Open Sesame 10/17/15

So when you become the president, and you start to settle in to the serial-killing portion of the job, apparently you develop a card fetish.

George II famously promoted "most wanted" playing cards depicting people in Iraq that he wanted to be dead. Because that man was a howling imbecile, the deck of the dead also included the trademarked Hoyle joker. Who spent the entirety of the remainder of the George II presidency in hiding, lest he be shot to pieces by some zealous Bushman.

Now there is this Barack Obama person, and his "baseball cards" of people under consideration for a cowardly backshooting drone-snuff. Except, by the time they make it onto the cards, they are no longer considered people.

Within the special operations community, the source said, the internal view of the people being hunted by the U.S. for possible death by drone strike is: "They have no rights. They have no dignity. They have no humanity to themselves. They're just a 'selector' to an analyst. You eventually get to a point in the target's life cycle that you are following them, you don't even refer to them by their actual name." This practice, he said, contributes to "dehumanizing the people before you've even encountered the moral question of 'is this a legitimate kill or not?'"

In this house is a full basement. In that basement I am erecting a Lab. In that Lab I am constructing a Time Machine. Into that Time Machine will go George II and the Kenyan. They will be returned to boyhood, where they can play with cards all they want, but without hurting anybody. George II can hang with his buddies, drinking whiskey, playing strip poker, till they all get into a nice little circle jerk. The Kenyan can sit in his Choom room, blowing gage, dreaming of some day playing second base for the Cubs.

The Time Machine will remain on standby awaiting the next occupant of the Oval Office. Anybody who gets in there who starts in with the serial-killing, into the Machine they will go. The Machine will remain a Necessity, until such time as somebody arrives in office who knows the only real card to play.

I am tempted to put The Hairball into the Machine, and send him back to before time and space. But I worry he would just find a way to brand the name "Trump" all over both.

If you want to be a serial killer, you do not have to be the president, or even a Hairball. You can instead be a Science Man.

This week we learned of the Science Man who found and photographed the only male Moustached Kingfisher seen in the wild in half a century. And then he killed it. Because, you know, that's what Science Men do. At least that's what we normal folk were told. Seems it is common procedure, out there in Science Man world, to Kill something, in order to Learn about it. Which is such horseshit. I learn from animals, minerals, and vegetables all the live-long day, and I manage to do it without killing and cutting them up.

Then there were the Danish zookeepers who killed a couple lions and cut them up in front of schoolchildren. Apparently the killers thought this was Normal. It was once also thought Normal to do that to human beings too—kill them and cut them up, cut them up sometimes while they were still alive, all live, and in public.

The zookeepers claimed they had to snuff the lions because no one would take them. Which is bullshit. Nobody asked me. They could have come and lived here. There's a feed store down the street and I could have loaded up the wheelbarrow there a couple times a day with big slabs of meat and haulted them home for the lions.

The lions could hang with the sparrows, who recently returned from Mexico. They summer there, and then cycle back here for the fall. Except there is not much of a fall here at present. It is like, oh, 350 degrees. The weather tubes are claiming it might rain this weekend, but those tubes are always Lying, and so I don't believe them.

The sparrows, for the lack of fall, they are Blaming me. But this does not prevent them from being welfare recipients demanding big scoops of birdseed every fifteen minutes. I think I am getting some Syndrome in my arm, from this ceaseless scooping. Also, while scooping, I experienced today an intense searing pain behind my left eyeball, which I figured was some sort of aneurysm. But then I ate creole rice and it went away.

At least I am not a hunchback, like these people with the phones. It seems that staring down at the phones all day and all of the night is turning everyone into Quasimodo. It is going to be a sad planet, when the streets the world over are filled with shuffling hunchbacks.

On the bright side, maybe, with all these Quasimodos, it will bring back bell-ringing. When I was a child the Catholic Church down the street rang actual bells, and that was a nice sound. Then these were replaced by taped bells. That is when I first turned to narcotics. My friend and former employer Bill Dalton similarly liked to listen to the Muslim calls to prayer in Indonesia. Then these too were replaced by tapes. There are some 17,000 islands in Indonesia, and Bill hopped on and off almost all of them, seeking relief from the taped prayers. Finally I think he settled on Irian Jaya, where they do not have prayers, at least as they are commonly known. Instead, they eat Rockefellers.

They announced this week the discovery of a dinosaur with a neck spanning half the length of its body; these animals "were basically a bunch of neck vertebrae with a head still attached to them." But they died out, from constantly staring down at their phones.

Here it is rural, so there are no streetlights at the town's main bus stop. But while I awaited a bus there early one morning this week, there were four ghostly little blue lights, shining from the phones up into the immobilized faces gazing down at them. These four young people were completely unaware of their actual physical suroundings. And I suddenly understood why the culture seems now to be so obsessed with zombies. Because that is what people are turning into. Zombie Quasimodos.

Then a couple more young people walked up, and these proved to possess the power of speech. They and the other four began animatedly discussing killing animals. At first I thought they were talking about some app or video game—"you can kill a cat or a squirrel, but not a dog"; "I've killed a dog"; "I've killed some birds." But then, when one youth said, "I killed some birds in Fort Bragg, a lot of them," I knew they were talking about actual, real lives they had taken—and clearly without remorse—while driving.

"What birds live in Fort Bragg?"

"All of them."

"How can you kill a bird? Don't they fly off?"

"If they're too stupid to get out of the way, they deserve to get hit."

Such people, they should always ride the bus.

On a bus trip later in the week I heard several young women strongly denounce men who consume a lot of soda, because it makes their semen taste really foul. This brought new meaning to me to the saga of Monica Lewinsky's blue dress. Bill Clinton, as is well known, loved to guzzle him some sodas. Obviously this gave him rasty semen, and so Lewinsky did not want to taste or swallow it. So instead she sprayed it on her dress. Said dress later delivered by Lewinsky's "friend" Linda Tripp to the Calvinist Clenis-hunters of Kenneth Starr. The rasty-tasting soda-semen staining the blue dress was the only actual physical evidence that Lewinsky and The Clenis had engaged carnally. So, if the man had simply laid off the soda, Lewinsky would have taken him into her mouth, there would have been no evidence, and we all would have been spared that utterly insane impeachment proceeding that caused extraterrestrials to set up a deep and wide "no go" area around all the planet.

I was tempted to widely publicize this Rasty Soda-Semen Revelation, in expectation that, once word was out, male consumption of soda would decline to 0, but I figured the soda Overlords would then come get me, and put me in a Dungeon, and it's simply not worth it.

They are running amok in India because people are eating beef. Some Indians don't believe people should eat meat; others, do. The former are howling for Laws to prevent the latter from munching cow-bits. But since the desired Laws are not yet manifest, a mob of nuts and nimrods recently ran down and killed a Muslim man who, rumor had it, had put meat in his mouth.

People who fly into a frenzy about what other people eat, they should all take a Sedative. Nobody has any more right to tell people how to eat than they do telling them how to fuck. You fuck how you want; I'll eat how I want. I personally would rather go to prison than eat mayonnaise—or even have it in my house. But this does not mean I should go to the supermarket and chase with a chainsaw anyone who strays into the mayonnaise aisle.
funny-pictures-cat-does-not-want-th.jpg
Of course, one is allowed to be a bit more tyrannical when running a restaurant (though even then it is not permissible to actually kill people). Once I was eating at The Columbus in San Francisco when a man a couple booths down foolishly requested "vegetarian lasagne." The proprietor, a volatile Italianwoman, immediately began screaming with rage. She pronounced "vegetarian lasagne" anathema, an insult to God, something only an idiota of an American could conceive or create. She ordered the man and his companions out of her restaurant, and continued to berate them in multiple languages until they were far down the street.

She was a real character, that woman. Sometimes she would override people's orders, deciding she knew better what they should eat. She would listen in on their conversations and then interject advice on how they should conduct their lives. Occasionally people would stand tentatively on the threshhold, asking if the place was open, and she would look them up and down, and then declare she was closed. She had clearly received some vibe that these were people she didn't want to feed. She'd present my young daughter with these special free desserts, and once I asked if I could also have one—which I would of course pay for—and then came the withering look. Which was at least better than the screaming.

The landlord was some clueless moneygrubber who kept raising the rent. We were all informed of this, loudly, as we ate. Finally he kept raising it until she was forced to close the place. The landlord was extremely stupid, because then the space had no "value" at all. He apparently believed it was worth more money than what he'd been getting, but in truth the only "value" in the space was that in it that woman served really good food. When the food was no longer there, neither was the value. It was just an empty hole. Today there's some other business in there, but it's still just an empty hole.

Some years on some shameless Bad People opened a restaurant a couple blocks away and named it after that woman. I ate there once, and then walked down to the police station to file Charges. It has been closed for many years now, but the owners are still awaiting trial in The Hague.

I had never heard of this Lamar Odom person until he needed to go to a brothel and there become unconscious. They wanted to put him on a helicopter, but he was too tall, so instead they bounced him to the hospital overland. It was news to me that the nation's helicopters are unequipped to fly hither and yon long tall basketball players. Couldn't they have just dangled him in some sort of sling? Apparently not. Looked dire there for a while, until after a couple days he regained consciousness, and opened his eyes. But then he saw some Kardashians, and immediately he closed them again.

I only recently became aware of Kardashians. They kept showing up on google news unfiltered. They didn't ever seem to be doing anything, but there they were. I asked around, and learned that the original Kardashian had been an OJ Simpson lawyer. Then a female Kardashian was in a sex tape. But it still made no sense to me. For there were lots of OJ Simpson lawyers, and lots of people have been on sex tapes, but none of those people are in google news every damn day.

Once I became aware of the Kardashians, I started discovering that they are, in some way, connected to, well, just about everything. That Jenner person, for instance, back when he was a man, he was married to a Kardashian. This Odom OD guy, he was enmucked with a Kardashian. Now, they are giving me The Fear. The Kardashians. So every night, before I go to sleep, I first check the closets, and under the beds, to make sure no Kardashians have gotten in. I do not want them here.
asteroid-lutetia-closest-approach-100712-02.jpg
I am also alarmed to discover there is an asteroid known as 12818 Tomhanks. Tom Hanks is almost as bad as a Kardashian. He cannot act, but he is everywhere. I just know that asteroid is going to strike the earth. And cover it in mayonnaise.

Bill was trying to help him understand that socialist means communist to most Americans, and he needs to do something about it - NOW. Maher dug in assertively, “They hear ‘Socialist’, and they think ‘herpes’, Bernie”.

Bernie, imo, came across as rigid and defensive. He didn't hear Bill, and he kept repeating his stump speech. Christ if I hear it again, I'll explode. Looks like I'm not voting for President for the first time in my life.

I live in an area that is left/Green. Greens are losing votes because the two corporate opposition-to-Harper parties have spread a
rumour that we will split the vote if we vote Green. Not where I live, Conservatives are in the minority and always have been on
Vancouver Island. A Green Party rep told me that all three parties in opposition to Harper have agreed beforehand that they will never
form a coalition with Harper's Conservatives in the end game. But of course all politicians lie (except for Green candidates).

The main thing to remember in Canada is the ABC vote, "Anything But Conservatives."

Election is Monday, October 19, wish us luck with ABC!!

Before attempting to shed some light on America’s mental condition, let’s open with a pop quiz question: What is the top-selling prescription drug in the US? Nope, it’s not Viagra, not Prozac, forget the Percocet. If you don't know, take a peek in the medicine cabinet because there’s a high chance it’s lurking in there, right behind that purple people eater. Yes, you got it. The top-selling drug in the Land of the Free and Disturbed is an antipsychotic, happily named Abilify.

Once again: The top-selling drug in America is an antipsychotic. Now some might say that’s mental.

...
Although many prescription medications have worked miracles for millions of people, the “conundrum,” as Robert Whitaker, the author of “Anatomy of an Epidemic,” calls it, is that mental illness in American society is not showing any sign of going away. In fact, it is “skyrocketing.”

“We should expect that the number of disabled mentally ill in the United States, on a per-capita basis, would have declined over the past fifty years… Instead, as the psychopharmacology revolution has unfolded, the number of disabled mentally ill in the United States has skyrocketed.”

Most disturbing for Whitaker is that this “modern-day plague” of mental illness has “now spread to the nation’s children.”

Ukraine will start withdrawing weapons from a clash line in its pro-Russian separatist Donetsk region on Sunday as a truce is holding, military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said.
Ukrainian government troops will pull back mortars with a caliber less than 120 millimeters and cannons with a caliber less than 100 millimeters, Lysenko told reporters on Saturday in Kiev. Separatists would start weapon withdrawal on Oct. 21, Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported on Friday, citing rebel commander Eduard Basurin.
“The ceasefire is holding exemplary along the frontline,” Lysenko said. “As a result no Ukrainian serviceman was killed or wounded.”

people have moved on to Syria. It is generally difficult for US apologists, or Russian apologists, to maintain more than one narrative justifying serial-killing at any one time.

"So long as a man's eyes are open to the light, the act of seeing is involuntary; that is, he cannot then help mechanically seeing whatever objects are before him. Nevertheless, any one's experience will teach him, that though he can take in an indiscriminating sweep of things at one glance, it is quite impossible for him, attentively, and completely, to examine any two things—however large or however small—at one and the same instant of time; never mind if they lie side by side and touch each other. But if you now come to separate these two objects, and surround each by a circle of profound darkness; then, in order to see one of them, in such a manner as to bring your mind to bear on it, the other will be utterly excluded from your contemporary consciousness."

Hawaii Gov. David Ige has declared a state of emergency to deal with the state's homelessness crisis just days after city and state officials cleared one of the nation's largest homeless encampments.

The move will help the state speed up the process of building a homeless shelter for families, and the state is considering four possible sites, Ige said at a news conference Friday.

"We are making sure that we have options for those who are homeless to move into an emergency shelter, and the biggest deficit in the system is shelter space for families," Ige said. "So the emergency proclamation would allow us to stand up shelters for families in an expeditious manner."

Hawaii saw a 23 percent increase in its unsheltered homeless population between 2014 and 2015, and a 46 percent increase in the number of unsheltered families, said Scott Morishige, state homelessness coordinator.

There were 7,260 homeless people in Hawaii at the latest count, meaning Hawaii has the highest rate of homelessness per capita of any state in the nation.

I would think the solution would be to control rental prices. I think yesterday there were results posted from a report of the alliance for a just society containing a table with livable wages for each state of the US. It listed Hawaii with a livable wage of $21.44 for a single adult. This is around the same in Washington DC with $ 21.86 and California a bit lower at $19.39.

On Maui the rental prices for a studio or one bedroom (often ohanas resembling wood shacks or just one room with shared bath and kitchen of a single house) is between $ 900.00 to $1300.00 and up. (In Honolulu you can't find rentals under $ 1,300.00 That doesn't include electricity and or wi-fi, both essential for anybody these days to have to function in daily life. Electricity and gasoline is at least one and a half compared to mainland prices.

You can be call yourself very lucky to find a full-time job at an hourly wage higher than $14.00. People who have those jobs have a lot of difficulties to get a rental contract. Most of these jobs are vulnerable to having hours cut easily, your are fired easily if contracts of your employer don't go through. This is a constant struggle to find a living space and feel secure. No job and you are out and sleep in your car or a tent, which is not allowed. You get fined. There are large groups of immigrants from the Phillipines and Argentina that work at low wages. Few Americans can compete against those, because at that level of wages, most American born people lose their minds and get stoned instead of ready to work hard.

Mostly rich investors from California and Oregon and Washington buy the land, build mansions and drive up all prices, rentals, houses and land. You feel that the middle class is disappearing, stores closed down since 2008-9, everyone tries to work odd jobs and most people rent out any little room they have in their houses, to secure their income that allows them to pay their mortgages. It's almost obscene to watch how land got bought up and then misused to build high priced houses on it, which then get rented out at unaffordable prices. There are very few low-rent buildings.

Hawaii has a lot of Veterans. Many come to Hawaii because they want to be in a warm climate in which a homeless person doesn't freeze. There are a lot of drug and alcoholic addicts among those. People want them off the streets, parks and beaches.

The solution to the problem would be, imo, to enforce rental prices that are controlled. People need to be able to rent a studio, if they work full-time and sleep safely in their own four walls.

You can make it on Maui with $18.00 per hour, you can't make it with $ 16.00 doing it all by yourself. I am even glad to say that they consider only an hourly rate of 21.44 dollars a truely livable wage. Very few homeless people find jobs in that range. They would have to work two or three jobs and/or share a rental with another adult employed person. Not encouraging at all.

That's all pretty disheartening. I know your son lives there and may struggle with all that. A similar scenario exists in NZ as well; the buying up of properties by the international wealthy, leaving most NZers scrambling (sometimes homeless) to live. I agree with you, that more rent control would be reasonable ...

In 1920, New York adopted Emergency Rent Laws, which effectively charged the courts of New York State with their administration. When challenged by tenants, rent increases were reviewed by a standard of "reasonableness." The definition of reasonableness was subject to judicial interpretation. Certain apartments were decontrolled beginning in 1926, and the Rent Laws of 1920 expired completely in June 1929, though limited protections against unjust evictions were continued.

both rental market and job market and the housing market. But I guess that's pretty much everywhere these days. Hawaii is just a place many people have illusions about. "It takes you in and spits you out" is a saying I heard about it, unless you are very rich. Then you buy it and take the land away and do with the Islands what you want. Billionaires. May be Bernie should go there and teach them some "socialist morals".... Smile

Thanks for asking, my son struggles, but so far he is managing it.

Wouldn't that be cool

A distant star observed through NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope features a strange diming pattern that a university researcher says might indicate the presence of alien “megastructures.”

Jason Wright, a Pennsylvania State University researcher who looks for Earth-like planets with conditions favorable to life, is set to publish a paper with his theory that the pattern is consistent with a “swarm of megastructures” that are perhaps solar panels designed to capture the star’s energy, he told The Atlantic on Tuesday.

The star is surrounded by a cluster of debris that’s common among young stars, but not among mature ones like KIC 8462852, said Tabetha Boyajian, a post-doctorate researcher at Yale University who examined the star in detail before sharing her findings with Wright.

The star is located about 1,500 light-years away from Earth, between the Cygnus and Lyre constellations in the Milky Way galaxy. That means that the dimming observed by the telescope was caused by objects that existed around the star in the 6th century CE.

“We’d never seen anything like this star,” Boyajian told The Atlantic. “It was really weird. We thought it might be a bad data … but everything checked out.”

Now that commodity prices are falling, countries that rely on commodities -- Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia -- just don't have the cash they once did to invest in safe assets like U.S. Treasury bonds.
"Slow growth means that they just don't have the same appetite for dollars because they don't have cash to put to work," says Lori Heinel, chief portfolio strategist at State Street Global Advisors. "The bigger issue is 'do they have the dollars flowing into the economies to keep investing in Treasuries?'"
These countries are also under pressure provide support to their slowing economies.
Their currencies are losing value against the dollar. And some countries, like China, have stepped in to buy their local currencies to keep their values from sinking too low. China has also spent cash to support its stock market.

A lot like the GOS

A half-century ago, student activists at the University of California clashed with administrators during the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, a series of events that would greatly expand free-speech rights of people at public colleges and universities.

Today, activists at UCLA are demanding that administrators punish some of their fellow students for expressive behavior that is clearly protected by the First Amendment.
...
What did UCLA students find so outrageous as to warrant the violation of the fundamental right to free expression? A “Kanye Western” theme party where students wore costumes that parodied rap superstar Kanye West and his celebrity wife, Kim Kardashian. For this, UC student activists would squander their inheritance.

Perhaps 18-to-22-year-olds can be forgiven for failing to appreciate what’s at stake in their activism. But UCLA administrators cannot be forgiven for complying with student demands to punish this free expression—a glaring illustration of their low-regard for the First Amendment, California law, and liberal ideals.
...
Others who objected to the theme party deemed it an example of cultural appropriation, a “microaggression” against black students, or deeply insensitive and hurtful.

“The sagging or baggy jeans that students wore to the party represent one of the most notorious African American stereotypes in fashion,” UCLA student Caleb Jackson wrote in The Daily Bruin. “So notorious in fact, that it has led several cities across the country to make sagging illegal. The racial undertones associated with this clothing style make its cultural appropriation highly offensive to Black students.”

Meanwhile, critics of the critics insist that West is a famous celebrity, not a stand-in for black culture; that stuffed butts were a reference to Kim Kardashian, who is white and of Armenian descent, not black; that there is nothing wrong with appropriating the dress of hip-hop culture, which is not the same as black culture; that it’s myopic for privileged student activists to focus on a frat theme party while living in a city plagued by police killings, homelessness, housing discrimination, and other injustices; that activists are giving Greek organizations too much power to set their agenda; and that college kids these days are oversensitive to the point of self-parody.

What’s unhealthy is the movement to suppress free speech at UCLA.

University administrators bear the most culpability. After hearing objections to the theme party, but before finishing an investigation into it, UCLA officials suspended the social activities of the fraternity and sorority, effectively punishing them without due process even as these same officials publicly acknowledged that they didn’t have all the facts. Moreover, university officials are abusing their authority merely by investigating protected speech in the first place. And the student newspaper is cheering them on, demanding in an editorial that the office of UCLA Fraternity and Sorority Relations take a more active role in preemptively clearing all party themes.

A big thumbs up to you! Good

We actually had a Peace vigil today and I am so happy just to be with the guys again. There were lots of tourists and people on the streets in downtown today. No one was negative and that is good. But we really did not have any conversations either. We got a lot of thumbs up and thank you's. But I want more. I want people to really be engaged.

My issue now is where are the Peace activists? We three are ages 80, 85, and 68 respectively. And I am the youngster in this bunch. We even talked about how there is no longer an anti-war movement in this country. War is the most overt symptom of the oligarchy and of empire.

This group was self organized about thirteen years ago and had thirty five members back then. Once Obama got elected, the numbers have dropped over the years, mostly due to age and health. I think young people are afraid to do this for fear it will affect their employability. In fact, one time two young college age guys stopped to talk to us and were very supportive. They were British. Americans seem to be very afraid.

down there has a college in it, which brings in new people each semester. That helps. Is there no college there? And will North Carolina businesses really not hire people if they stand on a corner and suggest maybe peace would be nice? Jeez. I was going to suggest you might also consider recruiting people from the dope dens, but a quick tubes search reveals your state is kinda dragging its feet on the medical-marijuana front. ; / I guess my final suggestion would be bluegrass. Get some bluegrassers to come stand down there with you and play, setting out the hat for some coin. You could combine peace and music. And maybe some of those who stray over to hear the tunes, will later return to stand for peace.

I knew a woman who was really taken with Audobon's Birds of America. I found her a really nice vintage copy at a library book sale. Several years later I made the mistake of mentioning that Audobon shot those birds, before drawing them. After that, she could never really look at it again.

I experienced for a time a sorta similar problem with libraries, when I read the apt observation, I think by Philip Whalen, that the money Andrew Carnegie showered on his 2509 libraries was money that he should have paid to his steelworkers.

Bernie Blew It: He Sold Out Instead of Confronting Clinton.

When is the next debate? I wonder, if Sanders will change and fight a bit harder against Clinton.

getting kinda cranky, in his old age. ; )

I have no particular insight into the Sanders campaign, and really haven't paid much attention to it. I do know that it is not uncommon, in intra-party contests, for candidates, particularly early on, which is where we still are, to refrain from pouring boiling oil on one another. The thought is that eventually you are going to prevail, and will then want to poach the other candidate(s)' supporters. And it is hard to do that if you have previously publicly set those candidates on fire.

Generally the full-on assaults come towards the end, and then from candidates who are clearly Doomed, as when Clinton II eight years ago said she was remaining in the race, even though she had no chance, because maybe Obama would get shot in the head, like RFK.

This presidential contest has thus far been dominated by The Hairball, who is like a giant id, ceaselessly spewing pus about any person, place, or thing that he perceives to be insufficiently worshipping His Hairballness. It is hard to remember, in the current Hairball-clogged climate, but that sort of campaigning is the exception, not the rule.

since, to some extent, he often appears to be part of the Dem Party 'Veal Pen.'

But, 'to give credit where credit is due,' I agree with him on the FSC email debacle.

Now, I sorta understand "why" the CNN Dem Party Debate moderators threw so many softballs to the Candidates, and didn't bother to consistently follow up on questions/answers. Please see the donor chart below.

If I'm not mistaken, CNN is owned by Time-Warner.
