficial that if a slice of pie = pi/k, and tau = 2pi, then a slice of tau = 2pi/k, which is twice as big as pi/k. More pie!

Have a great day.

My kids hit “Doodling in Math Class” right when they reached middle school. The one on infinity is not only fun, but I used to be into foundations when I was in grad school and I still learned stuff.

Baking Penrose Tiles is still my favorite, though!

@Hawkfish
the so-called Golden Ratio.

That’s a whole ’nother number and story, though.

We sold Pumpkin Pie for $1.99. Our supplier had extra stock and gave us a good deal. People loved it and no one thought it was strange eating pumpkin pie in March. We even had a sign outside that said "Pi Day at Trader Joes". I dunno, I kinda thought it was cute.
