This looks like a lynching

1024x1024.jpg

A Black man who had run naked through the streets of a western New York city died of asphyxiation after a group of police officers put a hood over his head, then pressed his face into the pavement for two minutes, according to video and records released Wednesday by the man's family.

Daniel Prude died March 30 after he was taken off life support, seven days after the encounter with police in Rochester. His death received no public attention until Wednesday, when his family held a news conference and released police body camera video and written reports they obtained through a public records request.

“I placed a phone call for my brother to get help. Not for my brother to get lynched,” Prude’s brother, Joe Prude, said at a news conference. “How did you see him and not directly say, The man is defenseless, buck naked on the ground. He’s cuffed up already. Come on.’ How many more brothers gotta die for society to understand that this needs to stop?"

The videos show Prude, who had taken off his clothes, complying when police ask him to get on the ground and put his hands behind his back. Prude is agitated and shouting as he sits on the pavement in handcuffs for a few moments as a light snow falls. “Give me your gun, I need it,” he shouts.

Then the officers slam Prude's head into the street. One officer, who is white, holds his head down against the pavement with both hands, saying “calm down” and “stop spitting.” Another officer places a knee on his back.

“Trying to kill me!” Prude says, his voice becoming muffled and anguished under the hood.

“OK, stop. I need it. I need it,” the prone man begs before his shouts turn to whimpers and grunts.

The new "I was afraid for my life" excuse to kill people.

One officer wrote that they put the hood on Prude because he was spitting continuously in the direction of officers and they were concerned about coronavirus.

A medical examiner concluded that Prude's death was a homicide caused by “complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint.” The report lists excited delirium and acute intoxication by phencyclidine, or PCP, as contributing factors.

Activists demanded that officers involved be prosecuted on murder charges and that they be removed from the department while the investigation proceeds.

“The police have shown us over and over again that they are not equipped to handle individuals with mental health concerns. These officers are trained to kill, and not to deescalate. These officers are trained to ridicule, instead of supporting Mr. Daniel Prude,” Ashley Gantt of Free the People ROC said at the news conference with Prude's family.

Meanwhile Barr says that he doesn't see that there is a problem in this country because cops are killing black people. I'd like him to review the video of cops killing a man in a mental health crisis by suffocating him to death. Again. Since George Floyd's death by torture I have seen cops continuing to put pressure on people's necks while they are in handcuffs after many states have said that they can not do this anymore. If the cops could not tell that Daniel Prude was in a mental health crisis then they need more training. Families that call cops when they need help managing crises shouldn't be left with the guilt that they have when their loved ones end up killed by cops.

I am appalled and saddened that this keeps happening. It sure doesn't happen when white men kill numerous people like Dylan Roof and the Colorado movie shooter who were both arrested peacefully. I watched a recent video where a white man was pointing a gun at another white man and the cop ran up to him and told him to get on the ground. I could imagine if the guy with the gun was black. Remember John Crawford who was looking at a toy rifle in Walmart when a cop shot him the minute he saw him. It was a fucking TOY GUN. Tamir Rice was killed withing 2 seconds after the cop got out of the car when he was playing with a toy gun in a state with open carry laws. Tell me that if Tamir had been white he too would have been shot and killed within 2 seconds.

Read the article for the full scoop of what happened to another black man in this country just because of the color of his skin.

Both videos cued to just before they were shot. Tamir was sitting by himself and did not at all look threatening to anyone. He walked to the cop car and was killed. Neither Tamir or John had the chance to 'drop the gun' before they were killed. As far as I know neither cop was charged.

Biden wants to look forward and so he's going to Kenosha to meet with the Jacob family. He's going to be a positive influence and yada yada yada Biden style.

No, rereading, that's another case. "a white man was pointing a gun at another white man and the cop ran up to him and told him to get on the ground."

Think of how terrifying it is to suffocate.

"You can't enjoy your civil liberties if you're in a coffin."

Fear for your life/your family! is a complete and utter carte blanche, isn't it? The "woke progressives" have embraced it too ("Right to free speech does not trump right to exist!" - as if that doesn't sound like the abortion debate all over again). It's a one-way ticket to totalitarianism.

One thing that's telling about the above quote, of course, is the word "enjoy". They make it sound like freedom is a decadent luxury. It's not. You cannot have science, reason, or truth (and hence you cannot have JUSTICE) without freedom. It's a necessity for true functionality.

EDIT: Why was he naked??? Would this story have been funny if it'd ended differently?

He was in a mental health crisis as the article states. Would it have ended differently if he wasn't? Doubt it because he was still a black person having mental issues. Cops just killed another black man who was also having issues. He was holding a bat and was shot within moments after the cop confronted him. I'd love to see the stats on how many white people who are in mental health crisis are shot dead or taken to a hospital.

The Liberal Moonbat's picture

@snoopydawg I'm not black, but I AM mentally ill (do I need to wear that like a badge now so I don't get judged for my color??? It will go nicely right next to my little yellow star-patch).

I once had a major mental breakdown when I was taking a long, solo road-trip. I wound up in some mid-size town in Colorado, broke down, called the local 911, and first cops (but later an ambulance) showed up. They were very nice to me and took me to the hospital (in Albuquerque, NM, by contrast, the police, most whom are Hispanic, are much worse, with a special zeal for killing the mentally ill and homeless; even the paramedics are jerks). I certainly wasn't naked, was in a weapon-free car, and had begun the encounter by making a phone call. I could easily see things going differently if we hadn't been "properly introduced" or if my breakdown had taken some more alien form. There are A LOT of variables here, not just color. What if it's not "racism"? What if (as would make perfect sense to me) they're just simpletons with a very limited menu of understanding, and if a person's behavior doesn't conform to a teeny-tiny menu of stereotypes? More things in heaven and earth, Horatio - and we've come under the thrall of an INCREDIBLY limited philosophy (AKA "critical race theory", in which plan-and-simple weirdness is simultaneously denied to exist AND criminalized). Interestingly, my final encounter of that evening was not friendly at all; after everyone in the hospital being nice to me, the security guard at the exit treated me like COMPLETE SHIT, initially demanding I stand out in the dangerously-cold weather to wait for my cab (although he eventually let me sit inside, so long as it was right next to the exit and he ordered me not to move from the spot) - tellingly, the moment some of his co-workers (Hispanic nurses and/or janitors, but not security guards) showed up, he was a complete ray of sunshine to them; total personality change right in front of me.

We've been sold a coherent, very limited, jarringly at-odds-with-what-went-before, mind-shrinking package these last few years, and I smell bullshit. What if this all isn't "light-skin VS dark-skin"? What if it's "conformist vs weird"?

It would be nice to see the stats, but in this case where they lynched Prude I think it had more to do with the color of his skin. Just my opinion, but there it is. I have seen too many videos of how cops interact with blacks as opposed to how they do with whites.

Regardless of skin color cops should be color blind, but I don't think they are. Not when you look at what happened with Dylan Roof after he killed 9 blacks at a church. Or the Colorado movie theater shooter after he killed 12 or more.

A white guy was pointing a gun at another white guy at a protest. The cops didn't shoot him which was good, but I wonder what the result would have been if he was black? Think if Tamir had been a white kid in an wealthy white neighborhood the cop would have shot him within 2 secs of getting out of his car? I don't.

You seem to want to deny that racism is a problem in this country when it comes to cops. IF that isn't true then I am not understanding your comments on the issue. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

The Liberal Moonbat's picture

@snoopydawg There is a serious danger of us all snatching defeat from the jaws of victory when it comes to decades of change when it comes to race - there's a moral panic in the air ruining everything that hasn't already been ruined, and specifically hunting down and deleting progress, so that the racist LCD Is all there is and can be. We can't solve racism by becoming racist - "race" doesn't exist. This is, itself a mental health issue. "Race" - and hence, "racism" - is a delusion. If a "crazy person" thinks his neighbor's dog is giving him orders to murder children, does that mean we should all believe in talking dogs, or even that we should ban dogs??? NO. A delusion's a delusion, no matter how many people have it. The first step is to stop believing in it, or to keep on being healthy if you never had that delusion to begin with.

It should go without saying that that does NOT mean you deny that things like what happened in this video happen. There's the question of "what happened", and then there's the question of "why"? The "what" is self-evident; I'm saying we've become completely derailed as to the "why" - and in the process, the better world we believed in is being strangled in its cradle. It existed. It still exists - but now it's supreme heresy to say so. We're being forcibly, and needlessly, devolved. It's "crab-pot culture" on an imperial scale - and the fact that we all have to think and speak the same way now is the dead-fucking-opposite of "inclusivity and diversity". The "anti-racists" are doing more to resurrect racism and destroy the 20th Century than the Charleston Tiki-Torch-set could ever dream to.

It's possible you got confused because I'm expanding the topic a little because of important related things that have also been preying on my mind - I can do that, right? Some people I talk to get offended when they feel like I'm not letting them bring up whatever they want to bring up, then I turn around and run into people who get just as offended if I deviate from what they want to talk about. The way everyone else behaves - insistent on a certain set of standards while other people I spend just as much time with insist on the opposite, both get really mad and judgmental when the standards are broken, neither seems to be aware the other exists - makes me feel like I'm in that episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where Worf gets shunted to a parallel universe whenever he passes near Geordi's VISOR, and of course only he notices.

Cops dealing with people in distress needs to be addressed big time. And stop sending them to Israel to be trained by its military. I think someone commented on whose great idea that was, but I don't remember why they are.

My neighbor was a vietnam vet who drank a lot. One night he fell and gashed his head open and came to me for help. I called for an ambulance and they sent the sheriffs there first because he was drunk. We couldn't understand why the paramedics sat there for 10 minutes watching us.

Then after the ambulance left the sheriff assholes kept saying derogatory things about him and were yukking it up. I went up to them and gave them a piece of my mind. No matter what they think of someone's condition they should have stayed professional. I followed it up with a call to the sheriff himself and finally got an apology from them. Me tho, not my friend.

People who sign up to 'help' should not sit in judgement of those they are helping. But families who are working multiple jobs may not know how many people in distress are killed by cops and don't know where else to turn.

Until the Supremes overturn qualified immunity this will continue to happen. Congress cannot overturn it because it came from the court. At least according to an article I read.

Hopefully the case I linked down thread will go somewhere. John Crawford's murders should have been charged as should have Tamir's.

I do not know that it would take the Supreme Court to do so, but qualified immunity must be done away with. What we are watching on a daily basis are police acting like gangs. They have all the ear marks of gang behavior including special tatoos and initiation rites.

As a human being who believes that all human beings should be treated as innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, I am fed up with police acting as judge, jury and executioner, particularly of people of color. From what we are witnessing on a nearly daily basis is a group of thugs, many of whom are either Klan or support the Klan and other right wing groups who have been given a license to kill with impunity. This has got to STOP!

Police departments have hired and supported the worst people as cops for several decades now. They are violent and incompetent. They are not a bad apple minority but a good percentage of every police department. City and states can pass laws against no knock warrants but does not matter. There as simply too many incompetent and violent cops.

'Seven police officers suspended after video shows hood placed on head of Black man who later died', 14 hrs ago via Msn.com

On Thursday, amid mounting questions about why it took five months for the circumstances of Daniel T. Prude’s death to become public, the graphic video with Prude’s last words went viral, once again forcing Americans to ask whether tactics used by police are too extreme. With protests and outrage building here and nationwide, the city’s mayor apologized Thursday and rebuked the city’s police chief, who she claimed did not disclose to her the circumstances of the death of Prude, who officials said was having a mental breakdown at the time of his arrest.

Warren said she was told by Police Chief La’Ron Singletary that Prude had an apparent drug overdose while in custody. Warren said that she was not told that officers had restrained Prude, and that she was made fully aware of what happened in August by the city’s corporation counsel after a Prude family attorney filed an open records request. Warren said she is suspending the officers, who were not named, against the advice of the city attorney.

“Experiencing and ultimately dying from, a drug overdose while in police custody, as I was told by the chief, is entirely different than what I ultimately witnessed on the video,” Warren said in a statement. “I have addressed with Police Chief LaRon Singletary how deeply disappointed I am in him personally and professionally for failing to fully and accurately inform me about what occurred to Mr. Prude.”
......................................
Rochester police Wednesday denied any allegations of a coverup. According to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity, New York Attorney General Letitia James has been looking into Prude’s death since April.

In a statement Thursday, James vowed a “swift but thorough investigation.” She also said her office’s investigation did not prevent Rochester police from conducting their own probe of the matter.

but it shouldn't take a video to come out months later for people to see what actually happened. Any death by cop should be reviewed by some agency not connected to the police. Period. THis would be one of the best reforms. An outside neutral agency should review all videos and if they turn theirs off every person involved should have to take a lie detector to see if they're telling the truth.

Gee and it's a wonder that cartoons like this are coming out. This reminds me a bit of the Charlie Hebo, Hebro (?) Muslim cartoon incident. Cops are outraged over it.

How Can Supreme Court Decisions Be Overturned
How can US Supreme Court decisions be overturned?

There are three major ways in which a Supreme Court decision can be overturned.

If the decision is based on a law that Congress has passed, Congress can simply change the law. The Court sometimes has to rule on how they think laws made by Congress apply to certain cases. If Congress thinks the Court has gotten it wrong, they can change the law to make things clearer.

If the decision is based on the Constitution, the Constitution can be amended. For example, the Supreme Court has said that the Constitution bans school-sponsored prayer. If enough people wanted to, they could pass an amendment allowing such prayers.

Finally (and this is the most common way of overturning Court decisions) a later Supreme Court can decide that a certain decision was wrong. For example, the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education effectively overruled the decision in made 58 years before in Plessy v. Ferguson.
